Fantasy Faire prepares for March 12 opening at Disneyland

Disneyland's newest project, the Fantasy Faire, was completed last week, and the media, including MousePlanet, got an early preview, as did eager annual passholders. The 15,000 square-foot expansion of Fantasyland, which rests over the former Carnation Plaza Gardens location, will official open to guests tomorrow, Tuesday, March 12.

Fantasy Faire contains four venues:

  • The Royal Hall – an dedicated princess meet-and-greet area
  • The Royal Theatre – with live storytelling sessions featuring Belle and Rapunzel
  • Fairytale Treasures – a new shop
  • Maurice's Treats – a food cart named in honor of Belle's inventor father

Each of these areas are connected by the Village Square, which also contains a few hidden treasures.

Guests who walk into Fantasy Faire over the newly widened bridge will be immediately met by a scaled-down Tangled Tower. This centerpiece of Fantasy Faire contains a hidden feature that comes alive with a familiar tune and lighting effect in the evenings.

Guests with a keen eye may spot a familiar cat on a windowledge. An animaronic figure of Figaro (Geppetto's cat) naps on a window sill above the Royal Hall, next to a caged bird. The bird's call occasionally wakes Figaro, and the cat responds by opening his eyes, moving his head, and batting a paw towards the bird before falling back asleep.

Guests who continue to search the Village Square of Fantasy Faire may find Clopin's Music Box, an "interactive mechanical toy representing the Feast of Fools from The Huntchback of Notre Dame." When you turn a small crank, the interactive music box comes alive with a music-box style tune and mechanical animations.

The Royal Hall, a dedicated princess meet-and-greet, is located towards the rear of Fantasy Faire. A large permanent and partially covered queue leads guests into the Royal Hall where they will have the opportunity to meet with three princesses. Guests who are looking to meet with a specific Disney princess should check the wait time sign outside of the Royal Hall entrance for a list of the three currently inside.

The Royal Theatre, housed in the former Carnation Plaza Gardens bandstand, is where guests can find two new and very unique shows. Village thespians Mr. Smythe and Mr. Jones help to retell the stories of Beauty and the Beast and Tangled in a humorous way. The performances are accompanied by a live piano player, Sir Samuel of Morocco, as well as appearances by Belle, Rapunzel, and Flynn Rider. Following each of the performances, the characters who appeared, either Belle or Rapunzel and Flynn Ryder, make special appearances near the stage. This is a good opportunity to meet with these charters in what could be much shorter lines than their respective meet-and-greets.

There are four ways to enter and exit Fantasy Faire: Two bridges from Main Street U.S.A., the walking path from Fronteirland, and the tunnel near the Rancho Del Zocalo restaurant in Frontierland. There are no restrooms in Fantasy Faire; the closest are located near the Rancho Del Zocalo restaurant, which you access through the tunnel towards the rear of the Fantasy Faire.

The main entrance bridge, located closest to Sleeping Beauty Castle and the Royal Hall, may be used for queue overflow. When this happens, you cannot access the Fantasy Faire from this bridge; use one of the other three access points.

For more details and photographs, see our coverage from the March 6 media perview at "Photo Tour of Disneyland's new Fantasy Faire."

Upcoming Fantasy Faire "Making of" presentation and panel discussion

Annual passholders can get a special peek behind the development and creation of Disneyland's Fantasy Faire. A panel discussion featuring Walt Disney Imagineering's show director Christopher Utley and creative director Michel den Dulk and and question-and-answer session happens at 6:00 p.m. this Thursday, March 14, in the Main Street Opera House.

You must show your valid annual passport to register for the event beginning at 11:30 a.m. in front of the Main Street Opera House; you will be issued a wristband for entry into the event.

The Main Street Opera House opens for the Fantasy Faire presentation and panel discussion at 5:45 p.m., and late arrivals are not admitted to the event. As with the recent annual passholder movie previews, seating is limited and can fill up quickly, especially for an event of this nature. If you plan to attend, we strongly recommend that you arrive at the park as early as possible to register.

Disneyland Resort honored for protecting the environment

It is easy to take the simplest things for granted, such as having access to soap. So many in other countries are not so lucky, but the Disneyland Resort and the cast members in the Disneyland hotels' housekeeping staff are helping to change that. This past week, the Disneyland Resort was honored by the nonprofit organization, Clean the World Foundation Inc., for its environmental efforts in recycling partially used soap. The housekeeping cast members of the Disneyland hotels collected nearly 20,000 pounds of soap bars and 9,500 pounds of bottled bath amenities from the 2,404 Disney-owned hotel rooms last year. The soap and other bottled bath amenities were donated to the Clean the World Foundation, which then sanitizes, repackages, and distributes the products worldwide.

The combined efforts of the Disneyland Resort cast members and the Clean the World Foundation were recycled into 53,392 bars of soap.

"We are pleased to recognize the Disneyland Resort for their continued support," said Shawn Seipler, CEO and co-founder of Clean the World, during a ceremony recognizing Disney's efforts. "The fact that every hotel at the Disneyland Resort is among our top participates speaks to their commitment to join the global hygiene revolution and inspire positive change in the world."

Pilar Hamil, general manager of the Disneyland Hotel, thanked the efforts of the hotel cast members. "The passionate voluntary support of our housekeeping cast members is what makes this program successful at the Disneyland resort. They have brought this program to life at our hotels and thousands of lives have already been changed because of them."

This and that...

… The Los Angeles Times reports that a Hollywood resident was arrested for allegedly selling fake Disneyland tickets online. This type of scam occurs quite often and serves as a good reminder that you should only purchase Disneyland tickets from Disney or an authorized travel agency. Avoid purchasing "discounted" Disneyland tickets from sites such as Craigslist or eBay, as most victims are only made aware of the scam when they attempt to use them at Disneyland, long after they have already paid for the tickets.

… Also in the news this past week, a Santa Ana man pleaded guilty to trademark infringement when he illegally imported counterfeit Disney pins from China so that he could sell them over the Internet.

… Disney VoluntEARS, along with Walt Disney Imagineering, the City of Anaheim, the YMCA and KaBOOM! (a non-profit dedicated to saving children's play time) teamed up to fully assemble an Anaheim city park playground in less than eight hours. The new playground at Schweitzer Park is located approximately six miles west of the Disneyland Resort and is expected to provide more than 2,000 children in Anaheim with a safe place to play.

“For more than 60 years, Walt Disney Imagineering has been dreaming up and creating magical places for families to come and play together,” said Craig Russell, Chief Design and Delivery Executive for Walt Disney Imagineering. “We are excited to participate in this KaBOOM playground build along with our colleagues from the Disneyland Resort and our community partners to help create even more places for families to have fun.”

Disney California Adventure

  • Muppet Vision 3D – currently on hiatus. The theater is being used to show a 4D preview of OZ The Great and Powerful though March 31, 2013

Resort Events

Check here to see if a large convention, competition or park event might fall during your next trip to the Disneyland Resort. If you know of any in-park events, official or unofficial, that should be listed here, please send us an e-mail (link).

2013
  • Grad Nite events – This party for high school seniors graduating in 2013 will be held on 22 dates in 2013: May 9, 10, 11, 15, 16, 17, 18, 22, 23, 24, 29, 30, 31; June 5, 6, 7, 12, 13, 14, 19, 20, 21. The 2013 event includes admission to Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure Park during regular operating hours, and a private party in Disneyland Park after the park closes to the public for the night.
  • MousePlanet's own MouseAdventure – Sunday, May 19. Registration opens Tuesday, March 19. We always sell out fast, so be sure to sign up for the MouseAdventure Newsletter, follow @mouseadventure on Twitter, or visit our official Facebook page.
  • D23 Expo – August 9–11. Tickets for the three-day convention are now on sale.
  • Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend – August 30 through September 1 at the Disneyland Resort. Registration for the 10K and Half Marathon are both sold out, although spaces may still available through charity teams and select travel agencies.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

Current Discounts & Promotions

Disneyland prices as of May 20, 2012.

Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.

One Day, One Park Ticket – Regularly $87/$81 One Day Park Hopper – Regularly $125/$119 No discounts currently available to the general public. Check with your employer, school or credit union to see if any discounts are available through them.
Two Day, One Park per Day Ticket – Regularly $170/$158 Two Day Park Hopper – Regularly $200/$188 Get Away Today Vacations – MousePlanet sponsor Get Away Today Vacations sells two-day tickets at a slight discount over the Disneyland main gate price. 2-day Park Hoppers are $197 for adults ($185 for children); 2-day 1/park/day tickets are $168 for adults ($156 for children). Check with your employer, school or credit union to see if any discounts are available through them.
Three Day, One Park per Day Ticket – Regularly $220/$205 Three Day Park Hopper – Regularly $250/$235

Get Away Today Vacations – MousePlanet sponsor Get Away Today Vacations sells three-day tickets at a slight discount over the Disneyland main gate price. 3-day Park Hoppers are $245 for adults ($230 for children); 3-day 1/park/day tickets are $217 for adults ($202 for children).

2012-2013 Disney Military Promotional 3–Day Park Hopper Ticket ($125) – a discounted price offered to Eligible Service Members or their spouses.

Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets may be purchased through September 26, 2013, and are valid through September 28, 2013. Disney defines "Eligible Service Members" as active or retired members of the U.S. military, including the National Guard, Reservists, and the U.S. Coast Guard. Valid military identification will be required for purchase. This discount is available at MWR/ITT offices at your military base or other at participating U.S. military sales outlets. The tickets are not available for sale at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. The price is the same for adults and children, and total of six tickets may be purchased per military member, regardless of who purchases the tickets (the member or their spouse).

Tickets are blocked out through January 2; February 15–17; March 25 to April 5; and July 4. As far as we can tell, there is no "fuse" on this ticket, so you may have more than the standard 13 days from first use to use the remaining two admissions, but we highly recommend you contact your base MWR/ITT office for more details before making travel plans. Please note that this ticket is not a "bonus" ticket, and so does not include an early admission day.

Check with your employer, school or credit union to see if other discounts are available through them.

Four Day, One Park per Day Ticket – Regularly $245/$225 Four Day Park Hopper – Regularly $275/$255

Note: We are hearing that the Costco 4-Day Park Hopper is sold of various locations. Check your local Costco for availability.

Costco 4-Day Park Hopper Ticket plus $50 Costco Cash card ($259.99) – the Fall 2012 version of this discount offer is a bit different than past deals, with several important changes:

  • Unlike past offers, this ticket has a 13-day "fuse," which means you must use all four admission days within 13 days of first use, or lose them.
  • This ticket is not restricted to Southern California residents, however, the ticket is not currently available through Costco.com, and we're not sure if stores outside of Southern California will carry it. If you live in Northern California or out of state and spot them, be sure to let us know so we can pass this information along to other readers.
  • This ticket includes one Magic Morning day.
  • There are no blockout dates this time.
  • The ticket comes with a $50 Costco Cash Card instead of the Disney Gift Card offered last year.

At face value, the ticket is only $15 less than the rack rate for a Disneyland Resort 4-Day Parkhopper ticket purchased at the Main Entrance booths, and is more expensive than the child's ticket. The real "savings" comes in the form of the $50 Costco Cash Card. If you were already in the market for a 4-day Parkhopper and plan to spend $50 at Costco, this deal will save you $65.00, but it may not be a real value if you aren't an avid Costco shopper.

Get Away Today Vacations – MousePlanet sponsor Get Away Today Vacations sells four-day tickets at a slight discount over the Disneyland main gate price. 4-day Park Hoppers are $270 for adults ($250 for children); 4-day 1/park/day tickets are $240 for adults ($220 for children).

Check with your employer, school or credit union to see if any discounts are available through them.

Five Day, One Park per Day Ticket – Regularly $260/$240 Five Day Park Hopper – Regularly $290/$270

Get Away Today Vacations – MousePlanet sponsor Get Away Today Vacations sells five-day tickets at a slight discount over the Disneyland main gate price. 5-day Park Hoppers are $285 for adults ($265 for children); 5-day 1/park/day tickets are $255 for adults ($235 for children).

Check with your employer, school or credit union to see if any discounts are available through them.

Six Day, One Park per Day Ticket Six Day Park Hopper No longer offered by Disneyland – some travel providers may offer tickets for 6 days or longer as part of a package to international customers; residents of Canada, Australia, or the U.K. should check with local travel agencies to see what options may be available.
Disneyland Resort Annual Passports

  • Premier Annual Passport ($849) – valid at both Disneyland Resort and Florida's Walt Disney World Resort; includes parking.
  • Premium Annual Passport ($649) – includes parking.
  • Deluxe Annual Passport ($469)
  • Southern California Annual Passport ($329)
  • SoCal Select Annual Passport ($269)

Check with your employer, school or credit union to see if other discounts are available through them.

If you are already a Safari Club member, you can migrate your membership to the new Landry's Select Club at no charge, and start to earn points in the new program. The new Select Club eliminated the entree discount and free appetizer offer that was included with the Safari Club, replacing them with a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. If you are not yet a member of either the Safari Club or the Landry's Select Club, you can pre-purchase your membership before your trip. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 reward.

ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link).

With the new placement of The Royal Theater taking over the Carnation Plaza Gardens, will there be anymore weekend bandstand dancing? Have they moved that or gotten rid of it all together? (I LOVE the new Royal Theater that's going in, but am curious about our family tradition of the Gardens on Saturday night)

This question has been posed many times to Imagineers, Disney PR and some management heads and the consistant answer we, and everyone else have received, is "we're looking into it". In a pannel interview, Tony Baxter made note that the dance floor is still in place, the benches can be moved, and the sound system is one of the most advanced at the resort. The stage area has been significantly reduced by the installation of the show props, but I'm sure it's possible to still host bands there. The question is, will they. At this point in time it doesn't look promising. For now swing dancing is hosted Saturday nights in Downtown Disney.
