Disneyland Prepares for a World Premiere
This Saturday, May 7, Disneyland will host the world premiere of the fourth installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean movie franchise, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. Similar to the premieres for the first three Prates of the Caribbean movies, a massive screen is now erected on Tom Sawyers Island and grandstands have been built on the shores of Rivers of America. However, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides will have a new twist on Saturday because this premiere will be shown in 3-D.
Construction of the outdoor theater began last Monday. With less than a week until showtime, there is still some work to be done.

The scaffolding to support the screen is in place, but the screen probably won't be hung for a few more days. Gusty winds in Anaheim last weekend might be one of the reasons the screen wasn't up at the time the photos were taken.

The construction of the screen required so much material that a temporary bridge was erected to help facilitate the movement of labor and supplies to Tom Sawyer's Island.

Guests who walked behind the grandstands last weekend on the way to the Haunted Mansion or Critter Country could observe the intricate construction of these temporary structures. There is a familiar Erector Set feel for those of us who played with building toys as children. There is ever is even that sense of childlike improvisation where, instead of building additional scaffolding to add some height for a control room or projection booth, it was easier to stack three shipping containers to create instant office space.

Due to the fact that the construction for the Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides world premiere has taken over the Rivers of America, all of the attractions that use the waterway are closed. The Sailing Ship Columbia will most likely be used to help set the theme for the premiere, but the Mark Twain Riverboat is hidden safely out of view on the backside of Tom Sawyer's Island.

The walkway between Frontierland and New Orleans Square is so narrow due to the grandstands that Royal Street Veranda has been temporarily closed and converted to stroller parking for the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction.

Mark Twain Riverboat, Sailing Ship Columbia, Davy Crockett Explorer Canoes, and Tom Sawyer's Island should reopen by Friday, May 13. Fantasmic! is scheduled to return Saturday May 14.
Mother's Day Brunch Options
It's not too late to plan that special brunch for mom next Sunday at the Disneyland Resort. The Disneyland Hotel and Disney's Grand Californian Hotel & Spa combine to give guests three unique brunch options this year.
The grandest brunch is "Disney's Royal Buffet for Mother's Day" located in the Grand Ballroom at the Disneyland Hotel. This brunch offers carving stations, made-to-order omelets, Mickey waffles, salads, artisan cheeses, chilled seafood, cured meats, assorted breakfast selections, seasonal fresh fish and free-range chicken. A chocolate fountain will highlight the dessert offerings. Champagne is also included. There will also be a special section of the buffet for kids featuring pizza, orange chicken, mac & cheese and kid-friendly desserts.
Several Disney princesses will be present at the brunch in designated photo locations. Live musical entertainment will perform to set the royal mood.
"Disney's Royal Buffet for Mother's Day" costs $71.99 for guests 10-years of age and up. Children between the ages of 3 and 9 cost $20.99 and children 2 and younger are free. Premium annual passholders get a 15 percent discount. All other passholders get a 10 percent discount. The "Disney's Royal Buffet for Mother's Day" begins at 10 a.m. and lasts until 3 p.m.
Guests who prefer an earlier brunch that is a little less royal can choose between Goofy's Kitchen at the Disneyland Hotel or Storyteller's Cafe in Disney's Grand Californian Hotel & Spa. Both buffets will offer carving stations, made-to-order omelets, Mickey waffles, salads, artisan cheeses and assorted breakfast items. Both brunches will feature characters. Goofy's Kitchen will be hosted by Goofy and an assortment of other Disney characters. Storyteller's Cafe will feature Chip 'n Dale and friends.
Goofy's Kitchen costs $36.99 for for guests 10-years of age and up. Children between the ages of 3 and 9 cost $16.99 and children 2 and under are free. Premium annual passholders get a 15 percent discount. All other pass holders get a 10 percent discount. The Mother's Day brunch at Goofy's Kitchen begins at 7 a.m. and lasts until 2:45 p.m.
Storyteller's Cafe costs $29.99 for for guests 10-years of age and up. Children between the ages of 3 and 9 cost $13.99 and children 2 and younger are free. Premium annual passholders get a 15 percent discount. All other passholders get a 10 percent discount. The Mother's Day brunch at Storyteller's Cafe begins at 7 a.m. and lasts until 2 p.m.
Reservations for "Disney's Royal Buffet for Mother's Day," Goofy's Kitchen, and Storyteller's Cafe can be made by calling 714-781-DINE between 7 a.m. and 9 p.m.
Guest who prefer a Mother's Day brunch that is not a buffet can dine at Catal in Downtown Disney. Catal is offering a special three-course brunch from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for $40, and $12.95 for children younger than 10. You can see the complete menu for Mother's Day at Catal at the restaurant's website. Reservations for Mother's Day Brunch can be obtained by calling (714) 774-4442.
Ralph Brennan's Jazz Kitchen and House of Blues do not have special Mother's Day brunches planned but they will be serving their normal Sunday brunch menus.
Lemonade Mouth Visits Studio Disney 365
Last week the Disney Parks Blog reported that the cast of Disney Channel's Lemonade Mouth will visit Disney Studio 365 in the Downtown Disney District on Monday May 2.

The cast will participate in a Q&A hosted by Radio Disney on-air personality Ernie D. After the Q&A, the cast will hold a special CD signing for 200 guests who have purchased a Lemonade Mouth CD at Studio Disney 365, while supplies last.
Resort construction update
Construction on the Carthay Circle Theater continues despite the absence of the crane that has been present for the last few weeks. The basic steel framework is in place and the basic shape of the new building is visible.

...The Art of Disney Parks is releasing the latest Marie Osmond collectible doll "Disney's The Little Mermaid."

This porcelain doll was sculpted by Karen Scott. Like all Marie Osmond dolls, "Disney's The Little Mermaid" has been handcrafted with tremendous attention to detail and each doll has been hand numbered and hallmarked on the back of her neck with Marie's signature and edition size.
"Disney's The Little Mermaid" doll is limited to an edition size of 600 and is priced at $124.95, plus applicable tax and shipping fees. Collectors can purchase the doll beginning at 8 a.m. (PST) on Monday, May 2, 2011 at the Art of Disney Parks website.
...Last Wednesday the Disney Wonder began its repositioning cruise from Los Angeles up the West Coast for its first-ever voyage to Alaska.

The Disney Wonder left San Francisco Bay last Saturday afternoon but had to return to San Francisco after a few hours at sea in order to drop off a passenger in need of medical assistance. Shortly after the Disney Wonder reentered San Francisco Bay, the following tweet came from @MouseAdventure. "Attn teams: the @disneycruise Wonder has now been under the Golden Gate Bridge 3 times, soon to be 4. Just sayin'. #trivia.

...Disney sources have revealed, beginning May 2 most locations at the Disneyland Resort will no longer accept personal checks as a form of payment. All other forms of payment including major credit cards, debit cards, Disney Dollars, traveler's checks, Resort Key to the Magic card, and Disney Gift Cards will continue to be accepted. While there has not been an official announcement yet, guests visiting the Disneyland Resort should keep their payment options open and be prepared to use alternative forms of payment.
...Visitors planning trips to the Disneyland Resort should make a point to check the Current Refurbishment/Attraction Closures section each week for the most recent updates. The Disneyland Resort Web site currently only publishes refurbishment information about six weeks in advance. Be sure to check the most recent Park Update for the latest changes, as MousePlanet does not edit past Park Updates to reflect changes.

- Lost Bar, Croc's Bits 'n' Bites, Hook's Pointe and the Wine Cellar – closed. These four locations will be replaced by a new bar and fast casual restaurant during the ongoing Disneyland Hotel courtyard renovation project. During construction, the only remaining bar at the Disneyland Hotel is the Lounge at Steakhouse 55, which has extended its operating hours, and will be closing at 1:30 a.m. nightly.

Disneyland and Disney's California Adventure close earlier on these nights to prepare for the after-hours graduation parties.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau Web site (link). When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the Resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts.

Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Ticket ($99) – A discounted price offered to active or retired U.S. military personnel or their spouses. Based on past offers, Disney defines "Eligible Service Members" as active or retired members of the US military, including active members of the National Guard or Reservists and active or retired members of the US Coast Guard. This discount is available at MWR/ITT offices at your military base, or at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. Valid military ID is required. The price is the same for adults and children, and total of six tickets may be purchased per military member, regardless of who purchases the tickets (the member or their spouse). Tickets must be purchased by September 28 and used by October 1. The ticket has the following 2011 blockout dates: February 18–21; April 17–23; and July 1–4. As far as we can tell, there is no "fuse" on this ticket, so you may have more than the standard 13 days from first use to use the remaining two admissions, but we highly recommend you contact your base MWR/ITT office for more details before making travel plans. Please note that this ticket is not a "bonus" ticket, and so does not include an early admission day.

Available at the Disneyland Web site (link) where shipping is included if you order more than 10 days prior to your travel date. Four Day Park Hopper – Regularly $231/$199 |
Costco 4-Day Park Hopper Ticket ($199) – A special offer for Costco members who are also residents of Southern California, this ticket is currently not sold online but must be purchased in Costco stores. Unlike most other park hopper tickets, this ticket has no "fuse" - you can use the first admission today, and have until May 31, 2011 to use the remaining admission days before the ticket expires. The ticket is blocked out August 22-23 and the entire period between Dec 15, 2010 – Jan 1, 2011, and has an "upgrade value" of $151. The ticket states that visitors "Must reside within ZIP codes 90000-93599" and that "Proof of residency required upon redemption." The ticket you purchase at Costco is a valid admission ticket, and you can take it directly to a main entrance gate to use it. We've been told that, to prevent the unauthorized "transfer" of tickets between visitors (i.e., you use the first two days of the ticket and give it to a friend to use the second two days), visitors will be required to write their name on the ticket when it is first used for admission, and to show ID with that same name upon subsequent admissions. Obviously minor children will be exempt from the ID requirement, but will also be required to write their name on the ticket when it is first used. Adults should plan to have ID with them to use the ticket.

2011 Southern California CityPass ($276/$229) – This pass includes a 3-Day Disneyland Resort Park Hopper Bonus Ticket (including one early-entry day), a one-day admission to either San Diego Zoo or San Diego Wild Animal Park, as well as one-day admission to Sea World San Diego and Universal Studios Hollywood. The CityPass expires 14 days after first use at any location, and the first use must occur by January 3, 2011. Purchase CityPass through the Disneyland Web site (link) or on-site at the ticket booths of Disneyland Resort or the other theme parks included in the pass. You can also purchase directly from the CityPass Web site (link) though this has a minimum $7.50 shipping charge (no shipping charge from the Disney Web site if purchased more than 10 days in advance). You can also purchase the Southern California City Pass online from Costco at a cost of $259.99/$209.99 (link), which includes free UPS shipping. A 5% surcharge for non-members, and shipping fees to members in Alaska and Hawaii may also apply to your purchase. Booklets may be available for sale in some stores but varies widely. If you want to buy in person it would be best to call ahead and confirm availability. Hotel/Travel Packages
Costco Travel Packages – Many different travel packages including visits to Disneyland and Disneyland hotels are available through Costco.com. When purchasing a Costco Disneyland travel package, extras that will be included are: Mickey's Toontown Madness admission (currently available Mondays, Wednesday, Fridays, and Saturdays), a character breakfast collectible pin and lanyard, and a Costco luggage tag per person, plus a $20 Disneyland Resort gift card per package.

Character Dining Vouchers – Discounted character dining vouchers are available for purchase online, in advance of your trip, through Get Away Travel (link).
Disney Visa Discounted Stroller Rental – If you have a Disney Visa card you can rent up to two strollers at a discount of 50%. This offer is valid only at the Main Gate rental location between Disneyland and Disney California Adventure.
Rainforest Cafe Safari Club – Members of the Rainforest Cafe get priority seating when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days), and a 10% discount on entrees for up to four people. Additionally, after signing up, your membership card will be mailed to you and be accompanied by a $10 award good for your next visit to a Rainforest Cafe. So if you know you will be eating there while at Disneyland and have a Rainforest Cafe local to you, it may make sense to prejoin the Safari Club so that you can use the award during your trip. ESPNZone MVP Club – Membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25% increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link).
