Grad Nite mixes in with Monstrous Summer 24-hour all-nighter
One week following the announcement of "Monstrous Summer" and the planned two-park 24-hour "all nighter" at the Disneyland Resort, confusion remains regarding just how Disney plans on integrating the already planned Grad Nite with the 24 hour operation of Disney California Adventure park.
On Monday, April 29, Disney posted this on their Grad Nite Facebook page:
"Rest assured, that while some “Monstrous Summer” activities will take place in parts of Disney California Adventure during Grad Nite, these will not be in the area’s reserved for your special night, and most of the theme park will still be open exclusively for Grad Nite attendees beginning at 11 p.m.!"
This left many questions unanswered, such as, "What were those select areas?" and "What was meant by 'most of the theme park'?" On Friday, May 3, Disney made this clarification on Facebook:
"While some 'Monstrous Summer' activities will take place in parts of Disney California Adventure during Grad Nite, your party will still be private. Much of Disney California Adventure becomes Grad Central, including Cars Land and Paradise Pier, where you can enjoy exclusive use of select portions of the park and experience our world-famous attractions including Radiator Springs Racers and Tower of Terror. Be prepared to be wowed too, because we’re adding even more entertainment that will only be offered for the May 24th Grad Nite."
"Another exclusive benefit: with Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure both opening earlier on the 24th, your senior class can 'park hop' as early as 6:00 a.m. and as late as 9:00 p.m. After that the party continues at Disney California Adventure until 3:00 a.m. at the Grad Nite Private Party."
Note: These updates are coming from the Florida management team. When MousePlanet inquired, Disneyland responded with this clarification:
"Grad Nite participants will have private access to Cars Land, Paradise Pier and Twilight Zone Tower of Terror from 11 p.m. through 3 a.m. the evening of May 24."
This means that non-Grad Nite guests who are planning to stay in Disney California Adventure park between 11:00 p.m. and 3:00 a.m. can only access Pacific Wharf, Grizzly Peak, Condor Flats, Buena Vista Street, "a bug's land," and most of Hollywood Land during that time. This leaves the most popular areas of Disney California Adventure park, including Cars Land, closed to regular guests during the 24-hour "Monstrous Summer" event between those hours. For now, it appears Disneyland park is unaffected by the event after the high school seniors are moved across the Esplanade at 9:00 p.m.
Hotel rooms are also still available if you are planning on staying at a hotel between May 24 and 26. The Grand Californian, Disneyland, and Paradise Pier hotels still have vacancies, and range from $400 to $550 per night for a basic room depending on the hotel and date chosen. Many of the Disneyland area, Good Neighbor" hotels also still have vacancies as well for hundreds of dollars less per night.
Glow with the Show integrates with 'Magical' fireworks
The Disneyland firework show, 'Magical' made its customary summer-time return this past weekend, and features integration with "Glow with the Show" technology. "Glow with the Show" technology, which provides seamless synchronization of special Mickey Mouse light-up ear hats, was first introduced at Disney California Adventure's World of Color nighttime water and light show in 2012, and has since made its way to Fantasmic and the night-time Disneyland firework display.
Those who wear their Glow with the Show ears can also take advantage of a special, reserved-viewing location on Main Street U.S.A. on Friday, May 10 through Sunday, May 12, and again from Friday, May 17 to Sunday, May 19. If you plan to take advantage of this special viewing location, arrive early, as space is limited.
Also, annual passholders can take advance of reserved Fantasmic Glow with the Show viewing Friday, May 10 through Sunday, May 12, 2013. Passholders must register in person beginning at 3:00 p.m. in front of the Main Street Opera House on the day of the event they wish to attend. Registration closes at 8:15 p.m., or when capacity is met. When registering, you must present both your valid annual passport and Glow with the Show ears. Children under 3 years of age do not need to present an annual passport or Glow with the Show ears to register. Once registered, you receive a wristband that grants you access to the special viewing area for the 10:30 p.m. showing of Fantasmic.
If you don't already own a pair of Glow with the Show ears, purchase them for $25 at the Emporium, Pioneer Mercantile, The Star Trader, Gag Factory, Elias & Company, Rushin' River Outfitters, Tees, Hats and Tattoos, or at World of Disney. If you already own a pair, make sure to check your batteries before heading out to Disneyland for either of these events.
May merchandise events at the Disneyland Resort
There are many great merchandise events happening at the Disneyland Resort in the month of May, and not all of of them require theme park admission.
Saturday, May 18:
- ACME Archives Limited artist Louis Solis will be on hand at the World of Disney in Downtown Disney for the debut of the latest releases in the Character Key series. Louis will available for sign any Character Key art from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
- Artist Noah will be at the WonderGround Gallery in Downtown Disney from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. for a special "Crush" art event.
Friday, May 24 through Saturday, May 25:
- Katie Kelly will make an appearance from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Disney Gallery on Disneyland's Main Street U.S.A. for the debut of her latest art collection.
- Jerrod Maruyama will be at the WonderGround Gallery in Downtown Disney from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. to showcase his latest artwork.
Second chance to register for MouseAdventure Musical
The Spring 2013 MouseAdventure Basic and Advanced Divisions sold out faster than we expected, and since that day we've been inundated with requests from teams who missed registration. We've heard all of your feedback and looked very carefully at our event plans, and have found a way to add a very limited number of additional team spaces to the Spring 2013 event.
Registration has reopened, so tune up your instruments and get the band together because our next MouseAdventure will lead you on a music appreciation tour of the Disneyland Resort!
Sunday, May 19 – Basic Division: Disneyland Park
MouseAdventure Musical will provide a series of quests and challenges to be solved throughout Disneyland Park. The Basic division is a competitive event, with prizes going to the best new, returning and family teams.
Registration for the Basic Division is $155 per team, and includes admission to the post-event Award Ceremony. Each player will need admission to Disneyland on Sunday, May 19. MouseAdventure registration does not include theme park admission.
Sunday, May 19 – Advanced Division: Disneyland Resort
If you crave even more MouseAdventure, register for the Advanced division and try your hand at all of the Basic Division quests, many at a more difficult level, plus a few challenges inside Disney California Adventure Park and Downtown Disney. Prizes are awarded to the best new and returning teams.
Registration for the Advanced Division is $175 per team, and includes admission to the post-event Award Ceremony. Each player will need admission to Disneyland and Disney California Adventure on Sunday, May 19. MouseAdventure registration does not include theme park admission.
Sunday, May 19 – Day at the Park Division: Disney California Adventure Park
For brand-new teams who just want to get an idea of what this MouseAdventure thing is all about and returning teams that wish to play without the stress of competition, join us for some fun playing a sampling of past quests in Disney California Adventure Park. Teams play only for bragging rights, and there is no post-event Award Ceremony: results will be posted on the Web site about a week after the event. The MouseAdventure Day at the Park event features an extended sign-in period with a pre-game new player orientation session. Teams can also participate in a team T-shirt competition before the main event begins.
Registration for the Day at the Park Division is $90 per team. Each player will need admission to Disney California Adventure Park on Sunday, May 19. MouseAdventure registration does not include theme park admission.
Registration close on May 3, or whenever the division sells out. Space for each division is extremely limited. Players must be at least 6 years of age and one player on each team must be at least 18 years of age.

This and that...
… Following a three-week closure, Disneyland finally reopened Space Mountain this past weekend. As MousePlanet reported last month, Disney voluntarily cloed the attraction after it received a citation and notification of penalty from the State of California Division of Occupational Safety and Health (Cal/OSHA). The fines originated following a work-related injury last November. The Cal/ OSHA citation was followed with a series of voluntary attraction closures that involved Disney reviewing safety protocols.
… The El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood is currently presenting the motion picture Iron Man 3 and is offering guests a peek into the private collection of Stan Lee, writer of Marvel comics, now through June 19. The display includes rare comic books and collectables. Guests can also take their photo with a life-sized wax figure of Tony Stark. 2013- Grad Nite events – This party for high school seniors graduating in 2013 will be held on these dates in 2013: May 9, 10, 11, 15, 16, 17, 18, 22, 23, 24, 29, 30, 31; June 5, 6, 7, 12, 13, 14, 19, 20, 21. The 2013 event includes admission to Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure Park during regular operating hours, and a private party in Disneyland Park after the park closes to the public for the night.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. The CityPASS expires 14 days after first use at any location, and the first use must occur by January 2, 2014. Purchase CityPASS through the Disneyland website or on-site at the ticket booths of Disneyland Resort or the other theme parks included in the pass. Other Discounts
Military 3-Day Park Hopper Discount – active and retired U.S. military can now purchase up to six 3-Day Disneyland Resort Park Hoppers at the discounted price of $125 each, a 50 percent savings off the regular adult price. The tickets may be used through September 28, 2013 with block-out days from March 25 through April 5, and July 4.
Valid only for active duty or retired U.S. Military, including the National Guard, Reservists, and the U.S. Coast Guard. Valid and active U.S. Military (or Military spouse) ID required for purchase and admission. Limited to one (1) purchase of up to six (6) tickets per valid ID and Military member (or spouse) must accompany the persons using these tickets for Theme Park admission.
Annual Passholder offers – Disneyland has once again extended the 20 percent merchandise discount offered to Premium annual passholders. The discount is now valid through December 31, 2013.
Purchase with Purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced–price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and generally can not be combined—you must choose one of the eligible offers. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item.
Character Dining Vouchers – discounted character dining vouchers are available for purchase online, in advance of your trip, through Get Away Travel.
Disney Visa – cardholders have access to a private character meet-and-greet photo opportunity at Disney California Adventure, and receive one free 5x7 photograph per visit. Cardholders also receive 10 percent off qualifying merchandise purchases of $50 or more from Disney-operated retail stores, 10 percent off at selected Disneyland Resort restaurants, (Big Thunder Ranch, River Belle Terrace, French Market, Cocina Cucamonga, Steakhouse 55, PCH Grill and Storyteller's Café), and 20 percent off the "Welcome to Disneyland," "A Walk in Walt's Footsteps," and "Discover the Magic" guided tours. Landry's Select Club – members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days), and a 10 percent discount on retail purchases. This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club as of March 31, 2012. If you are already a Safari Club member, you can migrate your membership to the new Landry's Select Club at no charge, and start to earn points in the new program. The new Select Club eliminated the entree discount and free appetizer offer that was included with the Safari Club, replacing them with a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. If you are not yet a member of either the Safari Club or the Landry's Select Club, you can pre-purchase your membership before your trip. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 reward.
ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link).
