Main Street Market House and Disneyana close; construction on Starbucks begins
With the closure of the Main Street Market House and Disneyana stores, construction has begun on what will become the first Starbucks location inside Disneyland park, and the second in the Anaheim resort.
The Disneyana collectible shop moves to a new home inside the Bank of Main Street building, sharing space with the Disney Gallery, freeing up more space for the Main Street Market House when it reopens. The added capacity is in anticipation of the increased demand that serving Starbucks coffee will produce—Fiddler, Fifer, and Practical Cafe at Disney California Adventure park, the current and only location serving Starbucks coffee within the Disneyland Resort, has proven to be so popular with park guests that it is now one of the top-performing Starbucks store locations in the United States.
In order to calm concerns that Disneyland may place a Starbucks similar to the thousands that sit on street comers across America, Disney made sure to announce their intention of keeping the turn-of-the-century general store theme in place at the Market House. When the Market House reopens later his fall, guests will be able to enjoy an atmosphere of telephone party lines and checkers along with a half-caf venti skinny mocha.
OSHA-related attraction closures update
Last week, we reported on Disneyland's voluntary closure of Space Mountain, the Matterhorn Bobsleds and Soarin' Over California attractions following a citation and notification of penalty (PDF) from the State of California Division of Occupational Safety and Health (Cal/OSHA). The citation originated from a November 2012 accident where a maintenance worker slid from the roof of Space Mountain while performing his maintenance duties.
The three attractions were closed Saturday, April 13, to facilitate a re-review of Disneyland's safety protocols for cast members and contractors. One day later, the Matterhorn Bobsleds reopened. Soarin' Over California remained closed throughout this past week and reopened to guests on Friday morning, six days following the voluntary closure. Also on Friday, California Screamin' was closed for a few hours in the morning, and inspectors could be seen walking the tracks. The roller coaster reopened a few hours later. Disneyland Resort spokeswoman Suzi Brown told MousePlanet, "We took Screamin' down late voluntarily for work associated with our ongoing safety work."
Space Mountain, the only attraction named in the Cal/OSHA citation, remained closed throughout this past week. Disneyland posted signs and cast members in front of the attraction to inform guests that Space Mountain is "closed for refurbishment." The Disneyland online calendar lists Space Mountain closed through Wednesday, April 24, with the note "pending." When MousePlanet spoke with Disney last week we were given no indication as to when the attractions may reopen and at this point in time, guests should view the closure as day-to-day.
Celebrate Earth Day at the Disneyland Resort
Annual passholders can attend an exclusive double feature screening of two vintage, Disney nature-themed movies, Bear Country and The Ranger's Guide to Nature on Monday, April 22. The movies are screenings in the Stage 17 building in Hollywood Land at Disney California Adventure park beginning at 5:00 p.m., with the second feature starting at 7:30 p.m.
Annual passholders who want to attend need to register in person in front of the Stage 17 building beginning at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, April 22. A valid annual passport must be presented for all those in attendance over the age of 3. Those who have registered will receive a wrist band, granting them access to the movie screenings later in the evening. Stage 17 opens 15 minutes prior to start of screening and late arrivals will not be admitted.
Also during Earth Week, guests of both parks can pick up a special "Worm and Dirt Tart" dessert. The special dessert is available through Sunday, April 28 at the Plaza Inn and French Market inside Disneyland, and at Wine Country Trattoria inside Disney California Adventure.
Special Mother's Day dining at the Disneyland Resort
Mother's Day is less than three weeks away, and what better place to take her out to eat than at the Disneyland Resort? There are many options and special menus at the Disneyland Hotel, Disneyland and at the Grand Californian Hotel.
The largest event is held at the Disneyland Hotel. The Royal Buffet includes salads, artisan cheeses, seafood, fish, meats, and an assortment of desserts and pies. Cinderella herself will be on hand, as will live musical entertainment. The cost is $71.99 (adult) and $20.99 (ages 3 to 9). Diners can receive four hours of free parking at the Disneyland Hotel. Annual passholders discounts do apply.
The all-you-care-to-eat feast is held in the Disneyland Hotel Grand Ballroom from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 12.
At Disneyland, guests can treat their mothers to special menu items at the following locations:
- Blue Bayou – Prosciutto-wrapped halibut with forbidden rice and corn chowder. ($39.00)
- Carnation Café – Honey-mustard, lemon-roasted chicken with mashed potatoes and glazed baby carrots. ($16.99)
- Plaza Inn – Fruit-glazed salmon with mango-kiwi relish, rice pilaf and baby carrots ($16.99)
At Storytellers Café at the Grand Californian Hotel, guests can enjoy the traditional brunch buffet with special seasonal berries, made-to-order omelets, French toast and roasted salmon. ($31.99)
Space is limited, and these special dining events can fill up quickly. It is strongly recommended that guests make advanced reservations by calling Disney Dining at (714) 781-DINE (714-781-3463).
Orange County students receive Disney scholarships
The Disneyland Resort awarded scholarships to 10 Orange County students, each receiving $7500 to put towards their future academic goals. Disney selected the 10 students for excellence in community service and for their roles in volunteerism and leadership in the community. "The Disneyland Resort is proud to recognize these exemplary students for their commitment to excellence an their passion for serving others," said Michael Colglazier, president of the Disneyland Resort. "We look forward to their continued success and development as our leaders of tomorrow."
The Disneyland Resort began the program in 2006 and has since granted more than $425,000 in scholarships to graduating Orange County high school seniors. The students were surprised at their schools by Disney Ambassador Megan Navarette. Recipients will also have the opportunity to attend a Disney Youth Education Series leadership development course and have an invitation to participate in a community project with Disney VoluntEARS.
Recipients include:
- Carlos Castellanos (Katella High School, Katella), who started a club in his school to help other students learn how to get into college
- Alicia Frausto (Katella High School, Katella), who spent the last three years at Boysen Park feeding the homeless
- Gabrielle Gregory (El Toro High School, Lake Forest), who founded a club to help families with children going through cancer treatment
- Homin Kwark (Northwood High School, Irvine), who founded a student-led nonprofit to inspire scientific interest for his peers
- Nathanial Lam (Troy High School, Fullerton), who raised funds for the victims of the Japanese tsunami.
- Michael Salmond (Villa Park High School, Villa Park), who co-founded the Greater Orange Service League for young men to perform community service
- Katya Sutil (Oxford Academy, Cypress), who helped organize Christmas festivities at a local hospice
- Kathy Tran (Los Amigos High School, Fountain Valley), who organized events to empower other students to have an interest in different cultures
- Michelle Tran (Valencia High School, Placentia), who founded a student group that addresses community needs
- Robert Santaella (San Juan Hills High School, San Juan Capistrano), who worked with the Anaheim Police Explorers to help mentor those who wanted to become a police officer

New reservation policy on the table
The Disneyland Resort is adopting another policy from Walt Disney World, and will soon require a credit card number when diners make a reservation at a Disney-owned restaurant. Starting May 9 and affecting reservations after June 24, Disney is applying a cancellation fee of $10 per person to no-shows, or if a reservation is canceled with less than 24 hours notice. This policy impacts all table-service restaurants at Disneyland and Disney California Adventure, as well as at the three Disneyland Resort hotels.This and that...
...It looked as if the Disneyland Resort had been overlooked for this week's Limited Time Magic promotion, but after a little digging (pun fully intended), we discovered that this week's feature is one of the Earth Day desserts previewed by Disney Parks Blog author Pam Brandon. A "Worms and Dirt Tart" will be sold in Disneyland at the Plaza Inn and French Market, and at the Wine Country Trattoria in Disney California Adventure.
…The Mark Twain Riverboat has reopened following a multi-month refurbishment. The work included a new deck, paint, refinishing of the woodworking, and polished brass. The Mark Twain shines beautifully and looks brand new.
With the Mark Twain refurbishment complete, guests can also expect to see the sternwheeler return to the night-time performances of Fantasmic!
...Even though Disneyland's Crystal Shop is owned and operated by outside vendor Arribas Brothers, the One Disney mentality has still prompted a change in store policy. The store now charges an extra $3 per line to engrave a name or date on items purchased there, a service that has been free until now. The Anaheim location has dropped the price of some items to compensate for the change (some formerly $19 mugs are now $14.50), but prices on other items have remained the same or even gone up.

2013- Grad Nite events – This party for high school seniors graduating in 2013 will be held on 22 dates in 2013: May 9, 10, 11, 15, 16, 17, 18, 22, 23, 24, 29, 30, 31; June 5, 6, 7, 12, 13, 14, 19, 20, 21. The 2013 event includes admission to Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure Park during regular operating hours, and a private party in Disneyland Park after the park closes to the public for the night.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. Other Discounts
Military 3-Day Park Hopper Discount – active and retired U.S. military can now purchase up to six 3-Day Disneyland Resort Park Hoppers at the discounted price of $125 each, a 50 percent savings off the regular adult price. The tickets may be used through September 28, 2013 with block-out days from March 25 through April 5, and July 4.
Valid only for active duty or retired U.S. Military, including the National Guard, Reservists, and the U.S. Coast Guard. Valid and active U.S. Military (or Military spouse) ID required for purchase and admission. Limited to one (1) purchase of up to six (6) tickets per valid ID and Military member (or spouse) must accompany the persons using these tickets for Theme Park admission.
Annual Passholder offers – Disneyland has once again extended the 20 percent merchandise discount offered to Premium annual passholders. The discount is now valid through December 31, 2013.
Purchase with Purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced–price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and generally can not be combined—you must choose one of the eligible offers. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item.
Character Dining Vouchers – discounted character dining vouchers are available for purchase online, in advance of your trip, through Get Away Travel.
Disney Visa – cardholders have access to a private character meet-and-greet photo opportunity at Disney California Adventure, and receive one free 5x7 photograph per visit. Cardholders also receive 10 percent off qualifying merchandise purchases of $50 or more from Disney-operated retail stores, 10 percent off at selected Disneyland Resort restaurants, (Big Thunder Ranch, River Belle Terrace, French Market, Cocina Cucamonga, Steakhouse 55, PCH Grill and Storyteller's Café), and 20 percent off the "Welcome to Disneyland," "A Walk in Walt's Footsteps," and "Discover the Magic" guided tours. Landry's Select Club – members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days), and a 10 percent discount on retail purchases. This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club as of March 31, 2012. If you are already a Safari Club member, you can migrate your membership to the new Landry's Select Club at no charge, and start to earn points in the new program. The new Select Club eliminated the entree discount and free appetizer offer that was included with the Safari Club, replacing them with a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. If you are not yet a member of either the Safari Club or the Landry's Select Club, you can pre-purchase your membership before your trip. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 reward.
ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link).
