New Star Wars land details announced at Star Wars Celebration panel
Fans attending the 2017 Star Wars Celebration in Florida this weekend were treated to new details about the Star Wars lands currently under construction in Walt Disney World and the Disneyland Resort. For all of the press releases and blog posts—official and otherwise—published about the dual 14-acre lands, fans don't actually know all that much about them.
We've seen some lovely concept art, learned that there will be two attractions and a highly themed restaurant and lounge, and speculated endlessly over just how Disney plans to control access to the most anticipated new lands since... well, Wizarding World.

Nobody expected to see full-scale models or actual blueprints during the "Star Wars and Disney Parks: A Galaxy in the Making" panel, but the panelists, led by Walt Disney Imagineering creative executive Scott Trowbridge, shared some new details, which answered a few questions, but raised so very many more.
Disney has previously said the Star Wars lands are set on a planet in the Outer Rim, bordering the Unknown Regions, and are not a re-creation of a specific place from a Star Wars film. The panelists filled in a bit more of the story, saying this planet has served as a trading port for thousands of years, and has become a sort of haven for smugglers, traders, and the types of travelers who prefer to lurk around the fringe—"all of the interesting people," as Trowbridge put it.
Those interesting people will also include droids. "Droids are such an important part of the Star Wars universe," said Asa Kalama, "They add so much heart and humor." They will be part of the living environment of the village.
The living environment, as described in the panel, sounds like the next generation of the "Legends of Frontierland" game play-tested at Disneyland in 2014. “For those who are looking to delve a little bit deeper, lots of opportunities certainly will abound," Kalama said. "There are going to be a ton of opportunities to help out and support the Resistance, lots of smugglers and bounty hunters who are looking for a little bit of help and might be willing to offer you up a side job, and for those of you who are interested in supporting The First Order, that will absolutely be an opportunity as well.”
The interactivity could follow you onto the attractions. Describing the Millennium Falcon attraction, Kalama said, "You and your flight crew will be responsible for piloting one of the most iconic ships in the galaxy." He said that you will likely make it to your destination, but the condition of the ship at the end of the journey will be up to your crew—you could land the Falcon without a scratch, or practice "bumper bowling" off nearby rocks. "But this is a world where choices matter," Trowbridge interjected. "If you do that, there are consequences."
Kalama agreed. "If you bring the ship back pretty heavily damaged, chances are somebody is not going to be too happy about that." For interested visitors, he said, "An experience might begin on board the Millennium Falcon, but follow you right out the door of the attraction and into the local watering hole."
"You can essentially build a reputation in the star wars universe," Lucasfilm creative executive Pablo Hidalgo added. This implies a level of guest tracking we've not previously seen used at the Disneyland Resort, although Disney could certainly leverage the existing MagicBand technology in use at Walt Disney World for this purpose.
The panel confirmed that the Star Wars lands are on track to open in 2019, and showed an aerial view of the construction in Anaheim that shows just how much larger the land is than it appears from the usual vantage point of the Mickey and Friends parking structure.
Recruiters seek more workers for Tinker Bell half marathon weekend
We reported earlier this month that runDisney has contracted with two staffing agencies to provide hundreds of temporary workers to staff running events at the Disneyland Resort, ending a decade-long practice of using unpaid volunteers to staff the West Coast events. The first event to use paid labor will be the Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend in May.
Disney said the change was made, "in order to continue to provide the world-class experience our race participants have come to expect," and a Disney spokesperson told MousePlanet that the events would be staffed to the same level as in prior years. However, a recent email from one of the two recruiting agencies indicates that they are struggling to find enough workers to fill all of the shifts, especially people willing to show up at 2:30 a.m. on one or more of the three event days.
This does not come as a surprise when you consider that recruiting did not begin until April, when volunteer registration was to have begun in January, and that the simple volunteer sign-up system has been replaced with a formal hiring process.
For many volunteers, working past events simply meant signing up through a website and showing up for their chosen shift. Hundreds of other volunteers participated as part of an organized school or corporate event, and thus did not even have to do that much.
Now, prospective workers must go through a formal hiring process during which they complete several forms online, consent to a criminal background check, and complete another packet of new-hire paperwork in person or via courier. Several long-time volunteers we contacted about this change told us that there are too many hoops to jump through, and so they won't work future runDisney events. I admit I haven't yet returned my own employment packet, mostly because I haven't made time to get my passport and find a non-relative friend to fill out the remote I-9 employment verification form. Still, I'll be out on that 10K course Saturday morning, hoping these agencies recruited enough people to staff the water stations.
Past volunteers and interested new recruits can contact one of the two staffing companies, Apple One (DisneyRun@AppleOne.com) and Volt (cbarraza@Volt.com) to begin the paperwork. Workers receive $13 per hour. In addition to the very early morning on-course shifts on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, workers are also needed at the race expo on Thursday and Friday.
Dapper Day Spring Outing to Disneyland
The unofficial Dapper Day Spring Outing to Disneyland is scheduled to take place this Sunday, April 23. This popular event grows larger each year, so it's worth making note of the date if you plan to visit the park during this weekend.
While the Disneyland park outing is scheduled for Sunday, expect crowds all weekend. On Saturday, the Dapper Day Expo opens at the Disneyland Hotel. Admission is free starting at noon, although you can purchase a ticket for early bird entry starting at 10:00 a.m. Early bird entry also includes continental breakfast and a limited edition Dapper Day pin designed by popular artist Jarrod Maruyama.
During the expo, visitors can enjoy live entertainment, pose at various photo opportunities, and shop from a collection of fashion and lifestyle vendors. The expo closes at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday.
The Dapper Day Expo continues on Sunday (and runs from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.). This is the designated Disneyland park outing day, although there are no officially organized meet-ups or group photos. Just expect to see thousands of visitors in the park dressed in their Dapper fineries. More information is available at the event website.

Disneyland Resort Hotels
- Grand Californian Hotel Pools – closed through spring 2017. All three of the pools at the hotel will be closed for refurbishment, including the Redwood Pool and water slide, the Fountain Pool, and the Mariposa Pool. The cabanas will also close during this time. During the refurbishment, which is expected to last at least through March, people staying at the Grand Californian Hotel can use the pool facilities at the Disneyland Hotel or Paradise Pier Hotel.
- Pinocchio's Workshop – closed. No reopening date available.

- Star Wars – The Light Side Half Marathon Weekend – January 11–14, 2018. Registration has been delayed, and will open at a later, unspecified date.
School Holidays

2017
- Spring Break – Through April 29. The four-week period during which most local schools will observe a one-week spring holiday. Based on the blockout dates of the Southern California discount tickets, Disney expects the largest crowds April 9–23.
- Utah Education Association convention (UEA, a.k.a. "Utah Escapes to Anaheim") – October 19–20. Expect large attendance levels October 19–22 as Utah students and families take advantage of a 4-day weekend created by their school's participation in a state education convention. Not all Utah schools or teachers close for or attend UEA, but the impact on the Resort is usually noticeable enough to mention.
- Nevada Day – October 28. Nevada schools will be closed on Friday, October 28 to observe Nevada Day, creating a three-day weekend.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency.

Three Day Tickets |
The 3-Day So Cal Resident 1-Park Per Day ticket offers residents of Southern California and Northern Baja California admission to either Disneyland or Disney California Adventure on one day, and then a second visit to either park on another day on or before May 25, 2017. You can use both days of this ticket at the same theme park, or visit one park one day and the other park on the second day, but you cannot use it to enter both parks on the same day. The ticket is $149 for ages 3 and up. You can also upgrade this ticket to a 3-Day Park Hopper, which allows entry to both parks each day, for an additional $40, a savings of up to $106 compared to the box office price of a three-day park-hopper ticket. If purchased in advance of arrival, the three-day tickets include one Magic Morning admission. This benefit does not come with tickets purchased at the theme park ticket booths, so make sure to order online and print at home before you arrive. If purchasing at a participating third party ticket outlet, double-check that their 3-day tickets come with this feature. There is no "fuse" on this ticket, which means you can use the first admission today and wait until May to use the second (or third) admission. You must, however, purchase the ticket by May 22, 2017. 2017 Military Salute Offer Disney released details of its 2017 Military Salute offer for Disneyland and Walt Disney World last October, and the tickets are valid January 1 through April 8 and April 24 through December 19, 2017. At the time we first shared details of the offer, we did not know about (or Disney had not announced) a special PhotoPass promotion also available to military personnel. Through December 19, 2017, active and retired U.S. military personnel who are eligible for the Military Salute offer can also purchase the Disney PhotoPass Collection for $49, a discount of 50% over the usual $99 price. The Disney PhotoPass Collection includes digital downloads of all available PhotoPass photos linked to your account, a voucher for a dining print package and a Disneyland Resort Gallery Disc with 350 high-resolution professional photos from around Disneyland Resort. Southern California CityPASS |
Southern California CityPASS ($346/$314) – includes a 3-Day Disneyland Resort Park Hopper Bonus Ticket (including one early-entry day), a one-day admission to Sea World San Diego, and a one-day admission to LEGOLAND California. The CityPASS expires 14 days after first use at any location, and the first use must occur by December 31, 2017. Purchase CityPASS through the Disneyland website or on-site at the ticket booths of Disneyland Resort or the other theme parks included in the pass. You can also purchase directly from the CityPASS website, though a shipping charge may apply depending on how quickly you need the ticket. When you purchase the CityPASS, you have the option of adding a one-day admission to either San Diego Zoo or San Diego Safari Park for an extra $42/$34. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location. Recently, Disney has begun allowing customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item. Current offers:
Landry's Select Club – members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days). This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club, and runs on a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 birthday reward. We recommend that you prepurchase your membership before your visit so you can take advantage of the priority seating benefit. ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation).
