Lin-Manuel Miranda narrates Candlelight

It was a rainy Southern California weekend, but happily, the skies cleared in time each night for Disneyland to host its 2019 Candlelight processional on Main Street, U.S.A.

The multi-talented Lin-Manuel Miranda, (Mary Poppins Returns, Moana, Hamilton), was the celebrity narrator for all four weekend performances.

As is customary, Miranda took a moment at the conclusion of each performance for a few remarks. He noted there are many ways and traditions to celebrate this time of year, and said, "However you and your loved ones choose to do so, I hope you find your lives renewed with meaning and purpose."

He concluded his remarks by saying, "This holiday season, let us embrace every one of our tomorrows with hope and love and through this holiday spirit may we continue to spread peace and good will throughout the world." The latter was the same line delivered by Chris Pratt following the 2018 ceremony, so it seems Disney is providing the hosts with a script even for their personal remarks.

However, Miranda then told the audience that this was his family's first visit to Disneyland, adding, "This was a pretty good weekend to do it."

If you couldn't be there in person, the folks at DapsMagic shared full video of Saturday's performance on their YouTube channel. Enjoy it when you have an hour to watch:

Rise of the Resistance opens in Florida - what to expect from the Disneyland opening

The highly anticipated Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance attraction is now open at Disney's Hollywood Studios in Florida, giving Star Wars fans their first look at the ride that Bob Chapek. Chairman of Disney Parks, Experiences and Products, calls "the most ambitious, the most immersive, the most advanced, high-energy attraction we've ever created."

Out of deference to those readers who—like me—are trying to avoid spoilers about the new ride, I'm going to skip over the show elements of the ride entirely in this Update, and focus only on the operational aspects of actually getting onto the ride itself. If you really, really want to know everything there is to know about Rise of the Resistance before you experience it in person, scroll down and watch MousePlanet's full ride-through video of the attraction.

While Walt Disney World and Disneyland have very different operating plans in many areas, the opening of the new ride in Florida does give a preview of what we might reasonably expect for the West Coast debut on January 17. Although Fastpass isn't currently offered for Rise of the Resistance, Walt Disney World deployed the same "virtual boarding group" system used during the opening of Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge in May to spare park visitors an hours-long wait for the new attraction.

In Florida, park-goers could join a virtual queue as soon as they scanned their admission ticket to enter Disney's Hollywood Studios. Most visitors will do this using the My Disney Experience smartphone application, though those without smartphone access could use the existing guest relations kiosks set up around the parks to obtain a boarding group.

Once hopeful riders was in the virtual queue, they just waited for their boarding group to be called. According to operations cast members, the goal was for riders to have less than a 30-minute wait to board the ride after their boarding group was called to return to the attraction, but frequent ride downtime during the opening days has at times resulted in longer waits.

Since you can not even enter the virtual queue until you enter the park, it seemed pretty straightforward that fans could arrive at park opening, join the virtual queue and wait for their boarding group to be called. Unfortunately, that's not quite how it played out.

Though Hollywood Studios was scheduled to open at 8:00 or 9:00 a.m. each day since the new ride opened, the park has actually quietly opened as early as 6:00 a.m. with no advance notice. Those visitors who arrive extra early are able to join the virtual queue much earlier than expected, which has resulted in the virtual queue being completely full before the park was even scheduled to open most days. The conventional wisdom now is that riders should plan to be at the park entrance one to two hours before the announced opening time to have a good chance at securing a place in the virtual queue.

Rise of the Resistance merchandise is available at the Disneyland Resort in advance of the ride's January opening. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.

Like Walt Disney World, the Disneyland version of Rise of the Resistance will not offer FastPass in the first several months, and we expect Disneyland will also use the virtual queue to assign boarding groups and manage the wait for hopeful riders. What remains to be seen is what time Disneyland will open the virtual queue each morning, whether the ride will be offered during Extra Magic Hours and Magic Morning, and what plans are in place for the inevitable overnight queue before the ride's opening day. We've reached out to Disneyland for answers to all of these questions, and we will provide updates as the grand opening debuts.

The ride has a 40-inch height requirement, and riders who use a wheelchair must transfer to the ride vehicle to experience the entire attraction. Guests who cannot transfer from an ECV or wheelchair may be able to experience a portion of the preshow, but Disney will make accommodations on a case-by-case basis. The new ride offers descriptive audio and handheld captioning for riders with visual or hearing impairments.

Bob Chapek says that Rise of the Resistance is "immersive, experiential storytelling on a massive cinematic scale," and our Alan Dalinka in Walt Disney World seems to agree with that assessment. I personally can't wait to experience it myself in just a few weeks.

  • Gay Days at Disneyland (unofficial event) – October 2-4, 2020. More information on the event website.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

Current Discounts and Promotions

Disneyland prices as of January 6, 2019.

Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.

Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency like MousePlanet travel partner Get Away Today.

Purchase with purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced-price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location.

Disney usually allows customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item.

Character dining vouchers – Disneyland is no longer offering tickets or vouchers to be pre-purchased for Character Dining. You may still make reservations 60 days in advance with payment due at the restaurant.

Visit our Annual Passholders Blockout Dates page to see more dates. You can see future calendar schedules at Disneyland. As always, specifics are subject to change without notice (or occasionally, without us noticing) so when information conflicts between what is presented here and that presented by Disney, it is best to assume Disney's information is correct.

Visit the Park Hours section of our Disneyland Park guide for additional details about Magic Morning and Toontown Morning Madness, including available attractions. Entertainment schedule: Go directly to the Disneyland Resort schedule for this week at Disneyland.com here.

The Seasons calendar is published on the Disneyland website for the next eight to 11 months.
