Disneyland adopts Seasonal Pricing for one-day tickets; ticket prices go up AND down

On Sunday, February 28, both the Disneyland and Walt Disney World resorts introduced the Seasonal Pricing program for single-day admission, possibly the biggest change in Disneyland's admission strategy since the park discontinued attraction ticket books in favor of all-day passports. While most tickets increased in price 3 to 22 percent depending on level, the price of one ticket actually dropped for the first time in memory.

Disneyland Resort spokeswoman Suzi Brown tells MousePlanet in a written statement:

"The demand for our theme parks continues to grow, particularly during peak periods. In addition to expanding our parks, we are adopting seasonal pricing on our one-day ticket to help better spread visitation throughout the year. Multi-day tickets, annual passes and visiting during non-peak periods also provide our guests with options and savings."

The new pricing creates three ticket "seasons": Value, Regular, and Peak. At the Disneyland Resort, the price of a one-day adult admission ticket during Value season dropped from $99 to $95, while one-day admission during peak season increased to $119, an jump of 20%.

The extended queue was used at Pirates of the Caribbean to handle large crowds this weekend. Disneyland's new Seasonal Pricing system seeks to encourage some visitors to plan trips for less-crowded days of the year. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.

At the Disneyland Resort, Value season is mostly weekdays during the school year, and represents about 30 percent of the calendar. Regular season includes the summer and most weekends, and represents 44 percent of the year. The rest of the year is Peak season, which covers holiday travel period, and weekends in December and July. Disney says the Seasonal calendar will be posted online eight to 11 months in advance, and is currently published through December 31 of this year.

Seasonal pricing does not apply to multi-day tickets or annual passports, which should be a relief to vacation planners (and travel agents), who feared the rumored new pricing system would add another layer of complexity. However, multi-day tickets were also subject to the second price hike in under a year, with increases of up to 9 percent. Disneyland last raised prices on October 4, 2015.

The new system creates a strange situation where it may be less expensive to purchase two one-day tickets than to purchase a two-day ticket, depending on when you visit. The cost for a one-day ticket for a Value season day is $95, whereas a two-day ticket is $195, or $97.50 per day. If you are visiting on two Value days and do not intend to purchase a park-hopper ticket, you save $5.00 by purchasing separate tickets for each day.

As we reported last week, Disney has been replacing the current printed ticket price signs at the main entrance ticket booths with new digital signs. Some of these signs were put into use starting Sunday, but other booths have printed placeholder signs where their digital monitor has yet to be installed.

New digital price signs are in use at some Disneyland Resort ticket booths, making it easier for Disney to display updated Seasonal Pricing details. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.

We note that the new price signs at Disneyland present the cost of annual passports in terms of the monthly payment, instead of the total purchase price, where the old signs listed both the full price and the monthly payment price available to California residents. This might be another step towards a system where annual passports aren't truly annual, and passholders have the option to continue to pay a monthly "membership" fee at the then-current rate after their initial 12-month term expires (the company hinted at such a change when it stopped printing the expiration date on new annual passports).

There was a minor change to the monthly payment option available to California residents who purchase a new annual pass. The down payment for that pass has dropped to $95, the value of the least-expensive one-day ticket, so the monthly payments are adjusted upward by a few cents to make up the $4 difference over 12 months.

The 5-day ticket option was also removed from the new signs, but the ticket is still available for purchase online and at the Disneyland ticket booths.

There are no changes to parking or stroller rental fees. A chart of all new pricing is below.

The Wall Street Journal wrote about the possible change last October, quoting Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Chairman Bob Chapek as saying, "We have to look at ways to spread out our attendance throughout the year so we can accommodate demand and avoid bursting at the seams."

Universal Studios Hollywood also implemented a new pricing structure earlier this year, charging a premium on peak days and for all same-day ticket purchases. Their new system has five pricing tiers. Universal Studios visitors can receive discounts of up to $20 when they visit on low-demand days, but only if they purchase a date-specific ticket online in advance.

Disney's Seasonal Pricing plan does not require visitors to select a specific date when purchasing tickets online, and the ticket price is the same online as at the ticket booths. A Value Season ticket is good on any Value Season day, and tickets can be upgraded to Regular or Peak season after purchase if the visitor decides to use it a different day.

Some media are referring to this pricing schedule as "dynamic pricing," but that's somewhat of a misnomer. Disney's prices will be determined and published months in advance, and not subject to demand-based increases. As of publication time, Disney had released the seasonal calendar through the end of 2016. You won't get to Disneyland on a given Value season day and find that the company changed that day to Peak season pricing because of crowds.

MousePlanet has confirmed that tickets purchased prior to February 28 will be accepted on any day (Value, Regular or Peak) through the expiration date of that ticket.

Luigi's Rollickin' Roadsters opens March 7; passholders get preview on March 4

The doors of Luigi's Casa Della Tires will open again next week to the public, when Luigi's Rollickin' Roadsters officially opens at Disney California Adventure. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.

Luigi’s Rollickin’ Roadsters is officially opening on March 7, Disneyland announced last week. The ride in Cars Land at Disney California Adventure replaces Luigi's Flying Tires, and Disney claims it is the first attraction in a U.S. Disney theme park to use a trackless ride system.

Annual passholders will have the first opportunity to experience the new ride on Friday, March 4, following two days of cast member previews. The ride will be open 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday. Passholders need only show their valid AP at the attraction entrance to ride; no advance reservations is required.

It's possible that the ride will have unannounced "soft openings" on Saturday and Sunday, March 5 & 6, but we don't recommend making a special trip.

The height requirement for the new ride is 32 inches tall, and rider swap is available for families with children too small to ride. Two of the vehicles were designed with swing-open sides, like the ones used on Mater's Junkyard Jamboree, which allow guests using wheelchairs to transfer directly onto the vehicle seat. The ride does not offer Fastpass.

The construction walls will soon come down around Luigi's Rollicking' Roadsters, and passholder previews will take place on March 4. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.

Beyond the Berm

This week we're introducing a new section of the Disneyland Resort Update. Beyond the Berm will contain news from parks and attractions around Southern California. Don't worry, we're not losing our Disney focus. We just think readers may appreciate knowing about major events happing at the places might be planning to visit during your next trip to the Disneyland Resort. This week in Beyond the Berm:

...The Great Wolf Lodge is now open in Garden Grove, two miles directly south of the Disneyland Resort on Harbor Boulevard. The new resort boasts 603 hotel rooms surrounding a 105,000-square-foot private indoor water park. Rooms start at $288 per night, which includes water park passes. The resort does not offer day passes to the water park—you must be a hotel guest to visit. The resort is currently offering discounted "grand opening" rates for 2016 stays booked by next Sunday, March 6. Visit their website for details.

...Knott's Berry Farm's 2016 Boysenberry Festival is scheduled for March 19 to April 3. Visitors can sample boysenberry-inspired foods and beverages (including the iconic Fun Bun), and watch special live performances by groups including Kirk Wall and the Hillbillies (formerly of Disneyland), who will perform each night throughout the festival. The event is free with park admission; food items have an additional cost. Last week, Knott's surprised me with a lunchtime delivery of a warm Fun Bun to my office; the special delivery story is recounted on my MousePlanet blog.

The Fun Bun (a deep-fried cinnamon roll smothered with boysenberry cream cheese icing), is the signature dish of the Knott's Berry Farm Boysenberry Festival. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.

...Knott's Berry Farm also celebrates the 75th anniversary of their Ghost Town in a promotion that begins May 27 with the reopening of the park's GhostRider wooden roller coaster. The 75th anniversary celebration continues through September 5, 2016.

This and that...

...Disneyland's first president, Jack Lindquist, passed away Sunday morning. He was 88.

Jack Lindquist was honored with a window above Disneyland's City Hall. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.

Lindquist served as the president of Disneyland from 1990 to 1993, after working as a marketing executive for Disney throughout most of his career. He is credited for creating or helping develop a number of programs familiar to Disney fans, including the Ambassador program, Disney Dollars, and the iconic "I'm Going to Disneyland" campaign. He was named a Disney Legend in 1994.

Lindquist was named the Honorary Mayor of Disneyland. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.

Disney Chairman Bob Iger released the following statement Sunday morning, as word of Lindquist's passing spread through the Disney community:

“Jack Lindquist was a Disney original in every sense. He started his career as Disneyland’s first advertising manager, and later served as the park’s first president, a role he always referred to as ‘the best job in the world,’” said Robert A. Iger, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, The Walt Disney Company. “He made sure Disneyland was the Happiest Place on Earth for each guest who walked through the gates, setting the standard for every leader that followed. Those of us who had the good fortune to know Jack will always remember the kindness, humility and dedication that made him such an important part of this company and a true Disney Legend."

The Disney Gallery has a new railroad exhibit, with details of the trains at Disney theme parks around the world. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.

...The Disney Gallery reopened this week with a new exhibit focusing on Walt Disney's love of railroads. This exhibit is somewhat unique in that it includes not only the Disney Gallery space, but expands out into the theme park with additional displays at both the Main Street and New Orleans Square stations. It seems park managers and Imagineers are taking advantage of the year-long closure of the Disneyland Railroad due to the Star Wars Land construction to give visitors a much closer look at the railroad than would be possible during normal operation, and some of the new offerings are really compelling for railroad fans.

In a possibly related topic, a strange gizmo (for lack of the technical word, which I hope a more knowledgeable reader will provide) was installed in Fowler's Harbor, where the Sailing Ship Columbia is currently docked during the construction around the Rivers of America. The device has a compass inside the wood and brass housing. We hope this is the start of an exhibit about the sailing ship.

...While the theme park up the street is promoting its Fun Bun, two Disneyland Resort locations have their own entry into the fried food wars: Award Weiners in Disney California Adventure has a Zootopia-themed menu addition. The Banana "Corn Dog" is twist on a banana fritter, with two banana halves dipped in corn & honey batter, then deep fried like a corn dog. The bananas are served with a raspberry and chocolate dipping sauce, and cost $5.99

Over at Disneyland, the Hungry Bear Restaurant has a Churro Funnel Cake, which is a fresh funnel cake covered in cinnamon sugar, then drizzled with caramel sauce and topped with whipped cream. One taster commented, "You know it's sweet when you need the whipped cream to cut the sugar." $6.49

...We wrote last week about the Share Your Ears promotion, and Disney's pledge to donate up to $1 million to the Make-a-Wish Foundation. Disneyland last week also released a limited-edition ear hat tied to the promotion, and will donate 100 percent of the $19.95 purchase price to Make-a-Wish. The navy blue ear hat is only available at the Disneyland Resort; the company has not made the hat available online. The hat is offered throughout the Disneyland Resort, though quantities are limited.

...Follow us down the rabbit hole as we explore MouseAdventure in Wonderland. This event, produced by Third Gate Games and sponsored by MousePlanet, will put you through a series of quests and challenges to be solved throughout Disneyland Park. The adventure will kick off at the AMC Theatre in Downtown Disney, and will wrap the day with an informal meet up at the resort.

Whether you've played every game since 2000 or are forming a team for your very first Adventure, there's a division that will suit you just right. More information about MouseAdventure can be found at www.mouseadventure.com, and recaps of past events are available on MousePlanet.

MouseAdventure in Wonderland will take place on April 10 at Disneyland; registration opens this Tuesday, March 1. Logo by Joe Stevano.

Registration opens this Tuesday, March 1 at 9 a.m. Pacific time at the MouseAdventure website. Players must register on the Third Gate Games forums in order to register a team. Basic team registration is $135 per team, and Advanced team registration is $150 per team. Each player will need admission to Disneyland Park on Sunday, April 10.

The starting location at the AMC Theatre has a smaller capacity than previous events, and there is a greater possibility that registration will sell out faster than it has for past events. So, get your party together, don't be late, and get ready for a MouseAdventure that is sure to be quite curious!

…The MousePlanet Newsletter is here! The newsletter contains a recap of the week's articles (in case you miss a day), news that may have developed since the weekly Updates were published, and tips about what's happening at the Disney theme parks for the coming weekend. We'll also include a fun MouseAdventure bonus, such as an Eye Spy or a trivia question. To subscribe to our free newsletter, just enter your e-mail in the box below.

2017

  • 2017 Star Wars Half Marathon Weekend – January 12–15, 2017. Registration opens June 14, 2016.
  • "Use It or Lose It" weekend – January 28–29, 2017. Our designation for the final weekend of January, which marks the deadline for cast members, community groups and Club 33 members to use their remaining complementary admission tickets from the 2016 allocation.
  • 2017 Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend – May 11–14, 2017. Registration opens September 20, 2016.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

Non-Disney Resort Events

Notable events at parks and attractions around Southern California. If you know of an event that should be listed here, please send us an e-mail (link).

  • Knott's Berry Farm Boysenberry Festival – March 19 – April 3
  • Knott's Berry Farm Ghost Town 75th Anniversary – March 19 September 5
  • Universal Studios The Wizarding World of Harry Potter grand opening April 7, 2016

School Holidays

Notable school holidays that may impact park attendance. If you know of any other holidays that should be listed here, please send us an e-mail (link).

2016

  • Spring Break(s) – March 14 – April 8. Most local schools are closed one week during this period. Expect the majority of school closures—and crowds—the weeks immediately before and after Easter Sunday, March 27.
  • Local School Holiday – Monday, March 28. Most local schools not already on Spring Break will be closed for Cesar Chavez Day.
  • Nevada Day (observed) – Friday, October 28. A school holiday for our neighbors to the northeast creates a 3-day weekend and usually adds to the Halloween weekend crowds. Some Nevada schools take the entire week off as a Fall Break.
  • Utah Education Association convention (UEA, a.k.a. "Utah Escapes to Anaheim") – October 20–21. Expect holiday-level crowds October 19–24 as Utah students and families take advantage of a Fall Break scheduled around an annual state education convention. Not all Utah schools close for UEA, but the impact on the resort is significant enough to mention.
  • Thanksgiving Break – November 21–25. Many local schools close for the entire week of Thanksgiving.
  • Winter Break – December 19, 2016 – January 6, 2017. Most schools close only two of these three weeks, but some districts close all three weeks due to the Saturday Christmas.

Egg-stravaganza 2016

Egg-stravaganza returns for the fourth time March 2 through 27. New for 2016, the egg hunt has expanded to Downtown Disney, in addition to hunts inside both Disneyland and Disney California Adventure. A dozen oversized eggs decorated with images of Disney characters will be placed around each of the three hunt locations. Egg hunters first purchase a special map and stickers to help locate these eggs, and then place the stickers in the corresponding spots on the map.

The maps are $5.95 plus tax (a $1 increase from 2015), and no discounts apply. Maps are sold at the following locations:

  • Disneyland – Disneyana, Disney Showcase, "it's a small world" Toy Shop, Little Green Men Store Command, Piece of Eight, Pioneer Mercantile, Stromboli's Cart.
  • Disney California Adventure Elias & Co., Humphrey’s Service & Supplies, Off the Page, Oswald's, Sarge's Surplus Hut, Treasures in Paradise.
  • Downtown Disney Anna & Elsa's Boutique, D Street, Disney Pin Traders, WonderGround Gallery, World of Disney.
  • Disneyland Resort Hotels Acorns Gifts & Goods (Grand Californian Hotel), Mickey in Paradise (Paradise Pier Hotel), Fantasia Shop (Disneyland Hotel)

Once complete, participants return the map to a redemption location to claim their prize—one of six different two-inch-tall "eggs" featuring all-new character designs for the 2016 promotion. Redemption centers are located at Elias & Company at Disney California Adventure, Disney Showcase in Disneyland, and World of Disney in Downtown Disney.

If you are only in it for the eggs, you don't need to complete the egg hunt to claim your prize—just buy your map at a redemption center and receive your egg. The eggs are awarded randomly, but you may be able to trade with other collectors to complete a set if that is your goal.

Current Discounts & Promotions

Disneyland prices as of February 28, 2016

Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.

Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency.

Additional Discounts

Did we miss an offer? If you know of an authorized discount on Disneyland Resort tickets, standing offers for Annual Passholders from non-Disney vendors, or other promotions which might interest our readers, please drop us a note!

Discounts for:

Everyone

Purchase with Purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced–price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location.

Recently, Disney has begun allowing customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item. Current offers:

  • Disneyland Cooler Tote for $19.95 with a purchase of $25 or more.
  • Disneyland Throw Blanket for $19.95 with a purchase of $40 or more.

Landry's Select Club – members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days). This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club, and runs on a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 birthday reward. We recommend that you prepurchase your membership before your visit so you can take advantage of the priority seating benefit.

ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link).

Character Dining Vouchers – discounted character dining vouchers are available for purchase online, in advance of your trip, through Get Away Travel.

Visit our Annual Passholders Blockout Dates page to see more dates. You can see future calendar schedules at Disneyland. As always, specifics are subject to change without notice (or occasionally, without us noticing) so when information conflicts between what is presented here and that presented by Disney, it is best to assume Disney's information is correct. Thanks for the update, as always. So I've got a question about Jack Lindquist. If he was the first DL president, and he only served from 1990 to 1993, was there no president from 1955 to 1990?

Correct. Disneyland didn't use the title before that.
