Light crowds turn out for second Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge opening day

Last Monday's no-reservations-required opening day for Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge at Disneyland continued the trend we've seen over the past month, with lighter-than-feared crowds turning out to visit the new 14-acre expansion. Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge reached capacity by 8:24 a.m. on opening day, prompting Disney to put into use the virtual queue designed for the new land.

By all reports the system worked extremely well, and crowds dropped off enough that Disney discontinued the virtual queue around 5:30 p.m. Monday night, making the land open to all with no wait. The virtual queue was not needed the rest of the week, and delighted fans enjoyed the freedom to come and go from the Black Spire Outpost at will. We have some tips for first-time visitors in "Lessons from the second opening day for Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge." You're free to skip the pointers regarding the Virtual Queue at this point—we likely won't see that system in use much if at all this summer.

This isn't to say that Galaxy's Edge isn't extremely popular, just that Disney's publicity engine seems to have worked—perhaps too well—in keeping massive crowds at bay. Manageable crowds are great news for fans who did make the journey to a galaxy far, far away, but it isn't quite the stress test of the new land and the related infrastructure that Disney managers may have hoped for, especially as it looks to the August 2019 opening of the second Galaxy's Edge, at Walt Disney World.

The low turnout is also a big hit to Disney's bottom line, and the company last week announced two new promotions (detailed below) aimed at getting fans thinking about visiting Disneyland sooner rather than later.

Passholder bring-a-friend offer returns

Now through August 30, 2019, Disneyland Resort annual passholders can purchase one-day park-hopper tickets for friends and family at a savings of up to $100 off the ticket booth price. This Bring-a-Friend offer is a repeat of a summer 2018 promotion and the ticket is actually less expensive, though the terms are a bit different.

Passholders must purchase these discounted tickets in person at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths, and the tickets are only good for admission on the date they are purchased. Passholders can only purchase these tickets for days their own pass is valid, or must also purchase a ticket for themselves to enter the park that day in order to buy guest tickets.

There is a limit of three discounted tickets per day per passholder, and the passholder must enter the parks with their guests.

This promotion was very unusual for Disneyland when it was announced in 2018, and is absolutely astonishing for summer 2019, coming as it does the same week that Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge opened to the public. Attendance is clearly lighter than Disney managers are comfortable with, and this is one effort to increase attendance without resorting to lifting annual pass blockout dates as the company also did last summer. That said, Disney has lifted all self-admission blockout dates for cast members for the rest of the summer, and lifted main entrance pass blockout dates through July 12 (with the exception of the Fourth of July).

How can I miss you if you won't leave?

Disney's second surprising announcement last week was that the Main Street Electrical Parade will return to Disneyland park for a limited-time engagement August 2 through September 30, 2019.

The Main Street Electrical Parade will make another appearance at Disneyland this August. MousePlanet file photo.

After Disneyland announced the parade's last return engagement in 2017, I wrote:

Based on the reaction on social media, there are thousands upon thousands of MSEP fans who are giddy about this news. I truly wish I could join them in their glee. The Main Street Electrical Parade plays a very prominent role in my Disneyland memories—both my very first, as well as my most treasured. When the parade famously had its "farewell season" at Disneyland in 1996, I was there for most of that summer and fall to watch the final performances. I joined the throng of people who followed the last float to the parade gates after the final public performance, and collected the light bulbs Disney later packaged and sold to collectors. MSEP is the parade of my childhood, and I treasure it.

However, the parade will be 40 years old when it returns to Main Street, U.S.A. Its technology is painfully dated when compared to more recent parades like Paint the Night, SpectroMagic, Dreamlights, and—dare I say it—even Light Magic.

But maybe this is all part of the plan. It may be that the only way Disney could permanently retire MSEP is to bring it back home, let the fans say farewell one last time, and finally give it the Ol' Yeller treatment. Disneyland gets a marketing hook and attendance hook during an otherwise slow season, fans get a chance to say goodbye, and everyone feels better when it's all over.

Two years later, my feelings haven't changed—even after having the opportunity to take my own children to see the parade during the second farewell season. The Main Street Electrical Parade deserves better than to be trotted out for a marketing campaign, then sent back to storage. If the parade is going to stick around, it deserves an update and overhaul.

Of course, Disneyland already has that updated electrical parade, and it's called Paint The Night. Disney has given no hints about the future of that parade, which ended its own return engagement run at Disney California Adventure in November, 2018.

Inside Out Emotional Whirlwind opens

Inside Out Emotional Whirlwind is open on Pixar Pier, marking the end of the transformation of Paradise Pier. The ride is the focal point of the fourth and final neighborhood along Pixar Pier, anchoring the Inside Out Headquarters section. It sits on the former location of the Maliboomer attraction, tucked into a curve of The Incredicoaster.

The ride itself is not new, but the Flik's Flyers attraction from "a bug's land" with a new theme. That said, the setting for the relocated ride will delight fans of Inside Out, and there are a number of fun elements to enjoy while waiting in line, including new attraction music from composer Michael Giacchino.

Pixar Pals parking opens

The new Pixar Pals parking structure opened on Sunday, adding 6,500 new parking spaces to the Disneyland Resort. The structure is adjacent to the Mickey and Friends structure, and features a shared security checkpoints and tram loading area that will service both parking structures.

The new structure has a dedicated entrance from Magic Way, directly across from the parking entrance to Downtown Disney. Whenever the inevitable fourth hotel and/or Downtown Disney expansion takes over the current Downtown Disney parking lot, we expect the Pixar Pals structure will become the designated parking area for the shopping district. Work continues on a pedestrian bridge over Magic Way connecting the new structure to Downtown Disney, and crews are still wrapping up paving and landscaping projects at ground level.

In addition to the Magic Way entrance, the Pixar Pals structure is connected to the Mickey and Friends structure at each parking level, and can be parked in even when the Magic Way entrance is not in use. The new structure also has twice the elevators as the Mickey and Friends structure, a benefit for parents with strollers, and visitors who use wheelchairs.

Even as Disney opens this new structure, work continues on the Toy Story parking lot southeast of the resort. That lot will eventually feature a dedicated security checkpoint and much-needed restroom facilities.

Come CHOC Walk with Team MousePlanet

Registration is now officially open for the 2019 CHOC Walk in the Park, to be held Sunday, August 11 at the Disneyland Resort.

Team MousePlanet will return for our 12th consecutive walk to support Children's Hospital Orange County. Thanks to the efforts and generosity of our readers, Team MousePlanet has raised over $75,000 for CHOC since 2008. We invite MousePlanet readers, friends, and family members to join our team for the event.

When you register for the event, you can opt to donate directly or fund-raise the registration fee.

  • Early Registration – walkers can opt to pay nothing at the time of registration, but must donate or fund-raise a minimum of $85 by Monday, July 29 to participate.
  • Late Registration – walkers pay a fee of $95 at the time of registration to secure their place at the walk.

Why Join Team MousePlanet?

COMMUNITY! Walking with Team MousePlanet is a great way to spend a morning with MousePlanet staff and readers, all while raising money for a great cause. Stay after the walk and enjoy Disneyland with your fellow Disney fans.

CONVENIENCE! If you register during Early registration and meet your fundraising goal, Team MousePlanet will handle check-in for you. No need to drive to check in the week before the walk to collect your wristband and T-shirt. You need only meet us in Downtown Disney the morning of the walk to collect your goodies, then head right into Disneyland to start the walk.

If you prefer to have your shirt and wristband before the walk (some people like to personalize them), there is an option to have those items shipped to you.

The deadline to join Team MousePlanet and meet the $85 fundraising requirement in order for us to handle check-in for walkers is Monday, August 5. We still welcome those who register after this date, but they must handle their own check-in.

In addition to helping support an outstanding local charity, one of the benefits of participating in the CHOC Walk is the opportunity to purchase specially priced Disneyland tickets to use in the weeks after the walk. Walkers who meet the $85 fund-raising minimum can purchase a 1-Day 1-Park Disneyland Resort ticket for $67 (reg. $122 to 149), or a Disneyland Resort 1-Day Park Hopper ticket for $93 (reg. $172 to 199). This is a discount of up to $106 off the ticket booth price of these tickets.

The tickets can ONLY be purchased by registered walkers in person at the Disneyland Resort on the day of the walk. You must present your CHOC Walk in the Park wristband to a Disneyland Resort Ticket Booth to purchase the discounted tickets.

NEW FOR 2019: A maximum of one ticket may be purchased per wristband.

The tickets are valid starting Sunday, August 11, 2019, and must be used by September 10, 2019. The tickets are not valid August 31 through September 3, 2019.

Are you ready to CHOC Walk with Team MousePlanet? It's easy to sign up—just visit our team page.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

Current Discounts and Promotions

Disneyland prices as of January 6, 2019.

Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.

Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency like MousePlanet travel partner Get Away Today.

Everyone

Purchase with purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced-price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location.

Disney usually allows customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item.

Character dining vouchers – Disneyland is no longer offering tickets or vouchers to be pre-purchased for Character Dining. You may still make reservations 60 days in advance with payment due at the restaurant.

Annual Passholders

Disneyland Resort merchandise – Disneyland has once again extended the additional 20% merchandise discount offered to Disney Signature Plus, Disney Signature, Disney Premier, and Premium annual passholders, this time through December 31, 2019. All other passholders receive a 10% merchandise discount. Visit the Annual Passholder discount page for specific details and exclusions.

Guided tours – 15% off the regular price of six guided tours – Walt in Walt's Footsteps; Cultivating the Magic; Discover the Magic; Happiest Haunts; Welcome to Disneyland; and Holiday Time at Disneyland. Visit the Annual Passholder discount page for specific details and exclusions.

Dining – 10–15% off at a variety of Disneyland Resort locations, including Disney-owned and independent restaurants. Visit the Annual Passholder discount page for specific details and exclusions.

Visit our Annual Passholders Blockout Dates page to see more dates. You can see future calendar schedules at Disneyland. As always, specifics are subject to change without notice (or occasionally, without us noticing) so when information conflicts between what is presented here and that presented by Disney, it is best to assume Disney's information is correct.

Visit the Park Hours section of our Disneyland Park guide for additional details about Magic Morning and Toontown Morning Madness, including available attractions. Entertainment schedule: Go directly to the Disneyland Resort schedule for this week at Disneyland.com here.

The Seasons calendar is published on the Disneyland website for the next eight to 11 months.
