Happy Anniversary, MousePlanet

I want to take a moment to thank the hundreds of MousePlanet readers who took time out of their busy D23 Expo schedule to stop by the MousePlanet booth and say hello, snap selfies, and collect lanyards and buttons this weekend. We all look forward to this biannual event for the opportunity it provides for the MousePlanet community to gather in person. We met readers from all across the country, and even overseas, and were truly overwhelmed by your compliments. The MousePlanet staff and writers also took advantage of this opportunity to get together, some meeting in real life for the first time. The timing of the D23 Expo was perfect for an early celebration of MousePlanet's own 17th anniversary on Monday, July 17.

The D23 Expo is a massive undertaking for us, and it took an entire team of MousePlanet staff and writers, plus some amazingly dedicated readers, to pull it off. In no particular order, and at the risk of leaving someone out, I want to thank everyone who helped this weekend. Alan Dalinka, Todd Pickering and Karl Buiter covered the panels and presentations, and kept readers informed via Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Periscope and YouTube. The MousePlanet booth would not have happened without Tony Phoenix, Teresa and Ken Whitmore, Shoshana and Adam Fischer, Adrienne Krock, Lisa Stiglic, Butch Shomph, April R. Dean Japson, Renee Ruiz, CJ Clark, Cheryl Martin Susan and Marley Brady, Rachel Bachman, and Michael and Guy DeRose.

On the final night of the Expo, Disney confirmed there will be another D23 Expo in 2019. We look forward to seeing you all again in Anaheim for the next Expo, and right here on MousePlanet every day until then.

Dissecting the Parks and Resorts announcements

For fans of the Disney parks, a highlight of the D23 Expo is the Parks and Resorts panel, where Disney executives provide a look at projects under development for Disneyland, Walt Disney World, Disney Cruise Line, and the Disney resort hotels. We expected that the 2017 panel would provide additional details about the dual Star Wars lands being constructed in California and Florida, and we were not disapointed. The presentation also included details about big changes at Disney California Adventure, and a preview of the 2018 marketing campaign in both parks.

I'll dive into each major announcement for the Disneyland Resort below, and Alan Dalinka will cover the East coast news in his Walt Disney World update.

For a different sort of Update, watch Alan and me discuss the announcements and share our views in this replay of the Facebook Live video we recorded during the Expo.

MousePlanet's Alan Dalinka and Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix discuss all the news from D23 Expo.

Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge

Given that construction of the West Coast version of the Star Wars land—now officially named Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge—is months ahead of the Florida edition, it was no real surprise when Disney Parks Chairman Bob Chapek announced that the new land will first open in 2019 at Disneyland, followed by the Disney's Hollywood Studios version later the same year.

During the Parks and Resorts presentation, Chapek shared a video fly-through of the model, offering yet another perspective on the land. Chapek also disclosed that Rex, the former pilot of the Star Wars attraction, will be the DJ of the new Cantina planned for the land.

Rex will be one of several well-known and new characters to inhabit Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge, and during the Expo, fans got a peek at one possible new addition. A fully autonomous Droid named "Jake" spend some time roaming the Parks and Resorts pavillion, interacting with visitors and with the exhibit alike.

Super Hero Universe

According to Chapek, Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: Breakout! is currently the top-rated attraction at the Disneyland Resort. Star-Lord and friends will eventually be joined by Spider-Man and the Avengers in a new "completely immersive" Super Hero Universe planned for Disney California Adventure. No further details were provided.

Pixar Fest

Chapek revealed plans for Disneyland's Summer 2018 marketing campaign. Pixar Fest will take place in both Disneyland and Disney California Adventure, and features a new fireworks show for Disneyland. As part of the promotion, the Pixar Play Parade will move to Disneyland, and the Paint the Night parade will move to Disney California Adventure, where the longer, wider parade route will provide more opportunity for fans to see the nightly performances.

Disney did not give any details about future plans for Disneyland's current daytime parade, Mickey's Soundsational Parade, or indicate whether the current "limited time" encore engagement of the Main Street Electrical Parade might be extended once more beyond the announced August 20 end date.

Pixar Pier

One of the more perplexing revelations from the D23 Expo was the announcement that Paradise Pier in Disney California Adventure will become Pixar Pier, bringing another new theme to an area that has already been renovated once to match a Pixar ride, Toy Story Midway Mania. More details were in a Disney Parks Blog article posted online during the presentation, which stated, "you will discover whimsical neighborhoods filled with your friends from The Incredibles, Inside Out and even more of your pals from Toy Story."

That article also said the permanent addition will open in 2018, making it unlikely that new rides will be constructed by then. More likely would be a retheming of existing Paradise Pier attractions, like California Screamin' and Mickey's Fun Wheel.

Not addressed in either the presentation or the press release is the plan for the Paradise Pier Hotel. Is Disney also planning a Pixar makeover of that hotel, to go along with the new theme of the land of the same name? The company did announce that the Hotel New York at Disneyland Paris would be rethemed and renamed Disney’s Hotel New York: The Art of Marvel, so a similar treatment of the Paradise Pier Hotel seems within the realm of possibility.

Fantasmic returns

D23 Expo attendees who were lucky enough to get a seat inside the Parks and Resorts panel received a big perk: Passes for a reserved viewing area to see the surprise early return of Fantasmic on Saturday and Sunday nights. The show officially reopened on Monday, July 17, the date of Disneyland's 62nd anniversary.

Online spoilers abound, but we'll try to be a bit more circumspect here for our readers who still want there to be some mystery when they see the show in person. We have previously reported that the show would include new sequences from Aladdin, Tangled, The Lion King, and Pirates of the Caribbean. It's now widely known that Captain Jack did indeed boot Captain Hook from the deck of the Sailing Ship Columbia.

Beyond the addition of new scenes, the entire show has been revamped for its 25th anniversary with new musical score and stunning new lighting effects.

We've included a few photos here, and those who don't care about spoilers can head to our YouTube channel later this week for a full presentation of the new Fantasmic, and an interview with David Duffy, Creative Director, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts.

Possibly the most controversial change in the show was the decision to replace Captain Hook with Captain Jack Sparrow. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.

CHOC-tastic discount ticket promotion

We have the details of the 2017 CHOC-tastic discount ticket promotion for those who participate in the 2017 CHOC Walk on Sunday, August 27 at the Disneyland Resort.

In addition to helping support an outstanding local charity, one of the benefits of participating in the CHOC Walk is the opportunity to purchase discounted Disneyland tickets during the CHOC-tastic promotion. Walkers who meet the $85 fund raising minimum can purchase a 1-Day 1-Park Disneyland Resort ticket for $57 (regularly $91 to $124), or a Disneyland Resort 1-Day Park Hopper ticket for $86 (regularly $151 to $174).

The tickets can only be purchased by registered walkers in person at the Disneyland Resort on the day of the walk. You must present your CHOC Walk in the Park wristband to a Disneyland Resort Ticket Booth to purchase the discounted tickets. Each walker with a valid wristband can purchase up to five tickets, which represents a savings of up to $440.

The tickets are valid starting Sunday, August 27, 2017, and must be used by September 23, 2017. The tickets are not valid September 1 to 4; September 15, or September 20 to 22.

Join Team MousePlanet for the 2017 CHOC Walk in the Park

Registration is now officially open for the 2017 CHOC Walk in the Park, to be held Sunday, August 27, 2017 at the Disneyland Resort.

Thanks to the efforts and generosity of MousePlanet.com readers, staff and contributors, Team MousePlanet has raised over $62,000 for CHOC Children's since 2008. We invite all MousePlanet readers, friends, and family to join us at the 2017 walk, as we celebrate a decade of giving.

The minimum fundraising commitment for all walkers (ages 3 and up) is $85. When you register for the event, you can opt to register as a Fundraising Bear or a Busy Bear:

  • Fundraising Bears pay nothing at the time of registration, but must raise a minimum of $85 before the event to participate.
  • Busy Bears pay a fee of $95 at the time of registration to secure their place at the walk. CHOC will mail the event T-shirt and wristband before the walk.

Why Join Team MousePlanet?

COMMUNITY! Walking with Team MousePlanet is a great way to spend a morning with MousePlanet staff and readers, all while raising money for a great cause. Stay after the walk and enjoy Disneyland with your fellow Disney fans.

CONVENIENCE! If you register as a Fundraising Bear, Team MousePlanet will handle check-in for you. No need to drive to Orange the week before the walk to collect your wristband and T-shirt. You need only meet us in Downtown Disney the morning of the walk to collect your goodies, then head right into Disneyland to start the walk.
If you prefer to have your shirt and wristband before the walk (some people like to personalize them), register as a Busy Bear and those items will be shipped to you.

The deadline to join Team MousePlanet and meet the $85 fundraising requirement in order for us to handle check-in for walkers is Friday, August 18. We still welcome those who register after this date, but they must handle their own check-in.

Are you ready to CHOC Walk with Team MousePlanet? It's easy to sign up - just visit the CHOC Walk website. You can opt to join Team MousePlanet during the registration process.

If you have any questions about the event, join the discussion on our MousePad forum.

2018

School Holidays

Notable school holidays that may impact park attendance. If you know of any other school holidays that should be listed here, please send us an e-mail (link).

2017

  • Utah Education Association convention (UEA, a.k.a. "Utah Escapes to Anaheim") – October 19–20. Expect large attendance levels October 19–22 as Utah students and families take advantage of a 4-day weekend created by their school's participation in a state education convention. Not all Utah schools or teachers close for or attend UEA, but the impact on the Resort is usually noticeable enough to mention.
  • Nevada Day – October 28. Nevada schools are closed on Friday, October 28 to observe Nevada Day, creating a three-day weekend.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

Non-Disney Resort Events

Notable events at parks and attractions around Southern California. If you know of an event that should be listed here, please send us an e-mail (link).

Knott's Berry Farm

Legoland California

  • Brick-or-Treat – Saturdays in October.
  • Holidays at Legoland – November 24, 2017 through January 1, 2018
  • Kids' New Year's Eve – December 31.

Current Discounts & Promotions

Disneyland prices as of February 28, 2016.

Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.

Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency.

Military

2017 Military Salute Offer

Disney released details of its 2017 Military Salute offer for Disneyland and Walt Disney World last October, and the tickets are valid January 1 through April 8 and April 24 through December 19, 2017.

At the time we first shared details of the offer, we did not know about (or Disney had not announced) a special PhotoPass promotion also available to military personnel.

Through December 19, 2017, active and retired U.S. military personnel who are eligible for the Military Salute offer can also purchase the Disney PhotoPass Collection for $49, a discount of 50% over the usual $99 price. The Disney PhotoPass Collection includes digital downloads of all available PhotoPass photos linked to your account, a voucher for a dining print package and a Disneyland Resort Gallery Disc with 350 high-resolution professional photos from around Disneyland Resort.

We've recapped the 2017 Military Salute offer below, and you can find all of the detailed terms and conditions on our MousePad discussion forum.

Discount Type Description
Ticket discounts

Through December 16, 2017, active and retired U.S. military personnel (including active and retired members of the United States Coast Guard, National Guard, and Reservists) or their spouses can purchase:

  • Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets for $156 each [an increase of $13 from the 2016 offer]
  • Disney Military Promotional 4-Day Park Hopper Tickets for $181 each [a new option for 2017]

Disneyland tickets may be used through December 19, 2017, except that the tickets may not be used April 9–23, 2017.

Active and retired U.S. military personnel can purchase Disney Military Promotional Tickets for themselves and up to five additional family members or friends. No more than six Disney Military Promotional Tickets may be purchased by any eligible member of the U.S. military (or spouse) pursuant to this offer. All tickets and options are nontransferable and must be used by December 19, 2017.

Hotel discounts

The new offer is valid most nights from January 1 through December 19, 2017. Like the ticket offer, hotel discounts are not valid April 9–23, 2017

Disney does not publish the actual discounted rates, and instead asks eligible U.S. military personnel to call (714) 520-7088 to check pricing, availability and to make reservations. In past years, the offer was generally 30 to 40 percent off, based on room category.

Unlike the Walt Disney World version, the Disneyland offer allows the eligible service member to book up to two rooms, and allows spouses (with valid and proper ID) to qualify in the absence of the service member.

PhotoPass
discount

Through December 19, 2017, active and retired U.S. military personnel who are eligible for the Military Salute offer can also purchase the Disney PhotoPass Collection for $49, a discount of 50% over the usual $99 price.

Everyone

Purchase with Purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced–price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location.

Recently, Disney has begun allowing customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item. Current offers:

  • Disneyland Snowman Mickey Tote for $19.95 with a purchase of $25 or more.
  • Disneyland Throw Blanket for $19.95 with a purchase of $40 or more.

Landry's Select Club – members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days). This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club, and runs on a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 birthday reward. We recommend that you prepurchase your membership before your visit so you can take advantage of the priority seating benefit.

ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link).

Character Dining Vouchers – discounted character dining vouchers are available for purchase online, in advance of your trip, through Get Away Travel.

Southern California residents

The 3-Day So Cal Resident 1-Park Per Day ticket offers residents of Southern California and Northern Baja California admission to either Disneyland or Disney California Adventure on one day, and then a second visit to either park on another day on or before May 25, 2017.

You can use both days of this ticket at the same theme park, or visit one park one day and the other park on the second day, but you cannot use it to enter both parks on the same day. The ticket is $149 for ages 3 and up.

You can also upgrade this ticket to a 3-Day Park Hopper, which allows entry to both parks each day, for an additional $40, a savings of up to $106 compared to the box office price of a three-day park-hopper ticket.

If purchased in advance of arrival, the three-day tickets include one Magic Morning admission. This benefit does not come with tickets purchased at the theme park ticket booths, so make sure to order online and print at home before you arrive. If purchasing at a participating third party ticket outlet, double-check that their 3-day tickets come with this feature.

There is no "fuse" on this ticket, which means you can use the first admission today and wait until May to use the second (or third) admission. You must, however, purchase the ticket by May 22, 2017. Tickets expire May 25, 2017, and are blocked out April 9–23, 2017.

Read full details of this offer in the January 17 Disneyland Resort Update. You can either purchase tickets at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths, or online at Disneyland.com and print them at home. You can also purchase them at participating Disney Stores and authorized third party ticket outlets, including many local grocery stores.

Visit our Annual Passholders Blockout Dates page to see more dates. You can see future calendar schedules at Disneyland. As always, specifics are subject to change without notice (or occasionally, without us noticing) so when information conflicts between what is presented here and that presented by Disney, it is best to assume Disney's information is correct.

Visit the Park Hours section of our Disneyland Park guide for additional details about Magic Morning and Toontown Morning Madness, including available attractions. Entertainment schedule: Go directly to the Disneyland Resort schedule for this week at Disneyland.com here.

The Seasons calendar is published on the Disneyland website for the next 8-11 months.
