Disney Legends, 100,000 cupcakes and a $60,000 donation cap Disneyland's Diamond Celebration

Disney Legend Richard Sherman was on hand last Friday as Disneyland marked the park's 60th anniversary. Disneyland Resort President Michael Colglazier hosted a short ceremony in front of Sleeping Beauty Castle, which featured a performance by Sherman and singer Ashley Brown.

Some spectators noted they would have preferred Colglazier to individually introduce the Disney Legends present in the audience, including Dick Van Dyke and Marty Sklar, rather than just mentioning them as a group.

Disney used the ceremony to announce its new Million Dollar Dazzle corporate philanthropy campaign. During the Diamond Anniversary Celebration, Disney will award $60,000 gifts to local nonprofit organizations that "exemplify Walt Disney Parks and Resorts' Better Together philosophy." The first such donation was awarded to the Girl Scouts of Orange County.

Some of the earliest Disneyland employees were honored in a special cavalcade before the afternoon performance of Mickey's Soundsational Parade. The procession included:

  • Ron Dominguez, who lived on 10 acres of the land that would become Disneyland, and worked at the park on opening day. Dominguez would later become the executive vice president of Walt Disney Attractions, and a Disney Legend.
  • Bob Penfield, the last member of "Club 55" to retire from Disney. Penfield was a Disneyland project manager, and helped with the construction of Walt Disney World and Tokyo Disneyland.

  • Bill Sullivan, who turned a summer job as a ticket taker to a career with Disney that saw him named vice president of the Magic Kingdom. Sullivan was named a Disney Legend in 2005.

While Disneyland did not reach capacity on the anniversary, the park was noticeable busy, with many visitors accepting Disney's invitation to dress up for the occasion. Copies of a special 60th anniversary issue of The Orange County Register were distributed to the early arrivals, along with "I Was There" buttons.

Disney set up special photo opportunities throughout the park for the anniversary, recreating scenes from Disneyland days of old. Disneyland also prepared over 100,000 cupcakes to serve to visitors in both theme parks and at the three Disneyland Resort Hotels as part of the celebration.

Dates and details for Halloween Time and Mickey's Halloween Party

Disneyland is expanding Mickey's Halloween Party to 17 nights this year, and celebrating Halloween Time September 11 through November 1, according to last week's much-anticipated announcement.

Halloween Time – Friday, September 11 through Sunday, November 1

Halloween Time will feature nightly performances of the Paint the Night Parade and the Disneyland Forever fireworks show, which is great news for those who are planning fall trips to Disneyland. The bad news is that there will be 17 Mickey's Halloween Party nights during that period, which means Disneyland closes early to the public for the special event. World of Color – Celebrate will also be presented nightly through Halloween Time, so visitors who aren't attending the Halloween Party on a given night have something new to see in Disney California Adventure.

Disney has also mentioned the return of Haunted Mansion Holiday and Space Mountain Ghost Galaxy, and confirmed that the Hatbox Ghost will remain in the Haunted Mansion during the overlay. There was no specific confirmation whether the Big Thunder Ranch Halloween Carnival is returning this year, and it is not mentioned on Disneyland's Halloween Time website.

Mickey's Halloween Party

This after-hours event takes place on 17 nights this year, and requires a separate event ticket to attend. The special event includes trick-or-treat stations, themed entertainment, a performance of the event-exclusive Halloween Screams fireworks, and a performance of the new Paint the Night parade. Mickey's Halloween Cavalcade will not be presented this year.

Prices jumped quite a bit this year, with Halloween night tickets now $84, up from $77 in 2014, and the least-expensive advance purchase ticket available with an annual passholder discount now $63, up from $56 last year. The addition of three more event dates coupled with the $7 across-the-board price hike is no surprise given that all of the 2014 events sold out by the first week of October.

In a discussion on our MousePad forums, I wrote that I suspect Disney has realized that some locals are taking advantage of the three-hour "early" admission offered on party nights, and are using the party as their semi-annual trip to Disneyland. Someone planning to visit on Halloween day this year has the choice between buying a one-day ticket valid from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. (11 hours) for $99, or a Halloween Party ticket, valid from 4 p.m. to midnight (8 hours) for $84. Going the party route offers a slightly higher cost per hour, but a lower absolute price, smaller crowds, and access to exclusive Halloween entertainment.

The math is much more favorable on weeknights, when the choice is a $99 ticket valid for 10 hours, or a $77 event ticket valid for 8. If I were not a passholder and wanted to take my children for a special day at Disneyland, the Halloween event would an attractive option.

I also believe some vacation planners are buying a shorter multi-day pass for their Halloween Time visits, and adding a Halloween party ticket for the extra day. If I were planning a four-day trip to Disneyland, and wanted to go to the Halloween party, I might buy a three-day ticket and the Halloween party ticket. That's a $25 savings per ticket, which adds up for a family. I might use that extra money to book a character breakfast, and spend the morning in Downtown Disney or at the pool before going in for the party.

Advance purchase tickets for the Halloween Party go on sale tomorrow, Wednesday, July 22 for Disneyland Resort Annual Passholders, Disney Rewards Visa card holders, and Disney Vacation Club members. Passholders can purchase tickets online by logging into their account on the Disneyland website. DVC members and Disney Visa cardholders can purchase by calling (714) 781-4400, or in person at a Disneyland Resort ticket booth.

With no Annual Passholder or discounts offered for any of the Friday events this year, it's hard to guess which nights may sell out first. The October 9 event (CHOC Walk weekend), and the October 16 event (UEA school break) will probably sell out earliest. Halloween is a Saturday night this year, and will be very popular despite the premium.

We strongly recommend that you buy your event tickets as soon as you pick a date and avoid any disappointment. Disney does not post warnings when event dates are reaching capacity, and every year readers get caught off guard when their chosen date sells out before they can get tickets.

...A "Looking for Mickey" quest debuted on July 16, as a limited-time addition to the 60th Anniversary celebration. This event is similar to the Easter Egg-stravaganza offered in the spring. Customers purchase a quest guide at either Disneyland or Disney California Adventure, and also receive a pin trading lanyard. The Disneyland version has 20 questions, and is $19.95 plus tax. The DCA version is $12.95, and is $12.95 plus tax. No discounts apply, and there is a limit of two quest guides per person, per park.

Once you complete the quest to find the 20 or 10 hidden Mickeys, return to the redemption center in that park to receive your gift, a lanyard medallion with the anniversary logo. Disneyland's medallion is metal, while the medallion at Disney California Adventure is rubber. The quest guides are available while supplies last, and are expected to sell out this week. Once you have purchased a quest guide, you have until July 31 to redeem your medallion.

...Disney's PCH Grill debuted a new dinner buffet last week, the latest in a series of menu and operational changes for the often-overlooked diner at Disney's Paradise Pier Hotel. The new offering replaces the a la carte menu, and features dishes like create-your-own seafood stew; fried chicken; Baja-style fish tacos; a carving station. The children's buffet station offers macaroni and cheese, sliders and mini hot dogs. The wood-fired pizza oven is still in use, offering both savory and dessert pizzas, and there is a separate dessert station. The price is $27.99 for adults, and $13.99 ages 3 to 9. The dinner buffet is open 5:30-9 p.m. nightly

The ESPN Zone website says the buffet offers "Apple Walnut Salad, Build Your Own Burger/Tacos/Nachos Bars, Assorted Wings with dipping sauces, Blackened Whitefish, Assorted Desserts, and more!" ...The Made with Magic collection expanded last week with the addition of two new Souvenir Sipper cups. The cup sold at select Disneyland locations is molded in the shape of Chernabog, featured in Fantasmic. The Disney California Adventure version is themed to World of Color. Both cups have light-up elements that interact with nighttime shows, including Fantasmic and World of Color, and also the Paint the Night parade, Disneyland Forever fireworks and the Mad T Party.

The cups are $25 each, the base price Disney has established for all Made with Magic merchandise like ear hats, gloves and wands. For an extra $3, you get your choice of fountain drink, frozen lemonade or frozen carbonated beverage.

...Disney has added Audio Description services for the Paint the Night parade, the first time the Resort has used these services in a street parade. Visitors with visual impairments can obtain a handheld device from Guest Relations to use during their visit. The Audio Description service provides a verbal description of the parade floats and accompanying units and performers.

Audio Description is also offered for World of Color – Celebrate and Fantasmic, as well as on 20 attractions at Disneyland and Disney California Adventure. Handheld Captioning, which uses the same device to display the text of shoes and ride narration, is offered for Fantasmic and World of Color – Celebrate, as well as at 19 attractions. Additional services for visitors with hearing impairments include video or reflective captioning at several attractions, assistive listening systems (audio amplification) at 11 shows and attractions, and sign language interpretation at select live shows.

...Starbucks has released a new collection of mugs and tumblers for Disneyland's 60th Anniversary. The new collection is available at both the Disneyland and Disney California Adventure locations.

...Volunteer registration for the 2015 Avengers Super Heroes Half Marathon weekend opens today, July 21, at 9:00 a.m. PDT via the runDisney website. The event is November 12 to 15, 2015, and volunteers are needed for shifts Thursday through Sunday. Volunteers who work their scheduled shift(s) and meet Disney's Code of Conduct can receive a one-day Disneyland Resort park hopper ticket. Visit the runDisney website for more information and to sign up.

...MousePlanet reader MadasaHatter won the daily prize in Disneyland's Diamond Days sweepstakes, and enjoyed a VIP tour of the Disneyland Resort with their family. You can read their trip report on our MousePad discussion boards.

...MousePlanet is offering two unique items for sale via eBay's Giving Works program, with all proceeds going to Team Muscle Makers for Ulrich Congenital Muscular Dystrophy.

In 1996, Disneyland announced the Main Street Electrical Parade would "glow away forever," and launched a months-long "Farewell Season" that set attendance records at Disneyland park. To drive home the point that the parade was never coming back to Disneyland, the company even sold commemorative light bulbs said to be taken from the parade floats. "Forever" lasted less than five years, and in 2001, the renamed Disney's Electrical Parade debuted at the newly-opened Disney's California Park.

Before Disney brought the parade to DCA, the company was rumored to be considering ways to bring the beloved production back to Disneyland and Main Street, U.S.A. A MousePlanet reader came across some interesting proof of Disney's dual plans—a pair of fiber optic baseball caps embroidered with two different versions of the Electrical Parade logo. One hat has the Main Street Electrical Parade logo on the front, and the Disneyland logo on the back. The second hat has the Disney's Electrical Parade logo on the front, with the Disneyland Resort logo below. Both are marked "sample," and feature working fiber optic effects.

The auctions end Friday, July 24 at 7:00 and 7:05 p.m. (Pacific). Click the links below for more information, or to bid.

Passholders can purchase tickets online by logging into their account on the Disneyland website. DVC members and Disney Visa cardholders can purchase by calling (714) 781-4400, or in person at a Disneyland Resort ticket booth.
  • Dapper Day Fall Soiree (Unofficial event) – September 18. Details at the Dapper Day website.

  • Utah Education Association convention (UEA, a.k.a. "Utah Escapes to Anaheim") – October 15-16. Expect unusually large attendance levels October 16–20 as Utah students and families take advantage of a 4-day weekend created by their school's participation in a state education convention. Not all Utah schools or teachers close for or attend UEA, but the impact on the Resort is usually noticeable enough to mention.
  • 2015 Avengers Half Marathon Weekend – November 12–15. Most events are sold out, but space remains in the half marathon race. Details on the runDisney website.

2016

  • 2016 Star Wars Half Marathon Weekend – January 14–17. Most events are sold out, but space remains in the half marathon race. Details on the runDisney website.
  • 2016 Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend – May 5–8. Registration opens August 11, 2015.
  • Utah Education Association convention (UEA, a.k.a. "Utah Escapes to Anaheim") – October 20–21.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

Current Discounts & Promotions

Disneyland prices as of February 2015.

Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.

Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency.

2014–2015 Disney Military Promotional 3–Day Park Hopper Ticket ($132)

A discounted price offered to Eligible Service Members or their spouses.

The 2014–2015 U.S. Armed Forces discount is valid through October 3, 2015. Under this program, active and retired U.S. military personnel can purchase Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets for $132 each.

For the purpose of this offer, Disney defines "Eligible Service Members" as active or retired members of the U.S. military, including the National Guard, Reservists, and the U.S. Coast Guard. Valid military identification will be required for purchase. This discount is available at MWR/ITT offices at your military base or other at participating U.S. military sales outlets. The tickets are not available for sale at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. The price is the same for adults and children, and total of six tickets may be purchased per military member, regardless of who purchases the tickets (the member or their spouse). Disney has also clarified that the "Military member (or spouse) must accompany the persons using these tickets for Theme Park admission," which means you can not purchase these tickets and give them to someone who will be visiting without you present.

Unlike past years, this ticket is not blocked out on the 4th of July. As far as we can tell, there is no "fuse" on this ticket, so you may have more than the standard 13 days from first use to use the remaining two admissions, but we highly recommend you contact your base MWR/ITT office for more details before making travel plans. Please note that this ticket is not a "bonus" ticket, and so does not include an early admission day.

For complete information regarding Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets and discounted resort rates, military personnel may visit the Disneyland Resort website, or participating U.S. military base ticket offices.

Other Discounts

Did we miss an offer? If you know of an authorized discount on Disneyland Resort tickets, standing offers for Annual Passholders from non-Disney vendors, or other promotions which might interest our readers, please drop us a note!

Discounts for everyone

Purchase with Purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced–price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location.

Recently, Disney has begun allowing customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item. Current offers:

  • Disneyland Mickey Mouse Backpack for $19.95 with a purchase of $40 or more.
  • Disneyland Pin Trading Starter Set for $19.95 with a purchase of $25 or more.

Landry's Select Club – members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days). This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club, and runs on a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 birthday reward. We recommend that you prepurchase your membership before your visit so you can take advantage of the priority seating benefit.

ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link).

Character Dining Vouchers – discounted character dining vouchers are available for purchase online, in advance of your trip, through Get Away Travel.

Hi. It says that Halloween Time is through November 1. So, does that mean Christmastime happens November 2? Have they released dates for the holiday overlay in the park? Any idea if they will keep the 60th parades/fireworks/shows during holiday? Or, will they switch everything over to holiday parades/fireworks/shows? We were planning a trip for early November and want to see the holiday overlay, as well as the 60th and was wondering what anyone has heard. Thanks.

  2. By candles71

The official start to Christmas time is usually the Friday after Veteran's day (11/11).
Ghost Galaxy only takes a day or 2 to remove. (It only takes 4 days to install) It's a Small World will be down for overlay.
They have alreasy said Paint the Night will continue throughout. Whether they run the Christmas parade during the day is still speculation.
I don't remember what I've read here about fireworks.

  3. By stan4d_steph

Well that's a bummer. My nephews' first trip to the Disneyland Resort and there is a Halloween party that Monday. Guess they will have to skip Fantasmic and try to do the parade and fireworks on Sunday.
