Introducing the Disney Flex Passport
A $600 annual passport with just 15 blockout days? No, this isn't 2012—it's the new Disney Flex Passport, and it's poised to completely change the way you visit the Disneyland Resort.
This new pass has the same blockout dates as the Disney Signature Pass that sells for $1,149. The rest of the year is divided into "Good to Go" days, depicted in green on the new blockout calendar, and "Reservation" days, depicted in blue.
Good to Go days are exactly what they sound like: days you can just walk into Disneyland and/or Disney California Adventure with no prior planning. These are mostly Monday through Thursday and off-peak dates.
Reservation days require advance planning. These include those traditionally blocked out to the lower-priced passes, off-peak weekends, and the entire summer.
Passholders can hold up to two reservations at one time, up to 30 days in advance, and reservations are available starting at 7:00 a.m. each day. The reservation system operates on a rolling 30-day period, so you can make a new reservation as soon as you use or cancel one. Passholders can also go on as many "good to go" days as they wish.
Passholders will use the Disneyland website or smartphone application to make reservations to visit Disneyland, Disney California Adventure, or both parks, subject to availability. Passholders can link to friends or family members who also have a Disney Flex Passport, and make reservations for the entire group at once.
We don't know how many reservations are available for each date, and the number will likely fluctuate daily based on things like projected sales of single-day and multi-day tickets, hotel occupancy rates and special events. We also expect the parks to have differing reservation limits, so it's like reservations for Disneyland will fill up, but you could still get a reservation to visit Disney California Adventure that same day.
Disney released the access calendar for this pass through June 2020. For Disneyland, there are 147 Good to Go days and 229 Reservation days, along with the 15 blockout dates. For Disney California Adventure, there are fewer Reservation days, but even more Good to Go dates.

With the Disney Flex Passport, you can visit on a weekend, during Spring Break or on a school holiday. You can visit on the 4th of July, Labor Day, or Black Friday. You can go when it fits your schedule—you just need to plan ahead. That advance planning also allows Disney to better project attendance and staffing needs, creating a better experience for everyone.
However, this pass is NOT for everyone. This pass is perfect for the current SoCal Select passholder who is willing to pay the extra $200 per year to be able to make reservations to visit on what would otherwise be a blockout date for that pass. It's a good alternative for the person who really wanted the SoCal pass, which is no longer available for sale.
The Flex passport is definitely a more-affordable option for the Deluxe passholder who can be flexible about when they visit, and is willing to give up the certainty of being able to visit most Sundays for the possibility of being able to reserve Saturdays and during spring and summer break.
This pass is not a good option for people who can only visit during reservation-only periods, or who just don't like planning in advance. If you have a hotel reservation and need to know you can get into the parks on those dates, then this isn't the option for you. However, if you have a date-sensitive vacation planned, it might well be worth using a multi-day ticket for that first trip, then upgrading it at the end of your visit to the Flex passport to use on future visits where you can be more flexible.
Potential buyers should also note that the pass does not include Disneyland Resort parking, which is now $25 per day. That can add up, so frequent users should consider whether the Signature pass, which runs $1149 but includes parking, is a better deal for them.
This is also not a good option for passholders who can't commit to their plans. Passholders must also use the website or app to cancel reservations prior to midnight the day before their visit, or incur a no-show penalty. The first no-show is free, after the second you'll possibly get a warning, and after the third, Disney will cancel any future reservations and suspend your ability to make new reservations for a period.
The Disney Flex Passport is eligible for the monthly payment plan offered to California residents, and includes dining and merchandise discounts. In fact, the biggest downside to this new pass is that current Deluxe passholders can not downgrade to this pass, even if they forfeit the $200 price difference. Had it been an option when I purchased passes for my family, I would have opted for the Disney Flex Passport over the Deluxe pass, as this new pass gives me the option to reserve visits during the summer blockout period.
If the new pass is as popular as I think it will be, I can see Disney expanding the reservation system to all pass levels, possibly giving each tier of pass a greater allocation of reservation days to hold at once, and/or a longer window in which to make reservations.
In a year that has seen a number of major changes to the annual passport program, the Disney Flex Passport is the biggest of them all. Disney will begin selling the new pass on Tuesday, May 21, just 10 days before Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge opens to the public.
5th Day Free on Disneyland tickets

Details of the virtual queue for Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge
If you did not get one of the coveted general reservations to visit Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge between May 31 and June 23, and you don't feel like splurging on a Disneyland Resort hotel room to secure guaranteed entry, your first chance to visit Batuu is Monday, June 24. Instead of an advance reservation system, Disney will use a newly designed virtual queue to control access to Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge.
This free system shares some similarities with the existing Fastpass system, and is designed to let park guests spend more time enjoying other Disneyland attractions instead of standing in line outside the new land.
The easiest way to join the virtual queue is by using the existing Disneyland smartphone application. While the digital component operates almost exactly like Disney's added-cost MaxPass product, you do not need to purchase MaxPass to take advantage of the virtual queue.
Once inside Disneyland, a visitor can go to the Galaxy's Edge section of the app to check the status of the new land. If the land is open to everyone, visitors can head straight to Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge and enter with little to no wait. As soon as the land reaches capacity, the app will reflect the new status, and prompt the user to join a boarding group to enter at a later time.
Joining a boarding group is very similar to selecting a digital Fastpass. Users first select their party from a list of people to whom they are already linked in the Disneyland smartphone app, then click to add their party to the boarding group. The app will give you your assigned boarding group and tell you what group(s) are currently being allowed into Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge.
When it's time for your boarding group to enter Galaxy's Edge, the app will send an alert to your phone, and you have up to two hours to make your way to the Black Spire Outpost. This grace period allows visitors plenty of time should they be in the middle of a ride, parade, or meal when they get the alert.
If you don't use the Disneyland smartphone app, you can also join the virtual queue by going to one of several cast member-assisted stations throughout Disneyland. There, you will scan your admission media and receive a paper pass with your designated boarding group. In-park signage at the Guest Relations kiosks will display the current boarding group, so that you'll know if it's time to head back to Galaxy's Edge with your paper ticket.
Once inside Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge, there is no time limit—you can stay as long as you wish. For now, Disney says that Fastpass will not be offered for Millennium Falcon: Smuggler's Run, and seating at Oga's Cantina will be first-come, first-serve. However, Disney did reveal that mobile ordering will be offered at some Galaxy's Edge dining locations via the Disneyland app, which will make it easier to grab a bite to eat on Batuu.
Disney officials say they will use the virtual queue to help manage Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge crowds for as long as it makes sense. Follow these tips to make the most of the virtual queue:
- Download the Disneyland smartphone application (available for iOS and Android), and create an account.
- Link your admission ticket or annual passport to your account.
- Link the tickets or passes of your friends and family to your account. This will enable you to make plans for your entire group.
- Just as with Fastpass, your entire party must enter Disneyland before they can join the virtual queue, so you that can't send one person to the park to join a boarding group while everyone else sleeps in.
- Remember, you do not need to purchase the MaxPass feature to use the virtual queue with the Disneyland app, and Fastpass is not offered in Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge at this time.

It's been nearly two years since I stood on the floor of the 2017 D23 Expo as the curtain fell and Disney's Imagineers unveiled the massive scale model for Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge; two years since I first imagined myself as one of the tiny people in that model, wondering what it would be like to walk into the land. Tale of the Lion King opens June 7
The Palisades Stage in Paradise Gardens Park will be the home for the new Tale of the Lion King show, opening June 7 at Disney California Adventure. Disney shared a video last week from a workshop for the new outdoor show.

This new production definitely holds a bit of nostalgia for those of us who remember the Lion King Celebration parade from Disneyland, the floats from which were re-purposed as stages for the Festival of the Lion King show at Walt Disney World. A cast of 18 performers includes live musicians, singers and dancers. Creative director Susana Tubert says the production features all-new musical adaptations, and is "uniquely Disney and culturally authentic."
The Tale of the Lion King is part of Disney's marketing campaign for the re-imagined The Lion King, set to open in theaters July 19, 2019.
Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique online
This seems like something Disney could have done years ago, but the company has finally rolled out an online reservation system to book a transformation at the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutiques in Disneyland and Walt Disney World. Visitors to Florida can also make online reservations for the Pirate's League and the Harmony Barber Shop in the Magic Kingdom. [Side note: after having my son's first haircut at the Harmony Barber Shop, I am completely dumbfounded that Disneyland hasn't found a nook or cranny on their Main Street into which to wedge a small salon. But I digress.]
The reservation system requires users to have an online Disney account, and works just like the dining reservations. You can also make reservations using the Disneyland mobile app, though the selection does not appear as on option from the main "add plans" menu. Instead, you must navigate to the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique page, and use the "book experience" button.
As a reminder, Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique is only open to children ages 3–12, and the Disneyland boutique is closed May 16 through 23 as part of the Sleeping Beauty Castle refurbishment. Princess packages start at $65, and can run all the way to $450. Two Knight packages are available at $20 and $80.

What's with the crowds lately?
We had several questions via social media this week, asking why the Disneyland Resort has been so crowded. After all, spring break is over, schools are still in session, and the Star Wars crowds aren't expected until the end of the month. Isn't this supposed to be the slow season before summer?
There are a number of factors at play here, but the biggest impact is probably from the Limited-Time Southern California Resident ticket offer, which wraps up next week. The ticket must be purchased by May 20 and used by May 23, and there are lots of people trying to fit their second or third visit in before the tickets expire.
The summer passholder blockout season is also looming, with some passholders trying to get in as much park time as they can. May 30 is the last day for SoCal Select passholders to visit until September, So Cal passholders are blocked out from June 1 to late August, and Deluxe passholders only have two more Sundays to visit before they go to weekdays-only through June and then on summer hiatus until mid-August.
Finally, there are some people who expect the entire Disneyland Resort to be a crowded mess once Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge opens May 31, and are taking advantage of the pre-Batuu period to fit in their annual visit.
Simply put, it's probably not going to get any less crowded before summer, so plan accordingly. The best thing you can do to minimize the impact of any attendance spike is to arrive as early as possible in the morning, and take advantage of cooler temps and smaller crowds in those first precious park hours.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. The price is the same for all ages 3 and older, and each ticket includes one Magic Morning entry. You must purchase tickets by May 18, 2019, and use all entries within 13 days of the initial entry.
Six Day (or more) Tickets
No longer offered by Disneyland; some travel providers may offer tickets for 6 days or longer as part of a package to international customers; residents of Canada, Australia, or the U.K. should check with local travel agencies to see what options may be available.
Disneyland Resort Annual Passports
- Premier Annual Passport ($1,949) – valid at both Disneyland Resort and Florida's Walt Disney World Resort; includes parking and digital PhotoPass downloads. No blockout dates.
- Disney Signature Plus Pass ($1,399) – includes discounts, parking, digital PhotoPass downloads and MaxPass. No blockout dates.
- Disney Signature Pass ($1,149) – includes discounts and parking. Digital PhotoPass downloads are included only for renewing passholders who had the benefit on their original pass; new purchases do not include this benefit. Some blockout dates, including December holidays and other peak days.
- Disney Deluxe Pass ($799) – includes some discounts. Some blockout dates, including December holidays and other peak days. Park-specific blockout dates apply to all passes purchased, renewed or activated after June 2, 2018.
- Southern California Annual Passport ($599) – includes some discounts. Many blockout dates, including Saturdays, December holidays and other peak days. Park-specific blockout dates apply to all passes purchased, renewed or activated after June 2, 2018. Renewal only; not currently available for new purchase
- Southern California Select Annual Passport ($399) – includes some discounts. This pass has the most blockout dates, including all weekends, December holidays and other peak days. Park-specific blockout dates apply to all passes purchased, renewed or activated after June 2, 2018.
- Parking Add On ($249) – add-on to Deluxe, SoCal, and SoCal Select passes. Renewal only; not currently available for new purchase
Annual Pass Monthly Payment Program
California residents can take advantage of the monthly payment plan when purchasing any but the Premier Annual Passport.

Everyone
Purchase with purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced-price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location.
Disney usually allows customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item.
Character dining vouchers – Disneyland is no longer offering tickets or vouchers to be pre-purchased for Character Dining. You may still make reservations 60 days in advance with payment due at the restaurant.
Annual Passholders
Disneyland Resort merchandise – Disneyland has once again extended the additional 20% merchandise discount offered to Disney Signature Plus, Disney Signature, Disney Premier, and Premium annual passholders, this time through December 31, 2019. Character meet-and-greet at Disney California Adventure – cardholders have access to a private character meet-and-greet photo opportunity at Disney California Adventure, and receive one free image download per visit.
Star Wars Imperial meet-and-greet at Disneyland – cardholders have access to a private character meet-and-greet photo opportunity in the Star Tours Launch Bay in Tomorrowland. Offered daily from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. Darth Vader is once again the character featured at this location.

Service Members
Disneyland Resort Military Discounts
Ticket discounts
Through December 18, 2019, active and retired U.S. military personnel (including active and retired members of the United States Coast Guard, National Guard and Reservists) or their spouses can purchase:
- Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets for $178 each (an increase of $10 from the 2018 offer)
- Disney Military Promotional 4-Day Park Hopper Tickets for $198 each (an increase of $10 from the 2018 offer)
Disneyland tickets may be used through December 18, 2019, excluding the spring break blockout of April 14–22, 2019.
Active and retired U.S. military personnel can purchase Disney Military Promotional Tickets for themselves and up to five additional family members or friends. No more than six Disney Military Promotional Tickets may be purchased by any eligible member of the U.S. military (or spouse) pursuant to this offer. All tickets and options are non-transferable and must be used by December 18, 2019.
Hotel discounts
Military discounts are valid for stays most nights from January 1 through December 19, 2019. Travel must be completed by December 20, 2019.
Disney does not publish the actual discounted rates, and instead asks eligible U.S. military personnel to call (714) 520-7088 to check pricing, availability and to make reservations. In past years, the offer was generally 30% to 40% off, based on room category.
Unlike the Walt Disney World version, the Disneyland offer allows the eligible service member to book up to two rooms, and allows their spouse (with valid and proper ID) to qualify in the absence of the service member.
Photopass Discount
Eligible service members can purchase the Photopass Collection for $49 plus tax through December 21, 2019. The package includes digital downloads of all PhotoPass photos in the user's account when they redeem the voucher; a voucher for a dining print package, and a Disneyland photo disc with 350 stock photos from around the Disneyland Resort.

Here are some other details you should know about regarding the offers:
- Disney Military Promotional Tickets may be purchased at participating U.S. military sales outlets ONLY by Eligible Service Members (defined below) or their spouses (but not both), for use by themselves and other family members and friends, as provided herein. These Tickets may not be otherwise transferred, distributed or resold.
- Eligible Service Members are active or retired members of the U.S. military, including the National Guard, Reservists, the U.S. Coast Guard, the Commissioned Corps of the Public Health Service (PHS), and the Commissioned Corps of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
- The actual prices charged at the individual U.S. military base ticket offices for Disney Military Promotional Tickets may be less than the prices set forth above.
- Participating military sales outlets must require that Eligible Service Members (or their spouses) present valid military identification to purchase Disney Military Promotional Tickets.
- Disney 3-Day or 4-Day Military Promotional Tickets for admission to the Disneyland Resort expire and may not be used after December 19, 2019. Valid military identification will be required for purchase and use.
- No more than six (6) Disney Military Promotional Tickets may be purchased and (if applicable) activated by any Eligible Service Member or spouse (regardless of the place of purchase and whether purchased by that person or that person’s spouse). In addition, one of the six (6) tickets purchased must be used by the Eligible Service Member or his/her spouse.
- Each Disney Military Promotional Ticket must be used by the same person on any and all days.
- The Photopass Collection can be purchased only in person at Kingswell Camera Shop in Disney California Adventure, or at Main Street Photo Supply in Disneyland.

Costco Travel Packages – many different travel packages including visits to Disneyland and Disneyland hotels are available through Costco.
Disney's Resort Magic and Good Neighbor Magic Packages – these package includes accommodations in one of the three resort hotels or at one of 40 Good Neighbor hotels, along with theme park admission. The packages also come with a variety of extra inclusions and bonuses, usually a souvenir pin and lanyard, and discount coupons for various Downtown Disney merchants.
