The Tivan Collection opens at DCA
With a wave of his arms, actor Benicio del Toro declared the Tivan Collection open at Disney California Adventure last week, and Guardians of the Galaxy fans flocked to the park since then to see what the fuss is all about. The Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: Breakout! officially opened to the public on Saturday, and boasted standby wait times exceeding five hours each day of the holiday weekend.
Reaction to the ride has been mixed, but nowhere more so than on social media. Yet the divide doesn't seem to be among park-goers who come off the ride with differing opinions, but between people who enjoy the ride, and those who resent that the ride exists at all.
I have made no secret of my strong personal distaste for the Collector's Fortress that replaced the Hollywood Tower Hotel. I don't like the the pipe-and-satellite-dish vibe, I don't think it fits at all with the carefully redesigned Buena Vista Street, and I don't like the way the building looks from various vantage points throughout the Disneyland resort.
Even hearing Imagineer Joe Rhode explain that it was supposed to look as if a bubble of the Marvel cinematic universe had popped and deposited this structure next to the Red Car Trolley barn wasn't enough to overcome my dislike for the show building.
Yet when I returned to ground level following my first time riding the attraction and was offered a chance to go again, I was the first one to raise my hand. I would have gone a dozen times, because this ride is quite simply a blast. In all, I got to experience four of the six songs, and I'm looking forward to checking the last two off my list.

Summer of Hero (Sandwiches)
Disney's foods department wants you to Hero Up to the counter this summer to try out a menu of special treats designed for the Summer of Heroes. Six Hollywood Land locations—including a not-yet-open kiosk—feature over three dozen items, ranging for cinnamon-spiked donuts to habanero-spiced tacos.
I had the opportunity to sample some of the items, and highly recommend The Most Dangerous Tacos in the Galaxy. The barbacoa beef tacos are topped with green onion slaw, purple cabbage, pickled onions and habanero salsa, and are served on green tortillas. The Savory Strength Falafel Pita is also delicious, and a much-needed vegetarian option.
Even the desserts have a kick to them. The Spider Bite donut, one of several varieties offered at Schmoozies until 11:00 a.m. each day, comes with a squeeze tube of cinnamon creme that you can inject into the pastry.
The Disney Parks Blog posted a listing of the new menu items and where to find them. All of those shave ice creations will help keep you cool as you wait in an hours-long line for the new Guardians of the Galaxy ride.
Avengers Training Initiative
The Marvel version of the Jedi Training Academy opened this weekend, giving children ages 4 to 12 the opportunity to train with Black Widow and Hawkeye. Something goes terribly wrong, of course, and it's up to the young heroes to save the day.

Disney Junior Dance Party!
The new Disney Junior Dance Party! debuted last week at Disney California Adventure, with character performers replacing the charming puppets from prior versions of the show. Doc McStuffins and Sofia the First now appear in their life-sized aspects in this show, joined by Timon (representing The Lion Guard), and Mickey and Minnie from the new cartoon series Mickey and the Roadster Racers.
Lisa Stiglic will also share her thoughts on this show later this week, but for those who can't wait to see it in person, we've posted the full video from opening day.

…Three Animation Building attractions close this week for refurbishment. The Animation Academy is closed May 30 to June 2. Turtle Talk with Crush is closed until June 9. The Sorcerer's Workshop also closes Tuesday, but the reopening date not available.

Disneyland Resort Hotels
- Grand Californian Hotel Pools – closed through spring 2017. All three of the pools at the hotel will be closed for refurbishment, including the Redwood Pool and water slide, the Fountain Pool, and the Mariposa Pool. The cabanas will also close during this time. During the refurbishment, which is expected to last at least through March, people staying at the Grand Californian Hotel can use the pool facilities at the Disneyland Hotel or Paradise Pier Hotel.
- Pinocchio's Workshop – closed. No reopening date available.

- Main Street Electrical Parade return engagement – nightly, through August 20.
- 2017 Grad Nites – May 5, 6, 10, 17, 19, 20, 24, 30, and 31; June 2, 3, 6, 7, 9, 10, 14, 16, and 17.
- D23 Expo – July 14–16. Tickets are now on sale through the official D23 website. Saturday-only tickets are sold out, but 3-day passes are still available, as are single-day tickets for for Friday and Sunday.
- CHOC Walk in the Park – Sunday, August 27. Registration is now open.
- Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend – August 31 through September 3. This event adds to the Labor Day weekend crowds. Registration is still open for some events via the runDisney website.
- Gay Days at Disneyland (unofficial event) – October 6–8. More information on the event website.
- Dapper Day Fall Outing to Disneyland (unofficial event) – Sunday, November 5. More information at the event website. This popular event grows larger each year, so it's worth making note of the date if you plan to visit the park during this weekend.
- Super Heroes Half Marathon Weekend – November 9–12. This event adds to the Veteran's Day weekend crowds. Registration is still open for some events via the runDisney website.
2018
- Star Wars – The Light Side Half Marathon Weekend – January 11–14, 2018. Registration has been delayed, and will open at a later, unspecified date.
- Dapper Day Spring Outing to Disneyland (unofficial event) – Sunday, April 22. More information at the event website. This popular event grows larger each year, so it's worth making note of the date if you plan to visit the park during this weekend.
- Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend – May 10-13, 2018. Registration was scheduled to open June 27, 2017, but may be delayed.
School Holidays
Notable school holidays that may impact park attendance. If you know of any other school holidays that should be listed here, please send us an e-mail (link).
2017
- Utah Education Association convention (UEA, a.k.a. "Utah Escapes to Anaheim") – October 19–20. Expect large attendance levels October 19–22 as Utah students and families take advantage of a 4-day weekend created by their school's participation in a state education convention. Not all Utah schools or teachers close for or attend UEA, but the impact on the Resort is usually noticeable enough to mention.
- Nevada Day – October 28. Nevada schools will be closed on Friday, October 28 to observe Nevada Day, creating a three-day weekend.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency.

Military |
2017 Military Salute Offer Disney released details of its 2017 Military Salute offer for Disneyland and Walt Disney World last October, and the tickets are valid January 1 through April 8 and April 24 through December 19, 2017. At the time we first shared details of the offer, we did not know about (or Disney had not announced) a special PhotoPass promotion also available to military personnel. Through December 19, 2017, active and retired U.S. military personnel who are eligible for the Military Salute offer can also purchase the Disney PhotoPass Collection for $49, a discount of 50% over the usual $99 price. The Disney PhotoPass Collection includes digital downloads of all available PhotoPass photos linked to your account, a voucher for a dining print package and a Disneyland Resort Gallery Disc with 350 high-resolution professional photos from around Disneyland Resort. Southern California CityPASS |
Southern California CityPASS ($346/$314) – includes a 3-Day Disneyland Resort Park Hopper Bonus Ticket (including one early-entry day), a one-day admission to Sea World San Diego, and a one-day admission to LEGOLAND California. The CityPASS expires 14 days after first use at any location, and the first use must occur by December 31, 2017. Purchase CityPASS through the Disneyland website or on-site at the ticket booths of Disneyland Resort or the other theme parks included in the pass. You can also purchase directly from the CityPASS website, though a shipping charge may apply depending on how quickly you need the ticket. When you purchase the CityPASS, you have the option of adding a one-day admission to either San Diego Zoo or San Diego Safari Park for an extra $42/$34. This upgraded pass is only available for purchase directly from the CityPASS website. You can also upgrade your CityPASS to add more days at participating locations:

Purchase with Purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced–price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location. Recently, Disney has begun allowing customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item. Current offers:
Landry's Select Club – members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days). This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club, and runs on a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 birthday reward. We recommend that you prepurchase your membership before your visit so you can take advantage of the priority seating benefit. ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link). The 3-Day So Cal Resident 1-Park Per Day ticket offers residents of Southern California and Northern Baja California admission to either Disneyland or Disney California Adventure on one day, and then a second visit to either park on another day on or before May 25, 2017. You can use both days of this ticket at the same theme park, or visit one park one day and the other park on the second day, but you cannot use it to enter both parks on the same day. The ticket is $149 for ages 3 and up. You can also upgrade this ticket to a 3-Day Park Hopper, which allows entry to both parks each day, for an additional $40, a savings of up to $106 compared to the box office price of a three-day park-hopper ticket. If purchased in advance of arrival, the three-day tickets include one Magic Morning admission. This benefit does not come with tickets purchased at the theme park ticket booths, so make sure to order online and print at home before you arrive. If purchasing at a participating third party ticket outlet, double-check that their 3-day tickets come with this feature. There is no "fuse" on this ticket, which means you can use the first admission today and wait until May to use the second (or third) admission. You must, however, purchase the ticket by May 22, 2017. Disney's Resort Magic and Good Neighbor Magic Packages – These package includes accommodations in one of the three resort hotels or at one of 40 Good Neighbor hotels, along with theme park admission. The packages also come with a variety of extra inclusions and bonuses, usually a souvenir pin and lanyard, and discount coupons for various Downtown Disney merchants. I am done listening to the haters whose only complaint was that the Tower theme is gone now. The feedback I am hearing about MB is good and people are excited to go over and over again. I can't wait until I get to go (whenever that happens to be).
The exterior looks like a garbage fire.
If they were going to go Marvel - it should have been "Captain America: Escape from Red Skull" - at least that fits closer to the area's decor..... just my .02
It is intriguing and it draws you to it. It does its job.
I had the displeasure of sitting near two people on one of my rides this weekend who were determined to hate it if it was at all remotely unlike the Tower of Terror ride. And they succeeded. Which is fine with me because then that will be two fewer people in line in front of me.
The question I got asked a lot and which I heard asked the most overall was "Is it better than Tower?" No, I don't think it's better than Tower. I think it's different than Tower. Though they essentially use the same mechanism, they give you a completely different ride experience. For me, it would be the same as asking me if Big Thunder RR is better or if Space Mountain is better. Both are coasters but the experiences are different. For me, neither is better and both have their strong points.
I will admit that the exterior is a bit jarring when you see it behind Carthay Circle, though it usually makes me think how boring Carthay Circle looks now. A few of us stood and watched the Fortress on Saturday night late in the evening, as different colors played over the exterior. It was gorgeous. We finally left because it had been a long day and we were tired. Other than the color scheme, the exterior actually reminds me a lot of how the Star Wars vehicles were built by the VFX folks using various parts of different model kits, which would make sense from what little I know of the Collector's background and making an amalgam of the various things he's encountered in his travels.
We had one friend who came with us through the queue but declined to actually ride, and he enjoyed the queue part as well. There's lots more that you can see from the stand-by queue that you can't from the Fastpass queue, but I don't think it's worth the 2 or 3 hour wait just to see those bits. I'd say go either first thing at opening to do it or wait a few months or a year when it's not as crazy. There is one specific part of the pre-show that amazes me every time I see it.
Its not my kind of ride so I have no cares what it is inside but the outside is not pleasant at all to look at. More so when the sun is hitting certain spots on it. So I have to watch where I am looking when I walk in a direction facing it, just as I had to do with the castle's 60th overlay or I will end up with a headache. BTW, my husband who is a big Marvel fan dropped us off one day after most the building was showing and even said it was ugly to look at. While my 15 yr old is eh about it and looking forward to riding it since he liked it before the change.
