Holiday Time at Disneyland
Disneyland's holiday hashtag this year is #HolidaysBeginHere, and the season began this weekend with crowds flocking to see all that is merry and bright at Disneyland and Disney California Adventure. For many, the specialness of Holiday Time has to do with the familiar traditions. There's a giant tree on Main Street, U.S.A., and Sleeping Beauty Castle is covered with glittering show. "it's a small world" Holiday is back, and the merchants of Main Street are stocked to the brim with holiday apparel, gifts and sweet treats.
Over at Disney California Adventure, another lovely tree graces Buena Vista Street, and Santa Claus is greeting children in the Redwood Creek Challenge Trail. Cars Land is decked out in holiday splendor, and the Festival of Holidays is serving up new and familiar dishes. This is not a year of major additions or changes to the seasonal celebration, but there are some new elements to explore.
At Disneyland, holiday accents on Sleeping Beauty Castle incorporate the new color scheme and painted accents that debuted after the castle was refurbished last year. "it's a small world" Holiday features new scents in several scenes, from cinnamon in South America to coconut in the South Seas room.
The new Disney Holiday Dance Party takes over Tomorrowland at night, with a live DJ playing a dance mix of holiday songs, and Disney characters on hand to party on the dance floor.
At Disney California Adventure, the newest addition is a character cavalcade called Mickey's Happy Holidays. Mickey and friends make their way down the parade route from Paradise Gardens Park to Carthay Circle, accompanied by the Holiday Toy Drummers. This is a short little procession, but catch it if you can, if only to see Mickey and friends in all-new holiday costumes.

2019 candy cane schedule
Disneyland candy canes were once one of those little Disney gems, known to only a small group of fans. Whether it's the deceptively simple recipe or just the charm of watching candy makers cook, pull, and shape the canes in front of you, people wait hours to get one fresh from the kitchen.
Candy makers work in a hot, humid room to produce up to three batches a day, guarding against stray grains of sugar that can cause a batch to crystallize and be ruined. Once cooled, the canes are sheathed in plastic and wrapped in bubble wrap, and sold to a crowd of eager customers.
Social media helped drive the candy cane craze, but it was a Food Network special that really made these scratch-made treats famous. Disney now issues wristbands at the candy location on candy cane days; plan to get there at park opening to snag one.
Each color-coded wristband corresponds to a batch. If you don't want to watch the candies being made, managers will tell you when to come back to claim your treat. In all cases, you must return by the time specified by the location, after which unclaimed candy canes are sold on a first-come, first-serve basis. No discounts apply, and there is a limit of one candy cane per person.
For 2019, these fresh candy canes are available just 22 days between Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. The official dates are:

Holiday specials taping this week at Disneyland
The Disneyland portions of two holiday specials will be filmed in the park this week, with the majority of the taping taking place Wednesday and Thursday, November 13 and 14.
The first special is ABC's The Wonderful World of Disney: Magical Holiday Celebration, scheduled to air Thursday, November 28. The Disneyland portion of the prime-time special is hosted by Jesse Palmer, and will include several musical performances taped in the park. If you happen to be visiting Disneyland on Wednesday or Thursday, you may see rock band The Man perform “Happy Christmas” and “Merry Christmas Everybody." Singers Ingrid Michaelson and Andy Grammer are also slated to record an all-new original holiday song.
The prime-time special will include a preview of Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance, which opens January 17, 2020, at Disneyland, following a December 5, 2019 opening at Walt Disney World.
Also taping this week are the Disneyland portions of the Disney Parks Magical Christmas Day Parade, which airs Wednesday, December 25. Visitors might catch a glimpse of Ingrid Michaelson and Grace VanderWaal recording “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree," or The Man performing “White Christmas” and “Feel it Still."
The cast of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series will also perform a medley from the new show. In addition to the musical numbers, the Christmas morning show will include a preview of the Avengers Campus coming to Disney California Adventure in 2020, and a look at Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway, which is just breaking ground behind Disneyland's Toontown.
We never advise making a special trip to see the tapings, but if you happen to be visiting Disneyland on Wednesday or Thursday, you'll certainly notice the production gear up around the park. The permits indicated that there will be stages at "it's a small world" and inside Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge, but Disney also says some performances will be taped in front of Sleeping Beauty Castle. Disney will run a "special presentation" of A Christmas Fantasy Parade at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday and Thursday on Main Street, U.S.A.
The prime viewing areas for these performances are usually filled with Disney employees and their friends and family, but sometimes a random park-goer can find themselves inside the white ropes, especially if they happen to be wearing Disney holiday clothing and accessories. You should also be prepared for a long wait in the hot California sun, as tapings are rarely a one-take deal.
A third holiday special is set to air on the Disney Channel on December 13, but all content for that show was taped at Walt Disney World or on the Disney Cruise Line.
Indiana Jones Adventure slated for refurbishment
Disneyland's Indiana Jones Adventure was closed for a brief refurbishment last week, and it looks like a longer closure may be in store for 2020.
According to permits filed with the city of Anaheim, Disney will remove and replace a "show set bridge" in the attraction, including the steel structure and surrounding rockwork and planks. The permit does not specify when the work is to begin.
Indiana Jones Adventure opened at Disneyland in 1995, and will commemorate its 25th anniversary on March 3, 2020. A version of the ride opened in 2001 at Tokyo Disney Sea. The last major refurbishment to the Disneyland version was in 2014.
Snow White to get facelift in 2020
Disneyland has also filed a permit to refurbish Snow White's Scary Adventures in Fantasyland. According to the permit, Disney will remove and replace props, sets, and scenes throughout the 6,200-square-foot attraction, and will "install new structural beams, rockwork and new projector platforms."
The addition of new projectors in the attraction hints that Disney may enhance the classic 1955 attraction with some of the same technological updated added to the Alice in Wonderland attraction in 2014, or to Peter Pan's Flight during a major refurbishment in 2015. Disney also added new projection and audio effects to the Matterhorn Bobsleds in 2015.
Running the numbers on the Sip & Savor pass
Disney California Adventure's Festival of Holidays is back for 2019, with over 60 different food and drink selections to choose from. Also back is the "Sip and Savor Pass," which provides eight tasting portions of select food and beverage items from eight participating Festival Marketplace stalls. All food items and non-alcoholic beverages from those stalls are included. The pass is $56, and $51 for passholders (a $2 increase from 2018).
The passport itself is a plastic credential with eight snap-off tabs, strung on a lanyard. Passholders get a collectible button and a different lanyard with an AP logo.
As always, you have to really pay attention to get the best value from this pass. The pass works out to $7.00 per tab. However, sales tax is not applied to the price of the lanyard, but is to the food items, so you also get an 8% advantage when you use the pass because you don't pay sales tax when you use them.
If you use all eight tabs to purchase one each of the eight most expensive items at the festival, at best passholders save $13.25 (plus tax) compared to paying cash. Non-passholders would save $8.25 (plus tax). However, every $5 dessert or $6 beverage you buy with a tab eats into that savings. Simply put: don't use a tab on anything that has a menu price under $7 and you'll come out even, if not slightly ahead.
Once again, our advice is to decide what dishes you're interested in trying, and then crunch the numbers to decide if this is a good deal for you. To get the most value from the pass, you need to be prepared to pay for under-$7 items separately, which will raise your overall spending.
The Sip and Savor Pass is valid for the entire festival, so you can use it to try new dishes throughout the event. However, passholders should be sure to pay attention to the block out dates on your pass, so you use up all of the tabs before your holiday blockout period begins.
This and That...
...Today, November 12, is launch day for Disney +, and Disneyland resort visitors who have not already signed up for the new streaming service can learn more about the product at a pop-up Disney+ location in Downtown Disney. The kiosk will be located near the Disney Home store.
...Disney has completed work on a section of the Tomorrowland entrance, and removed the work walls to reveal the new path from Tomorrowland to the Central Plaza. Most of the remaining walls should be down by the time the park opens Tuesday morning. Disney will complete the rest of the Tomorrowland entrance project after the holiday season.
...Disneyland will offer a sneak peek at the new High School Musical: The Musical: The Series starting Tuesday, November 12 in the Tomorrowland Theater. The 10-episode scripted show is available to stream on Disney+. Given that the cast of the show is already confirmed to be heading to the Disneyland Resort this week to film their portion of the Disney Parks Magical Christmas Day Parade special, there's a good chance one or more of the stars may pop in to surprise a sneak peek audience.
...The Grand Californian Gingerbread house is under construction in the hotel's lobby, and visitors can meet with a member of the bakery team on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 3:00 to 3:30 p.m.
...Tarzan's Treehouse was closed after a board on the suspended bridge at the attraction's entrance broke Sunday night. Workers repaired the board and the attraction reopened by Monday morning.
...Walt Disney Imagineering has launched their first official external website, with sections about what the division does, and how to apply for internships and careers within Imagineering.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Purchase with purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced-price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location.

2020 Ticket discounts

Military discounts are valid for stays most nights from January 1 through December 19, 2020. You can book now through December 19, 2020, and travel must be completed by December 20, 2020.
Disney does not publish the actual discounted rates, and instead asks eligible U.S. military personnel to call (714) 520-7088 to check pricing, availability and to make reservations. In past years, the offer was generally 30% to 40% off, based on room category.
Unlike the Walt Disney World version, the Disneyland offer allows the eligible service member to book up to two rooms, and allows their spouse (with valid and proper ID) to qualify in the absence of the service member.
Photopass Discount
Eligible service members can purchase the Photopass Collection for $49 plus tax through December 21, 2019. The package includes digital downloads of all PhotoPass photos in the user's account when they redeem the voucher; a voucher for a dining print package, and a Disneyland photo disc with 350 stock photos from around the Disneyland Resort.

Here are some other details you should know about regarding the offers:
- Disney Military Promotional Tickets may be purchased at participating U.S. military sales outlets ONLY by Eligible Service Members (defined below) or their spouses (but not both), for use by themselves and other family members and friends, as provided herein. These Tickets may not be otherwise transferred, distributed or resold.
- Eligible Service Members are active or retired members of the U.S. military, including the National Guard, Reservists, the U.S. Coast Guard, the Commissioned Corps of the Public Health Service (PHS), and the Commissioned Corps of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
- The actual prices charged at the individual U.S. military base ticket offices for Disney Military Promotional Tickets may be less than the prices set forth above.
- Participating military sales outlets must require that Eligible Service Members (or their spouses) present valid military identification to purchase Disney Military Promotional Tickets.
- Disney 3-Day or 4-Day Military Promotional Tickets for admission to the Disneyland Resort expire and may not be used after December 18, 2020. Valid military identification will be required for purchase and use.
- No more than six (6) Disney Military Promotional Tickets may be purchased and (if applicable) activated by any Eligible Service Member or spouse (regardless of the place of purchase and whether purchased by that person or that person’s spouse). In addition, one of the six (6) tickets purchased must be used by the Eligible Service Member or his/her spouse.
- Each Disney Military Promotional Ticket must be used by the same person on any and all days.
- The Photopass Collection can be purchased only in person at Kingswell Camera Shop in Disney California Adventure, or at Main Street Photo Supply in Disneyland.

Costco Travel Packages – many different travel packages including visits to Disneyland and Disneyland hotels are available through Costco.
Disney's Resort Magic and Good Neighbor Magic Packages – these package includes accommodations in one of the three resort hotels or at one of 40 Good Neighbor hotels, along with theme park admission. The packages also come with a variety of extra inclusions and bonuses, usually a souvenir pin and lanyard, and discount coupons for various Downtown Disney merchants.
