Heat, humidity and red flags at the Disneyland Half Marathon weekend
The only record set at this weekend's Disneyland Half Marathon event was for heat, as temperatures soared above 90 degrees during Sunday's run. The half marathon also marked the first time that runDisney put a "red flag" advisory on a West Coast event, which Disney defines as:
"Potentially dangerous conditions. Heat injury is possible. All participants urged to slow their pace and hydrate adequately."
The red flag was posted around 8:00 a.m. Sunday morning, while thousands of runners and walkers were still on the course. According to reports from multiple participants, after posting the red flag advisory, runDisney also shortened the half marathon course to allow participants to return to the finish line more quickly.
Friday's 5K event and Saturday's 10K event enjoyed only slightly cooler conditions, with temperatures at the finish of both events hovering in the mid-80s. Normally this space would include the winning times from the weekend's races, but truly everyone who crossed the finish line deserves a mention.
Results for all races and divisions are available on the runDisney website for those who want to see how they did in the extreme conditions. According to Disney, 8,198 runners completed the 10K, and 8,710 completed the half marathon. Over 3,900 people completed both events, and earned the Disneyland Double Dare Challenge. Both events had significantly fewer finishers than the 2016 events, which was due to both a reduction in event capacity on Disney's part, and high "did not start" and "did not finish" counts, likely due to the weather.

The next runDisney weekend in Anaheim is the Super Heroes Half Marathon Weekend, November 9 to 12. That event includes the Spider-Man 5K, Thor 10K, runDisney Kids Races, the Super Heroes Half Marathon, and the Infinity Gauntlet Challenge. Some events are sold out, but registration is still open for the half marathon, and Challenge through the runDisney website.

As a reminder, runDisney race photos are now taken by Disney PhotoPass cast members and are available through that program after the event. If you are an annual passholder with a pass that qualifies you for free PhotoPass photos, that means yours are now free. You can add the photos to your PhotoPass account by entering various race codes that include your race bib number as part of the code.
To add them via the iPhone My Disney Experience app:
- From the list icon on the top left, select PhotoPass to go to the Disney PhotoPass page.
- Select Link Photos to go to the My Disney PhotoPass code page.
- Select Scan to Link Your Photos to go to the Link Your Photos page.
- Select Enter a PhotoPass ID. In the field labeled "Enter the ID number," enter the following for the appropriate races, replacing X-XXXX with your own bib number:
- Half – 2017-LAND-HLFX-XXXX. Disneyland Half Marathon bib number of "12345" would enter 2017-LAND-HLF1-2345.
- 10K – 2017-LAND-10KX-XXXX
- 5K – 2017-LAND-D5KX-XXXX
- KIDS RACES – 2017-LAND-KIDX-XXXX
- A Disneyland Half Marathon bib number of "3333" would enter 2017-LAND-HLF0-3333.
- A 5K bib number of "678" would enter 2017-LAND-D5K0-0678.

Suspected serial bib thief apprehended at Disneyland event
Back in May, the website Marathon Investigation reported that someone had stolen a bib for the Tinker Bell 10K and half marathon by passing themselves off as the registered runner and claiming the bib at the race expo. Shelly, the legitimate owner of the bib, shared her tale on running-focused social media groups, and the story spread throughout the Disney running community.
PhotoPass photos taken during the event clearly showed someone other than Shelly running with that number, and it wasn't long before other runners identified the suspected thief as "Patty," nicknamed "Patty Pan" for the costume she wore during the event. Marathon Investigation reported that the bib wearer, Patricia, had posted photos from quite a few races for which she was apparently not registered, including at least one previous runDisney event. Shortly after the Tinker Bell event, the suspected thief deleted her social media profiles.
Fast-forward to this past Thursday, when MousePlanet reader Melissa Martin Mayorgas posted on Facebook that someone had forged her name on a race waiver and claimed her bib for the Disneyland 5K. Mayorgas is not just another runDisney enthusiast, she is co-founder and captain of Team Muscle Makers for Ullrich Congenital Muscular Dystrophy, a runDisney partner charity. Team Muscle Makers has fielded teams in both Disneyland and Disney World events, and is well-known in the Disney running community. Mayorgas said that runDisney replaced the stolen charity bib as soon as they were notified, and she was able to run the 5K event with her family and team as planned, in her first of three events over the weekend.
A few people jokingly wondered if Patty Pan was involved, but the kidding ended when photos taken during the 5K revealed that it was in fact the same runner in both cases. It also turned out the woman had registered under her own name for the 10K and half marathon events. Seconds after she crossed the finish line of Saturday's 10K event, Patty Pan was detained by officers from the Anaheim Police Pepartment and Disney security. Video from the finish line was posted on the Marathon Investigation website.
San Diego 10 News reports the woman was not charged Saturday, but quotes Anaheim Police public information officer Daron Wyatt as saying there is an ongoing investigation into the situation. 10 News also reported that the woman was cited for improper use of a handicap placard. Citing the ongoing investigation, Mayorgas was unable to further comment on the situation.
Unfortunately, runDisney's own procedures make this type of fraud pretty simple. All that is needed to generate a waiver for a particular event is the first name, last name, and date of birth of the registered runner—information that is all too easy to obtain from social media. Every runner who shares publicly that they have registered for a specific runDisney event opens themselves to being targeted in this manner. In both cases where Patty is suspected of stealing a runDisney bib, the legitimate owner of that bib was active in Disney-related running groups.
Race expo staff are supposed to check photo identification before issuing a bib, but in reality, that practice is rather hit-or-miss. I have picked up bibs for other people who do not share my last name at several events over the past three years, and was either not asked for photo ID, or not challenged as to why my name did not match the name on the bibs. This suspected thief clearly found a loophole and exploited it. It remains to be seen how or if Disney tightens security to prevent this at future events.
The Fall "slow season" is here
Labor Day marks the start of a brief fall slow season at the Disneyland Resort, those warm days between the end of Summer and the start of Halloween Time. This week also brings added refurbishments:
- Soarin' Around the World – closed September 5–6 for refurbishment.
- Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue! – closed September 5–21 for refurbishment.
- River Belle Terrace – closed September 5 for refurbishment. Reopening date not published, but expected to be November 16.
Grizzly River Run closed this weekend for an unscheduled refurbishment. The Disneyland website currently shows the ride closed September 5 only, so the actual duration of this closure is not known.
This is the final week of the Summer of Heroes marketing promotion at Disney California Adventure, though the Guardians of the Galaxy: Awesome Dance Off! show is scheduled at least through October. The World of Color show continues nightly performances.
Over at Disneyland, Fantasmic and the Remember... fireworks show are now on a Friday-to-Sunday schedule, plus holidays. The two shows do not perform on Halloween party nights.
Mickey's Soundsational Parade performs daily at Disneyland, with two daily performances on weekends. At this time, there is no daytime parade at Disney California Adventure, and no nighttime parade in either park, with the exception of the event-exclusive Halloween parade in Disneyland.
Haul-O-Ween materializes at Disney California Adventure
The residents of Radiator Screams are getting ready for their first-ever Haul-O-Ween event, and decorations are quickly appearing throughout Cars Land. Halloween Time officially begins on Friday, September 15, but here are some photos of the work in progress.

More Halloween Party nights sell out
As we get closer to the start of Halloween Time, more of the after-hours Mickey's Halloween Party events have sold out. As of this writing, all of the Friday night events except September 22 are sold out, leaving only weeknight events. The status of each event is as follows:
- Sold out – September 27 and 29; October 6, 13, 20 and 27
- Available – September 20, 22, and 25; October 3, 10, 17, 24, and 31.
Tickets are available via Disneyland.com, at Disneyland ticket booths, or by calling (714) 781-4636.
All event nights are expected to sell out by the end of September if not earlier, and we expect the three remaining September nights to sell out this week. If you waited too long and are now scrambling to obtain tickets for your preferred event night, there is hope. Before you turn to Craigslist, StubHub, or eBay (all of which bring with them the very high risk of being defrauded), here are official ways you may still be able to buy legitimate party tickets directly from Disney:
- Call Disneyland and order tickets by phone – a limited number of tickets may be available by phone for events that are sold out online. Call (714) 781-4636 to purchase by phone. Expect to wait on hold for at least 10 minutes.
- Visit Disneyland and purchase tickets in person – a limited number of tickets may be available at the Disneyland ticket booths for events that are sold out online. However, if you tried to purchase tickets by phone and the night you wanted was sold out, they will not be available at the ticket booths.
- Disneyland Resort Hotels – if you are a guest staying at one of the three Disney-owned hotels (Disneyland Hotel, Paradise Pier Hotel, or Grand Californian Hotel), check with your hotel desk the morning of the event to see if they have tickets available for purchase. Last year, MousePlanet Community Leader Angela told us that a small number of tickets were reserved for Disneyland Resort Hotel guests, and were released for sale at 5:30 a.m. the morning of each party. Officially these tickets are intended only for concierge-level guests, but we've heard conflicting stories about that, and it seems some guests in standard rooms have been allowed to buy the tickets as well. If you're already staying on property, it does not hurt to ask. Angela warns that these tickets sell out very quickly, so don't wait until the party starts to try to make your purchase.
- Friends or family – if friends/family already have tickets, they may be able to purchase additional tickets the day of the party. Again, a small number of tickets are reserved for same-day sales to help accommodate ticket holders who may have miscounted how many they need, or who had friends/family unexpectedly join them. As with the tickets reserved for hotel guests, these are very limited, and go on sale as soon as the ticket booths open in the morning. If at all possible, get there first thing in the morning to increase your chance of getting tickets. You must have the other event tickets with you—the cast member needs to see them, and cannot just trust your word that "so-and-so already has tickets."
Grad Nite 2018
Tickets for the 2018 Disneyland Resort Grad Nite at Disney California Adventure Park events go on sale to school groups on September 13, and we now have the dates and details for the 2018 season so readers can plan trips accordingly.
There are 18 Grad Nite events scheduled for 2018 in May and June:
- May 4, 5, 11, 12, 15, 16, 18, 19, 22, 23, 29 and 30.
- June 1, 2, 5, 6, 8 and 9.
Vacation planners should note that the Grad Nite private party starts an hour earlier in 2018, and now runs from 9:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. DCA will close to "day guests" by 9:00 p.m. on event nights.
For 2018, Disney will offer three ticket packages, including one that is a move back to the traditional graduation evening event, instead of the all-day celebration Disney has pushed since 2012.

Option 1 provides admission to Disney California Adventure starting at 8:00 p.m. on the event night, and includes admission to the after-hours Grad Nite private party in Disney California Adventure from 9:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. after that park closes to "day guests." This ticket is $79 per student, a savings from the $92 ticket offered in 2017. This option is likely to be popular with local schools who want to attend Disney's Grad Nite on the actual evening of their graduation, after the ceremony. |

Option 2 runs $99 per student, and includes access to Disney California Adventure during regular operating hours on the event day, plus access to the after-hours party. This ticket is $7 more than the 2017 offering, but does not include park-hopper benefits. |

Option 3 provides park-hopper access to both Disneyland and Disney California Adventure parks during regular operating hours, and a private Grad Nite party in Disney California Adventure starting at 9:00 p.m. This ticket is now $139 per student, a whopping 50% increase from 2017. |
Schools that book Options 2 or 3 can still choose to arrive whenever they wish during their Grad Nite event. Some arrive right at park opening to maximize their time, while others arrive later due to travel time or other activities. Based on reports since the event switched to this format, the parks grow increasingly crowded as the day goes on and more students arrive. Grad Nites are often a good excuse to leave the theme parks early to take in a movie and a nice dinner in Downtown Disney.
Of course, Grad Nites are not the only times that the Disneyland Resort is crowded with student groups. The last weeks of school are popular times for class trips, something that Disney actively encourages through special pricing and activities for school groups. Those visits won't appear on any calendar, but are a fact of Disney life during this season.
With so many schools on year-round calendars now, you should consider the period between March and mid-June as one big, hazy spring-break-into-graduation season. So while the Grad Nite calendar can give you an idea of when the most high school seniors will be on property, there is no way to know when a school district from central California is sending its 9th graders for their own promotion celebration.

- Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend – Originally scheduled for May 10–13, 2018, but runDisney has since removed the date from the 2018 event listing. Registration dates and details pending.
- 2018 Grad Nites: May 4, 5, 11, 12, 15, 16, 18, 19, 22, 23, 29 and 30; June 1, 2, 5, 6, 8 and 9.
School Holidays
Notable school holidays that may impact park attendance. If you know of any other school holidays that should be listed here, please send us an e-mail (link).
2017
- Utah Education Association convention (UEA, a.k.a. "Utah Escapes to Anaheim") – October 19–20. Expect large attendance levels October 19–22 as Utah students and families take advantage of a 4-day weekend created by their school's participation in a state education convention. Not all Utah schools or teachers close for or attend UEA, but the impact on the Resort is usually noticeable enough to mention.
- Nevada Day – October 28. Nevada schools are closed on Friday, October 28 to observe Nevada Day, creating a three-day weekend.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency.

2017 Military Salute Offer Disney released details of its 2017 Military Salute offer for Disneyland and Walt Disney World last October, and the tickets are valid January 1 through April 8 and April 24 through December 19, 2017. At the time we first shared details of the offer, we did not know about (or Disney had not announced) a special PhotoPass promotion also available to military personnel. Through December 19, 2017, active and retired U.S. military personnel who are eligible for the Military Salute offer can also purchase the Disney PhotoPass Collection for $49, a discount of 50% over the usual $99 price. The Disney PhotoPass Collection includes digital downloads of all available PhotoPass photos linked to your account, a voucher for a dining print package and a Disneyland Resort Gallery Disc with 350 high-resolution professional photos from around Disneyland Resort. Southern California CityPASS |
Southern California CityPASS ($346/$314) – includes a 3-Day Disneyland Resort Park Hopper Bonus Ticket (including one early-entry day), a one-day admission to Sea World San Diego, and a one-day admission to LEGOLAND California. The CityPASS expires 14 days after first use at any location, and the first use must occur by December 31, 2017. Purchase CityPASS through the Disneyland website or on-site at the ticket booths of Disneyland Resort or the other theme parks included in the pass. You can also purchase directly from the CityPASS website, though a shipping charge may apply depending on how quickly you need the ticket. When you purchase the CityPASS, you have the option of adding a one-day admission to either San Diego Zoo or San Diego Safari Park for an extra $42/$34. This upgraded pass is only available for purchase directly from the CityPASS website. You can also upgrade your CityPASS to add more days at participating locations:

Purchase with Purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced–price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location. Recently, Disney has begun allowing customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item. Current offers:
Landry's Select Club – members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days). This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club, and runs on a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 birthday reward. We recommend that you prepurchase your membership before your visit so you can take advantage of the priority seating benefit. ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link). The 3-Day So Cal Resident 1-Park Per Day ticket offers residents of Southern California and Northern Baja California admission to either Disneyland or Disney California Adventure on one day, and then a second visit to either park on another day on or before May 25, 2017. You can use both days of this ticket at the same theme park, or visit one park one day and the other park on the second day, but you cannot use it to enter both parks on the same day. The ticket is $149 for ages 3 and up. You can also upgrade this ticket to a 3-Day Park Hopper, which allows entry to both parks each day, for an additional $40, a savings of up to $106 compared to the box office price of a three-day park-hopper ticket. If purchased in advance of arrival, the three-day tickets include one Magic Morning admission. This benefit does not come with tickets purchased at the theme park ticket booths, so make sure to order online and print at home before you arrive. If purchasing at a participating third party ticket outlet, double-check that their 3-day tickets come with this feature. There is no "fuse" on this ticket, which means you can use the first admission today and wait until May to use the second (or third) admission. You must, however, purchase the ticket by May 22, 2017. Costco Travel Packages – many different travel packages including visits to Disneyland and Disneyland hotels are available through Costco. Disney's Resort Magic and Good Neighbor Magic Packages – These package includes accommodations in one of the three resort hotels or at one of 40 Good Neighbor hotels, along with theme park admission. The packages also come with a variety of extra inclusions and bonuses, usually a souvenir pin and lanyard, and discount coupons for various Downtown Disney merchants. The first red flag warning for the Disneyland Half Marathon was in 2007, not this past weekend. That was the second event, and it was the only time they have run the half marathon on Monday. Monday, September 3, 2007, was significantly hotter than Sunday, September 3, 2017. Temperature data for Santa Ana shows 9-3-2007 reached 99 degrees where 2017 was 92; for Fullerton, 9-3-2007 reached 108 degreed where 2017 was 96. The red flag warning was declared just before the half began, with the caution that if a black flag were announced, the race would immediately be cancelled and busses would be sent out to retrieve participants. It was scorching. 9760 participants had recorded finishing times--I managed to finish in the top half, although considerably slower than I anticipated. It was scorching!
Note: the temp data I list was pulled from weatherunderground.com. Both Santa Ana and Fullerton came up in searches for Anaheim historic weather data. Almanac.com gives 2007 for Anaheim using SNA but 2017 using a station in Fullerton and gives 99 (2007) and 97 (2017). So there's some apples-to-oranges issues. In any event, I was present for the red flag announcement in 2007, so I know that it occurred.
