Halloween Time at DCA

Halloween Time has officially begun at the Disneyland Resort, though park decorators will likely be adding more decor in the coming weeks. As expected, the return of the popular Halloween Screams fireworks and the end of summer blockouts brought lots of annual passholders for the opening night of Halloween Time. Both the Mickey & Friends and Pixar Pals parking structures reached capacity for a time Friday night, but the Toy Story parking lot remained open. At no point this weekend did the resort run out of parking.

For many fans, the best part of Halloween Time is just enjoying the fall decor—so let's take a stroll through Disney California Adventure.

The Redwood Creek Challenge Trail in Disney California Adventure is currently closed, as the space is being transformed into a treat trail for use during the Oogie Boogie Bash. From the outside, visitors can see some of the decorations that have already been installed, including dozens of candelabra and lots of small light fixtures disguised as bird nests and woven baskets.

Halloween treats –  churros for days, and so much popcorn

By our count, Disney chefs created well over 100 different snacks, drinks, entrées, and sweet treats for the 2019 Halloween Time promotion, including 11 different takes on churros, and a dozen cake varieties. Loaded fries come in potato, sweet potato or funnel cake varieties, and ice cream is available in everything from a classic sundae to a spiked hard apple float.

Fortunately Disney detailed many of these treats in the Foodie Guide to Halloween Time, so you can start planning your culinary adventures. In addition to that useful guide, we have details of the Halloween collectibles, which are always popular with Disneyland fans.

The poison apple mug is available in purple for 2019. You can purchase it at various locations around Disneyland and Disney California Adventure, filled with everything from frozen drinks to fresh fruit. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.

The Oogie Boogie popcorn bucket is sold only in New Orleans Square, and costs $18. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.

Annual passholders can purchase this cauldron popcorn bucket for $20, and receive $1.50 popcorn refills through October 31, 2019. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.

Jack and the Haunted Mansion 50th anniversary

Jack Skellington is back for the 19th year of the Haunted Mansion Holiday. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.

Even as Disneyland celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Haunted Mansion attraction, the annual Haunted Mansion Holiday is back for its 19th season. To commemorate the anniversary, the gingerbread house at the centerpiece of the ballroom scene is a stylized re-creation of the Haunted Mansion itself. The display is populated with gingerbread cookie characters decorated as the most iconic residents of the mansion, some of whom appear and disappear exactly as their dancing counterparts do.

Oogie Boogie Bash nearly sold out

Seven additional nights of the new Oogie Boogie Bash event sold out in the last week, leaving only two event nights still available. Here's the current status as of publication:

  • Available – October 20, 29.
  • Sold out – September 17, 19, 22, 24, 26, 29; October 1, 3, 6, 8, 10, 13, 15, 17, 22, 24, 27, 31

As a reminder, all nights for last year's Halloween Party event nights sold out by September 25. They won't last that long this year.

The after-hours event debuts at Disney California Adventure this year, replacing the popular Mickey's Halloween Party at Disneyland. The party takes place on 20 nights in September and October, and requires a separate event ticket to attend. Oogie Boogie Bash includes trick-or-treat stations, themed entertainment, the debut of the Frightfully Fun Parade and Ride of the Headless Horseman at Disney California Adventure, plus an all-new Halloween edition of the World of Color show.

Tickets for the two remaining events are $145 per person. You can buy tickets from the Disneyland website, by calling (714) 781-4636, or in person at a Disneyland Resort ticket booth.

But what happens if you had your heart (and vacation plans) set on attending a specific, sold-out night? Before you turn to Craigslist, StubHub, or eBay (all of which bring with them the very high risk of being defrauded), here are official ways you may still be able to buy legitimate party tickets directly from Disney:

  • Call the Disneyland Resort and order tickets by phone – a limited number of tickets may be available by phone for events that are sold out on line. Call (714) 781-4636 to purchase by phone. Expect to wait on hold for at least 10 minutes.
  • Visit Disneyland and purchase tickets in person – a limited number of tickets may be available at the Disneyland ticket booths for events that are sold out on line. However, if you tried to purchase tickets by phone and the night you wanted was sold out, they will not be available at the ticket booths.
  • Disneyland Resort Hotels – if you are a guest staying at one of the three Disney-owned hotels (Disneyland Hotel, Paradise Pier Hotel, or Grand Californian Hotel), check with your hotel desk the morning of the event to see if they have tickets available for purchase. In past years, a small number of tickets were reserved for Disneyland Resort Hotel guests, and were released for sale at 5:30 a.m. the morning of each party. Officially, these tickets are intended only for concierge-level guests, but we've heard conflicting stories about that, and it seems some guests in standard rooms have been allowed to buy the tickets as well. If you're already staying on property, it doesn't hurt to ask. These tickets sell out very quickly, so don't wait until the party starts to try to make your purchase.
  • Friends or family – if friends/family already have tickets, they may be able to purchase additional tickets the day of the party. Again, a small number of tickets are reserved for same-day sales to help accommodate ticket holders who may have miscounted how many they need, or who had friends/family unexpectedly join them. As with the tickets reserved for hotel guests, these are very limited, and go on sale as soon as the ticket booths open in the morning. If at all possible, get there first thing in the morning to increase your chance of getting tickets. You must have the other event tickets with you the cast member needs to see them, and cannot just trust your word that "so-and-so already has tickets."

This and That...

...Disney announced last week that Chef Hung Hyunh, winner of Top Chef season 3, will open a new eatery in Downtown Disney this winter. Asian Street Eats will be operated by Earl Enterprises restaurant group, of Earl of Sandwich fame. Disney describes Asian Street Eats as a "take-out window," and says it will be located on the west end of Downtown Disney.

...This is the final week to catch the Laughing Stock company in Frontierland at Disneyland, and the Pixharmonic Orchestra in Pixar Pier at Disney California Adventure. Both groups received their end-of-run notices, and have no shows scheduled after September 14, 2019.

...The Sailing Ship Columbia is closed for refurbishment September 8–12.

...The Mandara Spa at Disney's Grand Californian Hotel closed on July 10. Disney says they are "reimagining" the space for a new experience, but has provided no additional details. Permits filed by Disney reference an expansion of the spa and adjacent restroom complex.

The spa was not operated by Disney, but by a third-party management company. Mandara Spa also operates the spa at the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin, and Mandara's parent company operates the Senses spas on the four Disney Cruise Line ships.

  • Gay Days at Disneyland (unofficial event) – October 4–6. More information on the event website.
  • Dapper Day Fall Outing (unofficial event) – November 3. More information on the event website.
  • Holidays at the Disneyland Resort – November 8 through January 6, 2020.
2020
  • Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance – opens Friday, January 17, 2020.
  • Dapper Day Spring Outing (unofficial event) – Sunday, April 19. More information on the event website.
  • Grad Nites – May 8, 9, 15, 16, 20, 26, 27, 29, and 30; June 2, 3, 5, 6, 10, 12, and 13

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

Current Discounts and Promotions

Disneyland prices as of January 6, 2019.

Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.

Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency like MousePlanet travel partner Get Away Today.

Everyone

Purchase with purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced-price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location.

Disney usually allows customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item.

Character dining vouchers – Disneyland is no longer offering tickets or vouchers to be pre-purchased for Character Dining. You may still make reservations 60 days in advance with payment due at the restaurant.

Visit our Annual Passholders Blockout Dates page to see more dates. You can see future calendar schedules at Disneyland. As always, specifics are subject to change without notice (or occasionally, without us noticing) so when information conflicts between what is presented here and that presented by Disney, it is best to assume Disney's information is correct.

Visit the Park Hours section of our Disneyland Park guide for additional details about Magic Morning and Toontown Morning Madness, including available attractions. Entertainment schedule: Go directly to the Disneyland Resort schedule for this week at Disneyland.com here.

The Seasons calendar is published on the Disneyland website for the next eight to 11 months.

  1. By Berry Princess

We went Friday night and didn't think it was that bad. We had no issues getting into Mickey and Friends. That was around 7pm though. Ended up on Donald with a lot of parking spots open from what we saw. The lines for most the rides were shorter then I would have expected for the first day of Halloween in the parks too. We had little waits for what we did and only used FP for Space Mtn.
