Take Mark's March of Dimes Challenge!

On April 29, Mark will be spending his birthday walking to raise money for the March of Dimes. MousePlanet readers and MouseStation listeners have helped Mark to raise about $20,000 for the worthy charity over the last six years. This year, his goal is to raise another $4,000. This month, he has issued a special challenge: Mark will match, dollar-for-dollar, every donation that comes in by April 10 from any MouseStation listener or MousePlanet reader. If it's in by April 10 (and perhaps past that), he'll match it.

You can also walk with Mark, either in person or virtually, by joining Team MousePlanet and getting your friends and family to contribute! The Kid is also raising money this year. You can go to Mark's fundraising page to sponsor him, The Kid's fundraising page to sponsor him, or the Team MousePlanet page to join in and walk yourself! Help us to provide a better chance to prevent prematurity and to help those babies that are born prematurely!

Feature: Karl Holz, Joe Lanzisero, and Bob Zalk on the Disney Fantasy

We missed a planned show for two weeks ago due to the Disney Fantasy media preview, some technical issues, and a couple of family illnesses. We're back now, though, and we've got some great cruise-related audio for you, today and on the next show.

Mark shared three interviews from the media preview cruise aboard the Disney Fantasy:

Karl Holz, President of Disney Cruise Line and New Vacation Operations

Mark asked Karl about what's upcoming for Disney Cruise Line now that the Disney Fantasy is finally sailing. Karl talked about the three itineraries this summer from New York City, as well as the fall and winter sailings from Galveston and winter sailings from Miami. He also talked about going back to Europe in 2013.

Conversation then turned to modifications made to the Fantasy as opposed to the Disney Dream to prepare for the longer itineraries. Karl mentioned the AquaLab wet play area, the Animation Magic dinner show, the Muppets interactive adventure game, the Europa nightclub district. Karl also shared his thoughts on his first Alaska cruise and his pleasure at having his family aboard the ship.

Joe Lanzisero, Senior Vice President of Creative for Walt Disney Imagineering

Mark asked Joe about moving up from a team member for the design of the Disney Magic and Disney Wonder to the project lead on the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy. They discussed the need to be able to see the whole project at the 30,000-foot-level and still dive down into the little details and other issues of project management, especially as related to Imagineering.

The discussion turned to some of the technology aboard the ship and some of the improvements since the Dream, including the technology work behind the Animation Magic show and the shrinking of the technology. They also talked about some of the story behind the creation of the AquaLab, Joe's most personally meaningful feature aboard the ship, and some of Joe's history as an animator.

Bob Zalk, Show Producer and Director for Walt Disney Imagineering

Bob shared his thoughts that the biggest technical leap between the Dream and the Fantasy was the technology behind the Animation Magic show, and discussed in depth some of the work that went into creating the show. He also discussed how the Muppets interactive adventure game came together.

Bob also discussed some of the emotions in play for him aboard the ship, and noted that—as with the Dream—the Goofy Golf is still the ship's most emotionally meaningful feature to him due to his memories of playing mini golf with his father.

Listen to the interview that we did with Bob last year aboard the Disney Dream's Christening Voyage.

Listener Feedback

Justin in Los Angeles wrote in to say that he skipped the report from the Michelle Obama/Let's Move/Disney's Magic Healthy Living event because he prefers to listen to our conversation more than the events themselves.

On the other end of the spectrum (and a ways up the coast), Dave in San Francisco posted on MousePlanet's Facebook page that he enjoyed the Obama story and enjoys hearing anything related to Disney. He also commented on our show about helping first-timers plan their Disney trips and gave us kudos for how we handled the negative listener feedback.

Sharla Manglass wrote in to address our questions on her voicemail about whether they used the nursery on board the Disney Dream and Mike's comment about Sharla and Lou naming their child Nora.

Mary Tesch wrote in to wish us a belated happy anniversary, and to comment on the show about helping first-timers plan their trips.
