Walt Disney World Resort Update for February 12-18, 2019

Writer's note: Before we get to our usual round up of News and Views, I pause for a moment of respect.

The Walt Disney Company and The Walt Disney Family Museum noted the February 9 death of Ron W. Miller, Walt Disney's son-in-law and the husband of Diane Disney. The former USC football star who married Walt's daughter Diane and played for the L.A. Rams, first came to work at Walt Disney Studios in 1957 and served as an assistant on the movie Old Yeller. In 1978, he rose to the rank of president of the company and became its CEO in 1983.

Miller is often described as a driving force at the company behind the building of EPCOT Center at Walt Disney World Resort, and the creation of Touchstone Pictures, Walt Disney Home Video, and The Disney Channel. He also pushed technological innovation at the company, including pursuing computer animation and, in particular, the film Tron. In 1984, he departed the company in the wake of the hostile takeover bid led by Saul Steinberg that the Disney board of directors fought and eventually chose to install Michael Eisner and Frank Wells in their leadership positions.

"Everyone at The Walt Disney Company is deeply saddened by the passing of Ron Miller," said Bob Iger, chairman and chief executive officer, The Walt Disney Company. "His life and legacy are inextricably linked with our Company and the Disney family because he was such a vital part of both, as our CEO and Walt's son-in-law. Few people had Ron's understanding of our history, or a deeper appreciation and respect for our Company, and he shared it generously with anyone who wanted to know more. I was fortunate to have known him, and even luckier to have called him a friend. My thoughts and prayers are with his family."

Miller also served on the Board of Directors at The Walt Disney Family Museum since its opening in 2009 and became its president in November 2013. He, Diane, and Diane's mother, Lillian, also established Silverado Vineyards in 1981. He passed away in Napa, California. He was 85.

Kevin Has Arrived at Disney's Animal Kingdom

In January, Disney announced that Kevin from Disney-Pixar's Up! would be "migrating north from Paradise Falls" to Disney's Animal Kingdom. As of yesterday, she has begun making appearances. Disney Parks Blog reported that "she's been spotted on the park's Discovery Island!." Several social media reports showed her in the vicinity of the Discovery Island stage where the Hakuna Matata Time Dance Party takes place..

For those that want to take home a plush version of Kevin, Disney Parks Blog also announced that a new toy will be available "at select merchandise locations in Disney's Animal Kingdom, such as Island Mercantile and Discovery Trading Co." starting later this month.

Mariachi Cobre to Tell the Story of Coco

When the 26th annual Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival gets underway on March 6, Mariachi Cobre at Epcot's Mexico pavilion will add new shows inspired by the Disney-Pixar film Coco in addition to their performances featuring traditional mariachi music. The group that has performed at Epcot since it opened (and that includes members that have performed at Walt Disney World since Magic Kingdom's opening in 1971 and at Disneyland even before that), will be joined by a pair of Folklórico dancers in telling Miguel Rivera's journey to find his familia. The new shows will include music from the film and Miguel will appear in the form of a "whimsical, hand-crafted puppet."

It is not yet clear whether the new Coco-themed shows will be separately listed on times guides or whether they will be incorporated into the usual Mariachi Cobre performance schedule. As of this publication, Mariachi Cobre's daily showtimes during all of March are listed as 11:30 a.m., 12:15 p.m., 1 p.m., 1:45 p.m., 2:30 p.m., 4:15 p.m. and 5 p.m. Mariachi Cobre usually performs on the shore of World Showcase Lagoon on the Promenade outside Mexico pavilion opposite to Donald Duck's meet and greet location.

Epcot Concerts News & Calendar

Also expanded to seven days a week, beginning on March 6, the Garden Rocks Concert Series takes the stage three times nightly through June 3. With this week's announcement of Wang Chung, Peabo Bryson and Eddie Palmieri, all of the scheduled performers are now known. Other recent additions included Tony Orlando, Jon Anderson of YES, Ambrosia, Magic Giant and Dennis DeYoung, original member of STYX, Steve Auger (Journey former lead vocalist), Air Supply, Rick Springfield, Richard Marx and Starship, starring Mickey Thomas. Returning performers also include The Spinners and Herman's Hermits starring Peter Noone, and new to the Festival performers include TobyMac, Steven Curtis Chapman, Sister Sledge, and Colin Hay of Men at Work. Herman's Hermits starring Peter Noone has performed many times at the America Gardens Theatre and is scheduled to return again this spring for the Garden Rocks Concert Series. File Photo by Alan S. Dalinka.

This summer, Guardians of the Galaxy-Awesome Mix Live! will return from June 14 through August 18. Star-Lord and Gamora (along with an "alien" band) will take a "musical journey" that showcases hits from Star-Lord's Awesome Mix tapes with multiple performances daily.

With Groot remotely patching "Awesome Mix" music into the headphones of of an alien band, Star-Lord tried to teach them how to become the "Galaxy's greatest cover band" during last summer's edition of the Guardians of the Galaxy-Awesome Mix Live! Concerts. Gamora seemed unimpressed. File Photo by Alan S. Dalinka.

For the convenience of our readers, all of the scheduled Disney on Broadway Concert Series performances at America Gardens Theatre are shown in our Google Calendar of Epcot Events. All of the scheduled performers for the Garden Rocks Concert Series also been added to the calendar, and the Guardians of the Galaxy-Awesome Mix Live! dates are included as well. While our Google Calendar of Epcot Events includes a list of the scheduled performers, it is always best to check the My Disney Experience app, Times Guide, and, yes, sometimes even signs posted at the park entrances and at the theater noting last minute changes. You can add the whole Event calendar to any calendar that supports the iCal format (like iPhone and Mac) by copying this link and, indeed, if when we get additional information and update the calendar, the calendar will update on your subscribed device as well. The calendar is provided as a courtesy "as is, where is" without any guarantees. Given the effort it took to create it and keep it updated, we do respectfully request that you do not post our entire calendar on another site without first asking our permission. Walt Disney World Resort does provide schedules in the My Disney Experience app, but does not allow you to add dates to calendars outside the app itself.

While Raglan Road's brunch, lunch, dinner and bar menus will be available, including its new Guinness-infused Bangin' Bangers and Mighty Mash, Raglan Road does not serve green beer because it says its an American invention. Raglan Road also asks that you not call the holiday "St. Patty's" – it's either "St. Patrick's Day" or "St. Paddy's" – and to remember that a shamrock has three leaves not four!

The restaurant shared its recipe with us and it is posted here on MousePad.

You can dine on Valentine's Day under the "sky-high chandeliers" in Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto's first Pan-Asian restaurant. For reservations visit MorimotoAsiaFLA.com.

Status of Parking Availability at Disney Springs NEW photo (first)

Those who visit Disney Springs during the weekends or during busy times of the year at the Resort know that the two parking structures often fill to capacity during those peak times. Even the flat lot on the West Side can fill up during very busy times! Construction continues across Buena Vista Drive at the site of the new garage that will connect to Disney Springs by a series of pedestrian bridges. We have not yet heard when the new structure will be open, but the trend of the name discussion for it has shifted from "Lemon" to "Grapefruit," and you can keep an eye on the overhead signs along Buena Vista Drive directing cars to the garages and lots with availability.

Although it increasingly looks closer to completed, construction continues at the new garage along Buena Vista Drive next to the Speedway gas station. Photo by Alan S. Dalinka.

At the existing garages, there is still on-going work underway to upgrade the electronic system that indicates parking space availability. File Photo by Alan S. Dalinka.

Current Discounts and Promotions

Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Walt Disney World Resort Update. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the intended audience. Check out the category that best matches you, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers.

Walt Disney World Resort theme park tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Florida or eligible for U.S. Military Personnel benefits. It is increasingly true that non-Florida residents tend to benefit the most by purchasing tickets in advance (and, of course, being mindful of the rules relevant to those tickets). As prices go up, it becomes even more important to pay heed: Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside Disney property stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Walt Disney World Theme Park admissions, and may result in denial of entry. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or a travel agency like MousePlanet travel partner Get Away Today.

I forgot what it is called, but it had something to do with a special deal at Christmas time with hotel and some special events thrown in. Does WDW still do something like that?
