Writer's note: The biggest event of Walt Disney World Resort's "Incredible Summer" is coming up this week: the opening of Toy Story Land. Cast member previews have been underway for more than a week, and some "Dress Rehearsals" including friends and family have now begun too. I was fortunate enough to be invited by a friend to one of them, but all previews, so far, have prohibited photographs, video, and the like.

The media-invited events begin on Thursday, so I expect to be able to start bringing you photos and video then. The dedication of the new land will take place on Friday morning at 10:55 Eastern Daylight Time, and Disney Parks Blog will stream that live (I will be there too, but will leave the live streaming to the preferred camera positions Disney Parks Blog, no doubt, will enjoy). The land opens to the public on Saturday, June 30.

This week, Toy Story Land began hosting "Magic Backstage Dress Rehearsal" for invited cast members, family, and friends. Toy Story Mania's Pixar Place entrance remained open during the "Dress Rehearsal" I attended. Photo by Alan S. Dalinka.

Now is the time to send me your questions in the comments or by e-mail, so I can pose them to the creative representatives and park executives on hand during the media events. I will review a number of the facts we already know about the new land below in the News. And, of course, though our friends at Touring Plans have their Crowd Forecast Resort-wide at only a 5/10 for this Saturday, I expect that the area in and around Disney's Hollywood Studios may feel more like a This is Spinal Tap kind of 11. It may not be as big of a happening as last year's opening of Pandora-The World of Avatar, or the even bigger-to-come crowds that likely will gather when Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge debuts late next year, but Toy Story Land is going to draw more people to the park to see what's new (and, indeed, cute and fun for adults, and, at long last at this park, rides for the whole family to enjoy together).

Disney H2O Glow Nights Underway at Disney's Typhoon Lagoon

Disney H2O Glow Nights debuted Thursday, June 21, at Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon water park, and we were invited to have a look. For guests looking to cool off during the usually hot Central Florida Thursday and Saturday nights this summer (through August 11), the new hard ticket event provides a special opportunity to enjoy the nearly 30-year-old water park with shorter wait times and a few party extras.

Disney's Typhoon Lagoon will soon celebrate its 30th Anniversary. It is usually only open to guests during daytime hours. Photo by Alan S. Dalinka.

Disney H2O Glow Nights (on Thursdays and Saturdays through August 11) provide guests an opportunity to visit the park from 8 p.m. until 11 p.m. Photo by Alan S. Dalinka.

The event also gives guests the opportunity to enjoy a new nighttime pool party hosted by a DJ playing popular songs next to Partysaurus Rex, sample unique food and beverage offerings available only at Disney H2O Glow Nights, and meet Toy Story's Woody, Jessie, and Buzz. Disney H2O Glow Nights also features The Wharf, an adults-only area with a private bar and live entertainment.

Special party food and beverages include Typhoon Lagoon's take on the Impossible Burger (the plant-based patty we have previously enjoyed at Disney's Animal Kingdom, Galactic Nights at Disney's Hollywood Studios, and The Edison), Verlasso Salmon, Vivoli il Gelato (from Disney Springs), and adult and non-alcoholic light-up frozen beverages. A large selection of "Toy Story"-themed merchandise is for sale at the park. The glow sticks (shown front left) are marked with Typhoon Lagoon graphics. Photo by Alan S. Dalinka.

Event tickets are $55/person over age 9 ($50/child ages 3-9) plus tax, and discounts are available for Disney Vacation Club Members, Annual Passholders, and Cast Members. For those considering making a single visit to a water park during their stay this summer, an event night is an opportunity to visit the park at night, with low attendance, and at a discount over the regular 1-Day water park tickets (which, during summer, are $65/person over age 9; $59/child ages 3-9).

As a hard ticket event, the park is much less crowded during Disney H2O Glow Nights, and on opening night, there was little or no wait for any attractions. Photo by Alan S. Dalinka.

Disney PhotoPass Photographers will be on hand during Disney H20 Glow Nights. PhotoPass has announced that its photographers will be on hand at Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach regularly through September 3. Photos taken by PhotoPass photographers are available for download to qualified Annual Passholders and anyone who purchases one of the Memory Maker products.

Terralina Crafted Italian Opens Thursday, June 28, at Disney Springs

When we saw the sign installed in recent weeks we knew it probably would not be long before we learned an opening date for the long-awaited reimagining and replacement for Portobello Country Italian Trattoria at Disney Springs. Yesterday, we learned that Terralina Crafted Italian will open to the public this Thursday, June 28.

With both indoor and al fresco dining, Terralina Crafted Italian will offer a new menu curated by James Beard-award-winning chef, Tony Mantuano and Orlando native, Chef Justin Plank. The latest Levy Restaurants concept is inspired by the design and lifestyle of Northern Italy's famous lakes like Lake Como, set far away from city life and surrounded by picturesque villages. "We are excited to bring an authentic Italian dining experience to Disney Springs and we look forward to sharing a piece of the Italian culture to vacationers and Florida locals," said Andy Lansing, President and CEO of Levy Restaurants. "Terralina Crafted Italian is a classic example of our commitment at Levy Restaurants to deliver authentic food, genuine hospitality, but most importantly a memorable guest experience."

A newly installed veranda overlooks the Riverboat Square area near neighboring Paddlefish restaurant. In addition to al fresco dining, the new veranda will also feature a full-service bar where guests can order handcrafted apertivos like the classic Negroni, share a refreshing pitcher of Crafted Lemonade made with lavender rosemary vodka, homemade orange blossom lemonade and celery bitters or select a bottle or glass of wine from a global and Italian wine list.

Terralina Crafted Italian will be open for lunch and dinner and also available for group dining and events, including interactive cooking classes. For further information visit the restaurant's website.

Watch For #ToyStoryLand Coverage June 28-29 (Land Opens June 30)

As we have noted above (and for quite some time), Toy Story Land opens to the public this Saturday, June 30. Imagined as a place where guests are shrunk down to the size of toys, the action takes place in Andy's backyard where he has set up his toys around his Mega-Coaster set (the Slinky Dog Dash Coaster), and around the play set he won at Pizza Planet (the Alien Swirling Saucers).

Walt Disney Presents includes a model of Toy Story Land right next door to the soon-to-be-permanent entrance to the new land. Photo by Alan S. Dalinka.

Toy Story Land now appears in detail on the My Disney Experience app (even including Andy's footprints). Screen shot by Alan S. Dalinka (Underlying content by Disney).

Along with a new entrance inside the land for the existing Toy Story Mania attraction, the land will provide this park an 11-acre expansion including attractions that can be enjoyed by the whole family together. Toy Story Mania has no minimum height requirement, while Alien Swirling Saucers has a 32-inch height minimum, and Slinky Dog Dash Coaster has a 38-inch height minimum. The saucers each seat two or three guests with a single seatbelt. Slinky Dog Dash Coaster cars seat two guests with individual lap bars (which are far more comfortable than those on Seven Dwarfs Mine Train over at Magic Kingdom, which also has a 38-inch height minimum).

The current Pixar Place entrance to Toy Story Mania! will soon be closed and this area will connect to an exit back into Toy Story Land. Photo by Alan S. Dalinka.

Guardians of the Galaxy-Awesome Mix Live! concert series runs daily through August 19 (with published showtimes at 1:30 p.m., 2:30 p.m., 5:30 p.m., 6:45 p.m., and 8 p.m.) at the America Gardens Theatre in World Showcase. The Epcot International Food & Wine Festival's Eat to the Beat concert series starts August 30 and runs through November 12. Guests can book Eat to the Beat dining packages, as well as other Food and Wine Festival events like Party for the Senses, seminars, and more by visiting TasteEpcot.com or calling (407) 939-3378 for reservations and information.

The Festival of the Holidays returns to Epcot on November 18, and its Candlelight Processional begins its seasonal run this year on Thanksgiving Day itself, November 22. Narrators for the three-times-nightly retelling of the traditional Christmas story accompanied by a massed choir and live orchestra have not yet been announced, and dining package information is not yet available.

The Candlelight Processional will debut at Epcot this year on Thanksgiving Day, November 22, and is scheduled to run three times nightly through December 30. File Photo by Alan S. Dalinka.

For the convenience of our readers, we list all of the scheduled acts in our Google Calendar of Epcot Events. You can also add it or any events on it to any calendar that supports the iCal format (like iPhone and Mac) by copying this link. When the Candlelight Processional celebrity narrators are announced, we will add the events to our calendar as well.

The calendar is provided as a courtesy "as is, where is" without any guarantees. Given the effort it took to create it, we do respectfully request that you do not post our entire calendar on another site without first asking our permission. Walt Disney World Resort does provide schedules in the My Disney Experience app, but does not allow you to add dates to calendars outside the app itself.

Views Around the World

All four theme parks are represented this week (though Epcot is viewed only from the parking lot of Disney's Hollywood Studios and from Expedition Everest at Disney's Animal Kingdom). As always, the captions tell the story and include bits of news along the way.

Magic Kingdom

Now that Disney-Pixar's "Incredibles 2" is playing in theaters, if you have seen the film, you may recognize some of these "Supers" saluted in banners in Tomorrowland. Photo by Alan S. Dalinka.

At long last, the Tomorrowland Rockettower Plaza stage has a shade structure. It is the Incredible Tomorrowland Expo home of Jack-Jack Diaper Dash at noon, and Super Party Time from 2 p.m. until 7 p.m. daily through September 3. Photo by Alan S. Dalinka.

Riders aboard the Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover can catch a quick (sorry about the blur) glance at the (likely temporary) ramp installed outside Space Mountain to route guests back to Tomorrowland from the current exit of Space Mountain. Photo by Alan S. Dalinka.

Refurbishment continues at Prince Charming Regal Carrousel, which usually continues to operate despite the scrim. Photo by Alan S. Dalinka.

Some of the show-lighting of the "its a small world" finale has been replaced with white LED bulbs that contrast with some of the other lighting in the scene. Photo by Alan S. Dalinka.

Speaking of lighting, some of the ghosts inhabiting the Haunted Mansion's ballroom scene now seem brighter than others. Photo by Alan S. Dalinka.

Construction continues in Adventureland at what is widely believed to be the future site of a members-only club similar to Disneyland's Club 33. Photo by Alan S. Dalinka.

And, finally, after the California Grill atop Disney's Contemporary Resort clears out a bit after the nightly showing of Magic Kingdom's Happily Ever After, it is still a fun place to relax with friends and catch a look at the fireworks finale of Once Upon A Time. Photo by Alan S. Dalinka.

Disney's Hollywood Studios

Some new directional signs are in place. It would not be surprising if these new signs are further updated when Toy Story Land opens. Photo by Alan S. Dalinka.

The area surrounded by shrub walls last week has reopened with newly installed pavement in place. Photo by Alan S. Dalinka.

The long-running (park year one) Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular filled to capacity yesterday for a mid-afternoon showing. I had not seen the "filled to capacity" sign before, but the area has been quite busy while the park's construction of the new lands has diminished ride and show capacity elsewhere in the park. Photo by Alan S. Dalinka.

Refurbishment continues at the Sunset Ranch Market tower sign, but the area appears to be operating normally. Photo by Alan S. Dalinka.

Hopefully, Fantasmic! will receive some attention once Toy Story Land gets fully operating. Since seeing Disneyland's update last July, the show's age is showing and, at least today, even its fairly new digital sign was not operating properly. Photo by Alan S. Dalinka.

From the park's parking lot, looking past one of the Disney Skyliner Towers toward Buena Vista Drive (and the Speedway Gas station across the street), you can see the steel frame of the future "Ratatouille"-themed attraction under construction between the France and Morocco pavilions at Epcot. Disney's Animal Kingdom

Nearly a month into the Incredible Summer, it is time for another look around the largely permanent Donald's Dino Bash. Photo by Alan S. Dalinka.

Remember, the story told here is that Donald Duck discovered that dinosaurs are his evolutionary ancestors, so he threw a party. Photo by Alan S. Dalinka.

Remember, when lightning is detected "in the area" (and not necessarily in the park itself), outdoor food and beverage carts and merchandise kiosks will close, as will many outdoor attractions. Photo by Alan S. Dalinka.

Disney Springs

Road Construction

The latest road construction project we noticed in recent weeks around the Resort is just off World Drive through the area between the solar array shaped like Mickey Mouse's head and the smaller one near the ramp to the Epcot parking toll plaza. Photo by Alan S. Dalinka.

This and That

…If you are planning to visit Walt Disney World Resort to celebrate America's Independence Day, three parks have fireworks options and some special entertainment:

  • Magic Kingdom – July 3 and 4 – rather than the usual presentation of the Happily Every After show, at 9:15 p.m. each night, the park will present Disney's Celebrate America! A Fourth of July Concert in the Sky. Since the announcement says there will be rockets "all around" the park, we assume there will be perimeter fireworks (which may be more limited than in previous years due to construction of the TRON-themed rollercoaster in Tomorrowland). In past years, this special two-night showing has also included a "mirror" fireworks launch site on the Seven Seas Lagoon itself, and, we expect it will again this year, but have not seen a specific announcement. There will also be DJ-hosted parties in Frontierland and Tomorrowland during both evenings.
  • Epcot – July 4 – after the usual 9 p.m. showing of Illuminations: Reflections of Earth, there will be a special "all-American grand finale" (which you may hear folks refer to as a "tag" after the show). At 5:30 p.m., 6:45 p.m., and 8 p.m., there will be special evening concerts at America Gardens Theatre by Voices of Liberty. During the day, Mickey and his friends will appear in patriotic attire outside The American Adventure.
  • Disney's Hollywood Studios – July 4 – the park will present the current version of its Star Wars: A Galactic Spectacular show at 10 p.m. which, as Disney says, gives you the opportunity to celebrate "one of the greatest icons of American popular culture."

Disney Parks Blog shared the inspiring story this week of Sierrah Lemons, a 17-year-old that lost an eye to cancer as a toddler, who is participating in the AAU National Volleyball Championships at the Resort.

Disney Parks Blog also provided details of a limited time deal for guests planning to visit during the week of Labor Day, September 3, and departing on September 8. The package includes a five-night stay at a select Disney Resort, four-day Magic Your Way tickets, plus a special "welcome dinner party inspired by" the Epcot International Food & Wine Festival, a nighttime Kilimanjaro Safaris Adventure, exclusive Rivers of Light viewing, two hours of exclusive evening access at Toy Story Land, and Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party at Magic Kingdom. The deal must be booked by August 19. It took a bit of searching, but the full details are on this page of DisneyWorld.com or you can call (407)939-5268 and ask about the "Ultimate Disney Fall into Magic Package."

…Speaking of Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party, Disney Parks Blog also announced that, this year, Mad Tea Party will have special lighting and effects, Space Mountain will feature a new soundtrack and special effects, Pirates of the Caribbean will include new pirates "interacting with sailing guests" searching for "Gunpowder Pete," and there will be a Storybook Circus Disney Junior Jam dance party featuring Disney Junior Characters including Doc McStuffins.

…In case you skipped it in the news above, Disney PhotoPass photographers will be on hand all summer at Disney's Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach water parks through September 3. As always, photos will be available to qualified Annual Passholders and those who purchase Memory Maker.

…Just one last reminder that through Friday, June 29, Passholders looking to get their summer-themed Donald Duck complimentary gift magnet will now find them at Mouse Gear in Future World at Epcot. Be sure to have a valid photo ID matching your Annual Pass.

…The MousePlanet Newsletter is here! The newsletter contains a recap of the week's articles (in case you miss a day), news that may have developed since the weekly Updates were published, and tips about what's happening at the Disney theme parks for the coming weekend. We'll also include a fun bonus, such as an Eye Spy or a trivia question. To subscribe to our free newsletter, just enter your email in the box below.

Current Discounts & Promotions

Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Walt Disney World Resort Update. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the intended audience. Check out the category that best matches you, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers.

Walt Disney World Resort theme park tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Florida or eligible for U.S. Military Personnel benefits. It is increasingly true that non-Florida residents tend to benefit the most by purchasing tickets in advance (and, of course, being mindful of the rules relevant to those tickets). As prices go up, it becomes even more important to pay heed: Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside Disney property stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Walt Disney World Theme Park admissions, and may result in denial of entry. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or a travel agency like MousePlanet travel partner Get Away Today.

Gold, Platinum, Platinum Plus, and Premier Passholders should be "on the lookout for an event invitation with registration details in email" for "exclusive" access to Toy Story Land at specific times on select dates in September. Eligible passholders that want to attend will need to follow the email instructions to register for an event date and time in advance and, if they would like to register a guest, that guest also must have a Gold, Platinum, Platinum Plus, or Premier annual pass and be listed on the Friends & Family list sharing "All My Plans" in My Disney Experience. Attending the event will require the valid pass and a matching photo ID, but there will be no additional charge.

LAST CHANCE: While Silver and Weekday Select Passholders are left out of the June "Bring-a-Friend" and September Exclusive Toy Story Land access perks, they do get an unexpected perk in June too: blockouts have been lifted through this Friday, June 29. So, after last week's brief blockout, Silver and Weekday Select Passholders can park hop for nearly three weeks longer than previously announced (of course, the Weekday Select passes remain blocked on weekends).

For all Passholders interested in early access to the latest Toy Story Land-themed MagicBands, visit Mickey's of Hollywood, Celebrity 5 & 10, Keystone Clothiers, Once Upon a Time, and Walt Disney Presents, where you can now purchase them by showing your pass and matching photo ID (quantity limits apply, but, so does your 20% discount).

LAST CHANCE: Likewise, all Passholders can now get a "double dining discount" (20% instead of 10% off) at Hollywood & Vine through Friday, June 29. Discount is valid for the Passholder and up to three additional guests off the regular price of food and non-alcoholic beverages (excluding tax and gratuity, and does not apply during special events).

For the most up-to-date list of locations offering dining discounts to Annual Passholders, visit this page of DisneyWorld.com.

Alan, when did you decide that you were going to devote your life to helping WDW geeks live vicariously through you? When did it come to you that you were going to take it for the team and let us know what is going on at the Happiest Place on Earth.
Great report as usual. Thanks again. Have fun at the Toy Story deal.

Thanks. The exact moment was when I was the “fill-in” WDW Update writer, and I was riding the PeopleMover with Adrienne and Tony, Adrienne said, “You are going to take over the WDW Updates, right?”
