Disneyland Forward takes another step

Disneyland Forward, a multi-year expansion proposal for the Disneyland Resort, reached a significant milestone last week when the city of Anaheim released a Draft Subsequent Environmental Impact Report for the project. The EIR is a massive 900-page document, plus a mind-numbing 15,000 pages of appendices, filled with analyses of sky exposure planes, vehicle miles traveled and criteria pollutants.

For all of the exhaustive detail in the document (the historical overview section literally begins in the year 500 BC), there's not a lot in there about what Disney actually plans to do. However, buried in an appendix were two exhibits which made for great—if misleading—headlines last week.

No, Disney didn't just announce the return of the beloved PeopleMover to Disneyland, or a new Gondola system for the Resort. However, the proposal does call for the construction of up to two more bridges over Disneyland Drive, just as the current bridge connects Downtown Disney to the hotels. The proposal allows that these could be new pedestrian bridges like the current bridge, or perhaps themed ride crossings. The existing Monorail beam over Disneyland Drive could already be considered a ride crossing, and it should be noted that potential expansion of the Monorail is also mentioned elsewhere in the plan.

This doesn't mean Disney is going to do any of this; it's just an example of what they could do. And honestly, that's been the entire theme of Disneyland Forward—lots of potential, very few details.

Disney first announced the Disneyland Forward initiative in March 2021, weeks before the resort reopened from the 14-month pandemic closure. The company said it wanted the City of Anaheim to revisit the 1993 Disneyland Resort Specific Plan, which set up land use "districts," with specific rules governing each.

This map from the Disneyland Resort Specific Project shows how the property was divided up into five specific use areas. Photo courtesy City of Anaheim.

Disney says it has filled all of the space in the district earmarked as theme park, and has no place to expand without taking out existing park space, as was the case when Big Thunder Ranch was razed to make room for Star Wars Galaxy's Edge. Plans to build a new resort hotel were stymied in 2018, in part because the site proposed for the project was deemed to be part of the parking district. The company wants updates that would permit integrated development of new theme park, hotel, shopping and entertainment venues on land Disney already owns.

Over the past 18 months, Disney has held a series of Community Coffee events to review the expansion plan with Anaheim residents and interested locals. During that time, Resort President Ken Potrock has made the rounds with local business and community leaders, and the city of Anaheim has solicited feedback from property owners and residents. The concept art released to date is bright, colorful and vague. Disney really isn't getting into what they want to build—they just want the rights to do it.

Throughout the process, Disney officials have emphasized that they aren't seeking tax concessions or public funding for any future expansion, and that these approvals would not increase the acerage Disney already owns.

With the release of the draft Environmental Impact Report, the project now enters a public comment period. Disney says hearings with the city council will take place in 2024.

A few more interesting things to note from the draft EIR:

  • This expansion is slated to be complete by 2040, well before Disneyland's 100th anniversary.
  • The Main Street Railroad Depot, the Pirate of the Caribbean attraction and the Hungry Bear Restaurant are all listed in the National Register of Historic Places (for those wondering why Disney didn't covert Hungry Bear instead of French Market to create Tiana's Palace, this may be your answer).
  • All of Disneyland is under consideration for designation as the Disneyland Theme Park Historic District under the California Environmental Quality Act.
  • The plan also allows for the construction of a pedestrian bridge over Katella Blvd, potentially connecting the Disneyland Resort to the Anaheim Convention Center campus.
  • Up to three pedestrian bridges can be constructed over Harbor Blvd, though Disney has to maintain at least one street-level crossing.

Avenger's Vault opens

Disney theme parks are famous for rides with an "exit through the gift shop" layout, but this week Disney California Adventure debuted a gift shop months, or even years, before the accompanying ride.

The new Avengers Vault is located inside a very large show building at the back of the six-acre Avengers Campus. The building is adorned with a model Quinjet, and is used mostly as a stage for various stunt shows featuring the Avengers characters.

Disney eventually plans to open a ride inside the show building, but for now there's a gift shop. Merchandise highlights include the Infinity Saga Relics collection released elsewhere in 2022, and Avengers-themed merchandise already available at other Disneyland Resort shops.

Just last week Disney shared a first look at the ride vehicle for the yet-to-be-named attraction. The ride vehicle is said to combine technology from Stark Industries and Wakanda, and will allow the recruits to travel wherever and whenever they are needed across the multiverse to help The Avengers defeat King Thanos and his band of baddies.

No other details were offered, and we don't know when the attraction is slated to debut.

You can now listen all daaaayyyyy

If you didn't get a chance to see Rogers: The Musical during its limited-time run at Disney California Adventure, or if you loved the show and want to keep listening all day, Walt Disney Records has just released Rogers: The Musical Original Cast Recording.

Rogers: The Musical features Steve Rogers, Peggy Carter and a singing Nick Fury in an extremely compressed telling of Rogers' rise from zero to superhero. The digital album features 12 songs from the one-act show, including "Save the City," which first appeared in the Disney+ series Hawkeye, and five new original songs written just for the stage production.

"Rogers: The Musical" is now playing at Disney California Adventure. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.

Among the original songs is "What You Missed," a patter song led by Nick Fury, and the heartfelt "End of the Line," a duet between Steve Rogers present and future.

Rogers: The Musical Original Cast Recording is now streaming on Spotify, Apple Music, Pandora, Amazon Music, and YouTube Music.

Casting notices

Disney is looking for an unusual mix of performers for "upcoming special events and appearances at the Disneyland Resort," according to a series of notices posted to the Disney Auditions website.

Characters from Turning Red may appear at the Disneyland Resort in coming months. MousePlanet file photo.

Nine of the roles are characters from the Disney-Pixar film Turning Red. Disney is seeking performers to portray Jin Lee, the father of Meilin from the movie; Miriam, Priya and Abby, Meilin's three best friends; and all five members of the fictional boy band 4*TOWN. Disney says movement ability is a plus, but all roles will be cast based on resemblance to the character.

The casting notice gives no indication of what special event or appearance these performers may be needed for, but requires the performers to be available at least three days per week. We also note there is not a specific casting call for Meilin or her mother Ming, so we assume one or both will appear only in their red panda form. Red Panda Mei appeared in a meet-and-greet at Shanghai Disneyland this past spring, but this would be the first appearance in the domestic theme parks.

In a possibly related notice, Disney is seeking in-line skaters for a "unique, new experience coming to the Disneyland Resort." It's possible this is just an audition for snowflake skaters for A Christmas Fantasy Parade, but perhaps not? Again, performers are needed to be fully available at least three days a week. Disney also posted a video showing the exact skills skaters need to demonstrate in their audition tape.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

Current Discounts and Promotions

Disneyland prices as of October 11, 2022.

Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.

Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency like MousePlanet travel partner Get Away Today.

SoCal Resident Ticket Offer

The California Resident Ticket is a 3-day, 1-park-per-day ticket that offers residents of California admission to either Disneyland or Disney California Adventure:

  • The weekday ticket – starting at $249, three weekdays (Mondays through Thursdays only) between June 12 and September 28, 2023
  • The any day ticket – starting at $299, three days (any day of the week, including weekends) between June 12 and September 28, 2023

You can use every day of the California resident ticket at the same theme park, or visit different parks on different days, but you can't use it to enter both parks on the same day.

The weekday ticket is $249 for ages 3 and up, is valid only Mondays through Thursday, and doesn't include weekends. The any day ticket costs $45 more, starts at $299 for ages 3 and up, but adds Friday, Saturday, and Sunday to your list of days.

For an additional $60, you can also upgrade the ticket to a park-hopper, which allows entry to both parks each day.

You can also add the paid Disney Genie+ service to your California resident ticket. Although you can upgrade all three days in advance for $20 per day (for a total of $60 for the three days), our recommendation is to pay for the service on the first day, after you enter the theme park. This will let you make sure the service provides a value for you, to decide whether you want to spend the extra money for your remaining days.

Tickets are available through the Disneyland website, or through MousePlanet travel partner Get Away Today.

There is no "fuse" on this ticket, which means that you can use the first admission on June 12 and wait until September 28 to use the remaining admission. However, remember that you must make a theme park reservation for each day that you want to use the ticket. Disney also warns that ticket sales may be paused or ended at any time, so it's probably best to purchase early so you're ready to make reservations as soon as they open for your desired travel dates.

Tickets expire on September 28, 2023, and have no holiday blackouts. That means that you can visit on the 4th of July holiday using a weekday ticket, assuming reservations are available.

Disney states that proof of residency is required for purchase and admission, and each resident can purchase up to five tickets per day.

Four Day Tickets
  • Four-Day, One-Park per Day Ticket – regularly $395/$370
  • Four-Day Park Hopper – regularly $455/$430
  • Disney Genie+ Add-On – $25 per day, per ticket
  • Advance purchase Four-Day tickets – check for current discounts and promotions from Get Away Today.
Five Day Tickets
  • Five-Day, One-Park per Day Ticket – Regularly $415/$390
  • Five-Day Park Hopper – Regularly $475/$450
  • Disney Genie+ Add-On – $25 per day, per ticket
  • Advance purchase Five-Day tickets – check for current discounts and promotions from Get Away Today.
Six Day (or more) Tickets

Some travel providers may offer tickets for 6 days or longer as part of a package to international customers; residents of Canada, Australia/New Zealand, or the U.K. should check with local travel agencies to see what options may be available.

I'm in line with your assessment that right now all of the push on Disneyland Forward is just possibilities - but they've done their job in generating click bait and story leads for vloggers to push the agenda of what will go in. Im always amused when something that does finally come in thats not as depicted and you either get "hmm, why did that happen" or "oh yeah, just like I predicted" because, as we know, who has the time to go through all the videos and discover the moment they predicted something.

It sure seems inevitable to me that this will get approval. The sound data didnt seem too bad. What I dont trust right now is the parking AND walking requirements. Making resorts and parks so big requires so much effort to get around. I think a third park instead would not only make sense logically but also monetarily since they could charge a completely third gate ticket price instead of a price increase on existing tickets.

    All possibilities...

EDIT - thanks for the note on historical designation. Never knew that.

This made me curious too. I looked up the Hungry Bear in my Disneyland Encyclopedia, and it seems that restaurant opened in 1972 to go with Bear Country and the Country Bear Jamboree when it debuted.

So can anyone explain why that restaurant is specifically on the Historical list?

I've eaten there at least once or twice and I think it's great with the 2 levels and how you get to watch over the ROA while eating there, but what specifically landed it on the Historic Places list?

I could see if it was something with direct connection to Walt, etc, but that seems unlikely since he had already passed away quite a few years before it opened.(unless maybe he had considered and shared the idea with others over the years and then it was only brought to reality after his death?)

    Just curious.
